One Bedroom Villa Questions...

I'll probably get a lot of static for the following, but here goes!

Hypothetical question for you all: If you owned (not a timeshare) a one bedroom condo advertised as 'sleeps four' would you tell potential renter its OK to bring a fifth person, same price?

Non-hypothetical question: Are room occupancy limits rules or guidelines?

JR

JR,

No offense, but if I OWNED BCV (aaahhh...I can only dream), there would be a lot of things that DVC does that I would not do. One of the aspects of buying into a timeshare is that we have to live by their rules...not ours. If I was renting a space that I owned, I certainly would allow people to get into their room earlier than 4:00 pm, for example.

The point is this...it is not my rules, but MS's rules....they are the management company DVC hired to administrate the running of our jointly owned timeshare. DVC MS is now telling everyone that they will allow 5 in a one bedroom but will not provide bedding for that 5th person. Like it or no...it is their policy. A renter does not have access to MS to ask that question, so I thought I would provide that information...just as I would provide any information that I know to someone interested on these boards.

I am not sure by your post, if you object to 5 being in a one bedroom, or if you just object to 5 being in a one bedroom if "renters" are in there. I certainly understand these feelings, but unless DVC adopts some policy that says, "5 will be allowed in a one bedroom as long as the owner is listed as one of the occupants" there is no way to stop this policy of 5 being allowed to be allowed for everyone.

I know a lot of people who rent out their points may not want renters to get this information because the owners could then get the renters to rent a 2 bedroom instead of a 1 bedroom. But, I will not/cannot be party to someone lying to make more of a $$$ off of their ownership of DVC at the expense of others. They can lie if they want...but, I will not corroborate their stories.

I, personally am not happy with the idea of 5 in a one bedroom. When we go down with 5 people, we get a 2 bedroom....I just don't want my WDW DVC vacations to be anything less than magical (and, this includes NOT sharing a bathroom with 4 other people). But, alas....I am NOT the controjling shareholder of DVC and cannot do anything about it. I can't get into my room earlier than 4:00...I can't guarantee non-smoking, non-handicapped...I can't guarantee an Epcot view everytime...I can't make SAB stay open later....and, I cannot change the policies regarding how many people MS lets register in a room....I am only the messenger.

Beca,
I have no problem with 5 people in a 1BR or a Studio if that is the DVC policy. I was only concerned with a question stated as follow: Does DVC/Disney count guests to make sure that there are only four in a studio or one bedroom? This appears to be a total disregard of the policy whatever it is.

JR

When I spoke to MS yesterday trying to figure out our Nov trip I was told that 5 in a studio is a no-no. They do ask who will be in the room. But 5 in a 1 bedroom is ok. They did ask me first the ages of who would be in the room and told me that 5 is not allowed in a studio due to fire codes. Just repeating what I was told.

Got it...I just misunderstood you, I think. I thought you were upset because people were telling renters that it is now the policy of MS to allow 5 people in a one bedroom.

When I stated that it was okay to have 5 in a one bedroom, what I meant to say was that it is now okay with MEMBER SERVICES to have 5 in a one bedroom. It is a new "official" policy that happened a few months back. From what I understand, there will be no published changes to the room occupancy limits (all literature will still say 4) but MS is now allowing 5, and guides are now telling prospective buyers they can stay 5 in a one bedroom, but no additional linens will be provided.

I was not encouraging anyone to break the rules (people do that enough without anyone's encouragement). I meant to correct the OP's statement:

"We see that the official line on the studios and one bedroom villas is that they sleep four."

MS policy as I have now been told, is 5 in a one bedroom with no extra linens provided.

Just wanted to clarify,

Crisi, Wasn't the original post a question about occupancy? Or did I miss something?

We are "empty nestors" that raised five children and have "crowded in" many times also, with the awareness of the rentor. My point is that this is a question for member services. If they agree, than the question of comfort is appropriate for this board.
Just my opinion, sorry if I offend someone.

JR

Yes, but debate beyond answering her question is for the occupancy thread, or this will get shut down. Her question being answered, its probably time to shut it down anyway. People have strong opinions on occupancy, so the moderators, in their infinate wisdom, have decided there is one place for occupany debate.

We put four people in a one bedroom, with one being 1 1/2 yrs old, and it was tight. The fight for the bathroom in the am was not fun at all, and we had to rotate who was sleeping on the sofa bed (even though we own the dvc membership and brought this relative as a nice thing to do).

The next time we brought people, we sprung for a one bedroom and a studio, and it made things run so much more smoothly. We had the kitchen for cooking, two bathrooms in the morning rush, and enough actual beds for the adults so no one was complaining about back pain the next day.

I've stayed in a 1 bedroom with 3 other women twice. I thought the bathroom in the morning would be a problem. 4 women getting ready at once, yikes! But it turned out fine. I would usually take my shower before breakfast, others took their turns after. It wasn't a problem at all. For sleeping, we had 2 in the king, 1 on the sofa and 1 on an aero bed that we put next to the king (BWV and VWL).

At OKW there would be room for 5. The OKW units are larger than the other resorts. There is the King bed in the bedroom, the queem pull out couch, and then the other couch that sits right next to it could be slept on (it is only 2 cushions long, though), or there would still be floor space for a sleeping bag or (small twin)air mattress. My son is almost 9 and I don't think he'd mind sleeping in a sleeping bag for a while there - even a week or so. In fact, when we camp - he's on the hard ground in a bag for a week and does just fine! There are no rollaway beds, though. Yes - technically only 4 are allowed, but I do know of many instances on these boards where people have been told that 5 in the 1 bdrms are fine by the CM's at the resorts.
They are much more particular, it seems, about the studios, however! Not as much room the bend there. And even the studios in OKW don't have the floor space for a 5th person to sleep. A baby in a crib, perhaps, but not a child.

I was going to say this as well. OKW 1 bdrms are much roomier than the other villas.

We fit a twin size aerobed in the Master br or you could use a full size aerobed in the living room with a little one sleeping on the couch. Just my two cents.

If MS tells you it's OK to have 5 people in a 1BR, then they shjould supply a bed of some sort for the 5th person.

My point being, you'll have 2 people in the king size bed, 2 people in the queen size pull-out couch. MS should be supplying a cot for the 5th person if they do tell you that 5 is now OK in a 1BR.

That being said, in the past the occupancy limits for a 1BR were 4 people. If you had a 9 year old and a twin size aerobed, there are places to put it. If your 1BR is at OKW, there is plesnty of room in the "greatroom" area for an aerobed, even with the pull-out sofa opened. If you are in one of the other resorts, I'd probably put the twin aerobed in the kitchen during the night, to have it out of the way.

We just had 5 in a 1 bedroom at OKW and SSR this past June and there were no problems with member services. They just said no additional bedding. Five room keys were issued and these were needed for EMH. We had no problems with space or the bathroom, but we were 2 adults and 3 children ages 11g, 10b and 5g. The girls took the king bed and the boys took the pull out. OKW obviously had more space. I did have a problem with the amount of towels, 4 bath towels for 4 people didn't go far for us, so I happily paid the $6.00 for an additional pack of towels and then made use of the w/d.

We lived in a house for the longest time that had only one bathroom. I think this would be a great topic for a poll - how many bathrooms do you have in your main residence and how many people live there? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Have a great trip!
