Okay, I realize I am the last person on the planet who is not signed up for Twitter. What exactly does it do? Am I missing out on the greatest invention of our time, LOL?? Why should I Twitter?

Personally, I don't like Twitter. I signed up for it a while back to "follow" a couple of bands I like - they send updates about upcoming shows, etc. But that's all I do with it. I've never posted an update (aka "tweeted") in my life, and don't plan to. I have about 20 people "following" me and I would like to tell them not to bother, lol. I can understand it's usefulness for performers to promote themselves, or for companies to send out information to customers, but I don't see the point for an average person. I do not need to be alerted via text message that my friend is at Starbucks drinking a latte. I just don't get the point of the whole thing.

Well you are definitely not the only person who doesn't twitter, I don't and I have no plans to start. :)

I don't have a Twitter account either. I'm on Facebook, so it seems kind of redundant. I just don't see the need for it.

And both Facebook and Twitter are blocked at my office, so I couldn't waste time there (like I do here on The DIS!)

I don't either and no plans to start. I know a lot of people that do, but I get way too many e-mails and phone calls at work a day to want to communicate to anyone during my downtime.

To me its a personal preference. I know when I first signed up I did so purely to keep up with others, but posted little myself. You can Twitter on your home computer, your phone or with both. You can set things up so that you can just read at your leisure or you can get notifications everytime someone updates with a post. I get notifications for some of my Twitter subscriptions on my Iphone and others I leave to read on the web when I feel the need. You can protect your updates so only people you approve can see what you Twitter or you can leave your posts for the whole world to see. Sometimes I find it fun and other times I think its a nuisance. Its nice to get updates on things that interest you or keep up with friends that aren't close by or in my case, kids at college. The only time I don't like it is when some friends get bored and they start giving you a play by play of their day and sometimes at all hours of the day and night (I do wonder when some of these folks sleep, but that is another matter). I like some of the Disney related twitters, but it can be rather redundant if you subscribe to a bunch of them. I'd say try it and then if its not something you enjoy then just close the account.

I'm also another person that doesn't twitter. I have a facebook account, but I really only visit it about once a month, if I remember at all. People post the most mundane activities that they are doing. I just don't get it. I also don't text either. Dh and ds do, just not me. I once attempted to text my ds and ended up texting my dh instead. Oh well. I rather prefer to talk to someone instead of texting anyways.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I'm not "old" (at least I don't feel it):lmao:, and I teach high school so I'm surrounded by the tech generation. But I have no desire to twitter, text or facebook. Many of my adult friends like Facebook and I'm starting to feel pressure to get an account, but I worry about the permanence of the internet and the access people have to me.
For those of you that have Facebook, anyone convince? I tend to agree with a PP who said that downtime is for NOT communicating. I'd rather be sitting alone by a mountain lake than finding out who Miley Cyrus' new boyfriend is... :thumbsup2
Still, if it's really that great....

i dont get twitter either....

dont get me wrong, i LOVE my facebook, but i totally think the facebook status box is the same thing as twitter. i have a couple of friends who twitter, but thats about it.

I signed up for Twitter to follow the Disney Christmas Carol Train Tour after I read about the long waits at the first stop in LA. Not only did I get information about the waits other were actually experiencing (hint: go in the mroning), but I found out that the location of the stop in our area had changed almost a week before it was posted on the official Disney site. Now I mostly follow updates on D23 and travel deals. Still yet to actually tweet myself. -- Suzanne

I like twitter for following local businesses and companies I use in my business. I've got a handful of free samples, tons of discounts, and even won a couple of contests. :thumbsup2

As for updating myself, I have twitter set up to update my facebook, myspace, and blog for me when I update my twitter.

Since I can't justify the cost of internet while at WDW for the little amount I'd be using it, I'll be using twitter/twitpic to keep the grandparents updated on all the fun the kids are having. :goodvibes

OK, I've read all the responses and I still don't 'get' Twitter. Do people just keep an ongoing diary of their lives-celebs, friends, companys-and you get notices that they've made an entry? I don't Facebook or MySpace or anything other than surf the net either. I have friends who IM me or text me and that seems like enough. What does it mean to have people 'follow you around?' I see TV people say, keep up with us on Twitter but is it really that interesting? Does Oprah Twitter? Is it really Oprah? How do you know you are getting messages or info from the real people? I can see real opportunity for fraud, eh?

Whether its interesting is subjective and depends on who/what your following. I don't do Facebook or MySpace. Those seem to require too much of my time and energy, which is why I find Twitter more to my liking. I don't follow celebrities, so I can't comment on that one.

I saw an article from a reputable management agency in LA(can't remember the name), but they said most celeb twitters aren't the real thing, Maybe in some cases they have as assistant doing it for them, but mostly it is an imposter.

I do have a Facebook and a My Space acct, but I'm rarely on either one. They aren't blocked at work and I use My Space to check out many bands for work purposes, but I don't post on it while I'm at work, and honestly, I rarely post on either MS or FB while at home. Like others I prefer to spend my time off away from the computer.

I do have a Twitter acct but hardly ever post.

I have my own business and tend to follow business-related Twitterers. I also follow celebs. There are certain ones who will post pics from their every day lives, which is kind of cool (Ashton/Demi for example). I also keep up on Twilight/New Moon related things via Twitter.

I've gotten some really useful information.....interesting articles, up and coming stuff, etc.

People are also starting to post RECIPES on Twitter of all things. In 140 chars or less!

I was a long holdout from Facebook and finally joined b/c all of my "older' family members are on it and it is a great way to stay linked b/c otherwise you find things out last minute and it stinks.

I found my bestest friend from high school that I lost touch with and connected with folks from high school.

I have been advised on how to adjust security so only the people that I have ok'd can see a darn thing and who they are linked to can't.

I could care less about Miley Cyrus' new boyfriend but it is a blessing to see my old friends doing well all grown up with kids of their own.

Plus I moved so much as a kid as my parents were military and lost friends not of my own doing.

Facebook is a nice way to connect with people and you can disconnect them at anytime without giving your personal contact information away.

I'm a people person and want to reconnect with people that I've known (as long as I liked them when I knew them.).

I hesitated for a long while as I have two very specific individuals whom I do not want to find me at all. But they do not have that ability above asking me to be their friend at which point I would say NO!

I don't twitter.
