We are doing a Royal Caribbean cruise out of Port Canaveral on a Sunday in April. We will be flying into orlando either Friday night or Saturday morning. Either way we will have Saturday free to do something. We have the option of renting a car at the airport and just staying at a hotel near the port. Or...we could take magical express to a disney resort and do magic kingdom saturday along with a nice dinner at ohanas (my fav). The problem is that there are 3 adults, one teen and a 6 year old. I don't want to spend a fortune for a room. We have stayed at POR in the past...but I did a quick search and it wasn't listed as an option for groups of 5. Im not opposed to a value resort but it looks like we would need a suite...and that brings the price way up.. The next dilemma is we will need to rent a car Sunday morning to drive to the port. How difficult is it to get from the resorts to the car care center? would we just be better off renting at the airport and staying in a DTD hotel thats non-disney?

You can stay at POR! If I were you, I would go to the Walt Disney World site and just plug your date and family configuration into the booking engine and see if it's available. I just tested it for you and 3 adults, plus a teen and 6 year old can definitely stay there.

Why not take ME to POR and then hire a car to take you to the port so you don't have to deal with the car rental? Or, if it's cheaper to rent the car at the airport, perhaps the DTD resort or Swan/Dolphin?

Thanks. I was thinking POR would be our best option if available. We like that resort so I'd be happy. We would love to take a shuttle/taxi to the pier but its significantly cheaper to rent a car and return it at a rental agency near pier.

You should definitely stay at Port Orleans Riverside. thats were my family stays and we have 5 people:flower3:

If you rent a car from Alamo or National, you can have them pick you up at any WDW resort and they will take you to the Customer Care Center at no charge. For one night, I'd also look into renting DVC points. DVC also includes the Magic Express. I'd stay at Kidani in a one bedroom, but I think POR (even with rented points) might be cheapest. If you are interested, you might consider one of the new AoA Suites. Maybe use this 1 night opportunity to stay somewhere you've always wanted to stay at. have fun planning.

I would suggest the Embassy suites near DTD. Its a great hotel, close to disney, and has room for 6.

How do I go about getting DVC points?

Check the Rent/Trade board in the DVC section of the DIS as a start. Make sure to read the stickies at the top.
