Um, Jim, are you aware Mom's temperature with the wind chill was -20°, possibly even colder? I mean, mine was that low last night, and she's further inland. Even with the best cranked way up, I'm sitting here in sweats and a Throwbee.
Yeah, my dd keeps me apprised of the weather situation in Clermont, as does my step-mom in Pompano Beach! I get it....40's are cold in Florida. But I gotta tell you....a wind chill of -23 is not fun!!!! It hurts to go outside and breathe!!! I was in Delray Beach and Pompano between Christmas and New Years. It was actually kind of funny listening to everyone complain about the chill!!!!

I saw a photo from Uniglo in DS.....the place was empty! Not a coat or jacket to be seen!!!! At least my dd has some warm clothes with her. I do feel badly for those that think Orlando doesn't get cold!!!!
SHEN is gorgeous! Make sure to book your lodging as early as possible. The accommodations are kind of rustic, but fine. We stayed in Skyland and loved it. Big Meadows is also very nice (lots of deer!). Here's a link to the NPS website: www.nps.gov/shen From there, if you click on lodging, it will re-direct you to the concessionaire's website where you can book lodging.
Off topic but could you recommend a hotel not inside the park (less rustic), we are unsure where to stay? Harrisonburg? Woodstock? Unclear where the best and easiest location would be for access to Skyline Drive and hikes but with restaurants around...something family friendly. Thanks!

I've never stayed anywhere but inside the park. However, Luray, Va is just west of the park (park HQ is at Luray), about in the middle, and a very easy drive to the park. Luray is also the site of Luray Caverns, which is worth seeing if you have time. I can't recommend a specific hotel, but there are several in Luray.
We have stayed in lodge rooms at Skyland inside the park. They were quite comfortable. There are also ranger programs for the kids, and a good restaurant at Skyland. It's roughly in the middle of Shenandoah. Here's a link to the lodging site: https://www.goshenandoah.com/lodging/skyland

Both Skyland and Big Meadows have a variety of rooms to choose from.
