Ongoing DVC Chat

I was just wondering, given the speed at which posts tend to receive reponses, whether anyone has considered using an ongoing live chat session to talk about DVC matters?

It seems that quite a few of us are online at any given moment and I for one would certainly appreciate the opportunity to keep a chat window open for quick live interaction.

I have started a room called DVCCHAT using iChat which should be accessible to anyone using AIM.

Ahh.. Now I get it. Sorry. You are right. It is Sunday only for DVC. On going would be kind of fun.

Probably not practical. With chat you're relying on your full audience being on-line for that single moment in time. If someone posts "What is a Use Year" on a message board, that post stays close to the surface for at least a couple of days, no doubt answering the question for many more than just the member who actually asked the question.

Without that history being accessible, you could have the same question asked and answered many, many times throughout the day.

Actually, you are mistaken. The DIS Chat room is open 24/7 and has extra rooms available for those wanting to discuss topics different from those in the main room. Those wanting to discuss DVC are welcome to meet any time they'd like.

DVC Chat begins at 9:00pm ET every Sunday night and lasts about an hour - or until everyone is gone, but the <a href="http://disboards.com/chat/index.php3">DIS chat room</a> is ready right now for anyone interested.

I think it is more the other way, actually. People with Apple iChat accounts through the .Mac service can chat with AIM users.

This is the iChat software released by Apple Computer and not the other service by the same name, which I have never tried but believe is browser-based (please correct me if I am wrong).

In Apple's iChat you can create a room which, I believe may be joined by AIM users. I was proposing DVCCHAT as a name. If it doesn't exist because no one is in it when someone new tries to join, they should be able to create the room again and be joined by subsequent users. This works if we all agree to the name and the join/create it as required.

Of course, I have never tried this and it could fail completely!

There are, I suppose, other persistent chat room options that are not browser-based if this doesn't work. That was actually my goal as I have multiple messaging clients up all day for work purposes and I would love something more fun to pop up on my screen.

While you are correct about the transient nature of live conversation, I do not agree that it is impractical or that it is inherently problematic for certain members of the community to miss out on certain conversations. I am not looking to replace this resource, which I find extremely valuable, but rather to supplement it with live conversation. This occurred to me while I was watching how quickly certain posts get responses and I realized how many people are online viewing this board at the same time.

I think that there is value in both synchronous and asynchronous communication. The fact that conversing with friends and family doesn't leave a historical record does not lead me to limit my communication to passing notes on paper.

I just think it would be a nice way to exchange greetings, ask a quick question, etc.

I stand corrected. That is good to know.

I would, of course, still much prefer using one of the numerous modern chat clients to chatting in a browser. As a general rule these clients are well integrated into our operating systems, can sit unobtrusively in the background, can run on things like PDAs & cell phones, and offer additional capabilities (camera, audio, etc.) should you want it.

It always seems (to me anyway) that you have to be actively involved in a browser-based chat while you can keep an eye on a client-based chat and participate as possible while you do the other things that make up your day.
