OT-Tip for ear piercing?

I didn't tip when we had DD's done.....I do want you to make sure that when you have it done make sure that they pierce them high enough in her ear.

The first time we got DD's done they were pierced too low and her earrings pulled through and split her lobe in half. It cost us a lot of money to have her lobe sewn back together and get the other ear repaired. She has had them pierced since then, but they are done correctly this time.

So please be careful!!!

**OH and it took DD 3 trips to the store before she finally would let them pierce them...:rotfl:

We have 4 dd's....pierced ears at 6 months old for 1st dd, 3 months old for 2nd dd, 8 weeks for 3rd dd and just 3 weeks old for 4th dd!!

Ou DR had no issue with our hygiene and knew that I always have it done at a very clean salon with sterile equipment and prepackaged earrings so gave me the go-ahead each time.

I tip. Especially for ear piercing! It is a service and I am very grateful that it went quickly, wasn't off-center and that they were kind to my kids and me and I would want to reward that service and encourage it, no? :confused3

We got DD's ears pierced at Libby Lu the first time around.

They tried to do the two guns at a time thing. One got stuck in DD's ear, ripped the skin, that ear ended up infected, and they were uneven on top of everything. We let those piercings close.
We did NOT tip!

.

Your poor DD! That could really traumatize a little girl.

We did my DD9 at Claire's and did not even think to tip until I saw this thread. I think you tend to tip people in the service industry since their wages are much lower and they rely mostly on tips but if you are in retail you get paid a base wage that is higher.

My dd had her ears pierced while she was having her tonsils out! The ENT was more than happy to do it. Give an ENT a call and ask if they do them in the office.( I used to work for one and they did them all the time)

I hope that you know that I was just kidding (see the wink and big smile smilies after my comments above.)
:flower3: But I really did not know what a tragus was and I DID google it before I posted. I had never heard that word before I had read it on your post. (And FireFox's spell check does underline tragus- so it doesn't know it either.)

You learn something new every day! ::yes::

No worries Beth, I wasn't offended. :) And I tend to forget where I've stated what the Tragus is....LOL And yes, it did hurt but not as much as I would imagine the tongue would hurt. Talk about ouch! LOL

I had my ears pierced just before I turned 16 at Walmart. We didn't tip. They turned out perfectly and I haven't had any problems in 11 years. She did one ear at a time. Many of my friends had their ears done by 2 people and all of them have uneven holes. If I had them done in a salon or in a piercing studio we would have tipped.

I'm about to get up on a soapbox for a bit, but this is a personal pet peeve of mine:

If your daughter wants her ears pierced, you should tip the person who does it. However, you should never go to a piercing place in the mall. For one, those guns can not be sterilized, so if the person before you has a disease that you do not want, you risk getting it as well. Additionally, people who pierce in the mall/hair salons/etc. are generally "trained" in about 2 days, with no knowledge of anatomy, blood borne pathogens, etc. Finally, earring are blunt. Shoving a blunt object (ex. stud earrings) through an earlobe will hurt much more that shoving a sharp object (ex. needle) through, and heal much more quickly.

Most piercing shops will pierce minor's earlobes provided that they are old enough to consent to the piercing themselves (as in, no forcing an infant to do it), and a parent is there to sign. I'm sure a pediatrician would be another option, but I have never gotten pierced by a doctor myself, so I do not know how that works. I would research shops in your area, make some phone calls, find someone you are comfortable with, and go from there. Good luck!

OK, I guess I should post a follow-up since we are done with the piercing. The place was like a cross between Cartoon Cuts and Libby Lu with a party room. The woman who did the piercing was experienced and did a good job. She did use a gun but DD barely flinched. She numbed her earlobes before she started. DD said it didn't really hurt. Then again she never cries when she gets shots - she's a tough cookie for a 9yo! They gave us the disinfecting solution and instructions for follow-up. I did tip her. I didn't feel comfortable not tipping because it was a salon-type environment. DD attended a b-day party there after her ears were done. DD is very happy and is good about keeping them clean so far!

Thanks for everyone's advice!
