That type of thing maybe alright for a regular competition but not the olympics!

She's the Leon Lett of snowboarding.

You know, these athletes need to think about how stupid they will look and feel if they don't win before doing something like showboating. She's going to be remembered for this and she has no one to blame but herself.

She was way ahead of everyone in the snowboard cross and pretty much guaranteed the gold. On the last jump she did a little twist/flourish and fell. She ended up with the silver.

These athletes are so young. I think sometimes they get carried away with the excitement and good judgement suffers.

What happened?

ETA: Nevermind.....I see the response above.

How about this quote from her:

"I was having fun," she said. "Snowboarding is fun. I was ahead. I wanted to share my enthusiasm with the crowd. I messed up. Oh well, it happens."

"Oh well, it happens," she says?????? She just lost getting a gold medal at the olympics and she says, "oh well"
Well maybe its that kind of attitude that lost it for the USA. It seems to me that some of these athletes are forgetting that they are there representing their country not just themselves.

:rotfl2: That was GREAT!!! I haven't laughed that hard in a long time!!!

I have to say, I was laughing too. She just looked ridiculous.

Then when asked about it, at first she tried to deny she was showboating. She said she did the twist to "maintain stability". Uh, yeah, right! She sort of admitted it later on, but still, you made a dumb decision, own up to it.

Maybe I'm a sap, but I thought, what a shame. She's a kid who got caught up in the moment. I'm sure she feels worse than anyone.

What an idiot.

If I were one of her sponsors, I'd be asking for my training money back.

Thanks for the explaination. Someone needs to teach that you don't showboat till the end!

WOW, I really think people put WAY too much pressure on a young girl. She messed up...big deal! It's not like she's a heart surgeon....she's a snow boarder!! I can't think of anything more inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Everyone should be PROUD of her for getting the silver medal, not making fun of her for not getting the gold. America's priorities are extremely skewed.

ITA.

It's the nature of that sport to show flurish. She did get caught up in the moment. If she hadn't fallen, everyone would have thought it was cute (or even a show of appreciation to her fans).

People need to give her a break. She's accomplished a GREAT deal at her age. I think some peope are bitter because they wanted the USA to have another gold. I'm still proud of her. She will learn from it and will move on -- if people let her.

How old is she? Her brain isn't fully formed until after she's 18. :rotfl:
That said, I'm sorry she lost the Gold, but I do admire her for getting there in the first place. :thumbsup2

She's 20 I believe.

The whole trick she did was downright stupid to begin with and then she plays it off in the interview like she needed to do it to balance herself. I guess she had to learn this lesson the hard way. It was quality entertainment! Very funny indeed.

She learned an important life lesson. Don't count your chickens before they hatch. The sad part is that she learned it such a public way.

I was watching and felt terrible for her. It was an extremely foolish move on her part, but I still have sympathy. She is young and probably doesn't even realize the significance of what has happened.

Dudes (and dudettes) - it's no problem. It was really gnarly out there (she actually said that) and now she and Bode can go out and get wasted.

I actually feel really badly for her parents and coaches who worked with her - but I hope she showed some kids an important lesson: showboating can cost you a Gold Medal.

That's some "sport" they have there. The future of Winter Olympics I guess.

She messed up. Big time. But in the grand scheme of thing, who cares. Anybody feel less proud as an American because we only took silver in the Woman's Snowboardcross? I was discusted by Jimmy Roberts commentary - he basically called her the worst person in the history of sports and said she'll wake up every day for the rest of her life knowing she blew a gold medal. As for her sponsors, they are *loving* this. You don't hear anybody talking about Seth Wescott, do you? (Seth won the men's gold in the event).

Just to bring up a postive event... did you guys hear what happened in the women's team cross country event? A Canadian skier breaks her pole. As she struggles, a Norwegian coach reaches out and gives her a spare. The Canadians go on to take silver. Norway finished fourth. That's sportsmanship.

I think some peope are bitter because they wanted the USA to have another gold.
For me it has nothing to do with the color of medal she won, or if she got one at all!If she had done her best and not placed,I'm fine with that. If she did her best and fell and lost out completely or got Silver or Bronze, I'm fine with that.My problem is, she apparently doesn't care if she wins or not, would rather show-boat and stay "cool" than give a fig that she's representing her country at the Olympics and she can't speak. Sorry, I'd rather have our athletes lose than half-compete and say "Oh well, no big deal".

Just so you don't think I am anti-snowbarding,I 've been rooting for Bode Miller to lose all Olympics, does that make me un-American? He's a disgrace! If you want to act that way, fine, but don't go representing our country and acting that way.
