OLD THREAD: 2012 Beach and Yacht FAQ, Part 2- May, June and July DON'T POST HERE!

Mike - I can check the lighthouse for you.

I'm also checking the mattress situation for another poster.

Anyone need me to check out anything else?

We are finally all packed. We are leaving around 3:00 this afternoon and hope to be at RPR by 8:00 tomorrow morning. This is our first time leaving in the afternoon. We always left around 9 PM - wish us luck!

Do you always drive? We are considering that the next time.
Have a great trip!

Not at Y&BC but I know a bunch of us love LeCellier and the lunch since the 'Signature' change last year.

Thanks for all the safe travel wishes!

Mike T and YCFAN - we will be waving as we drive through the Carolina's!
Nettie - on the way home we are actually do our sleep over stop in Lumberton!
Just want to get a few hours of sleep. On the way down we drive straight through.

This is our third time driving. The other eleven we flew. To tell you the truth the way the airlines nickel and dime you for everything now I'd rather drive.

As most of the BC/YC thread knows we had such an awful experience switching flights after dd broke her leg that it really soured me on flying.

I feel like we are more in control now. DH and I drive straight through (pack food and drinks) and only stop for gas, coffee and bathroom breaks. We always stop on the way back. Most times we did 3 or 4 nights in Hilton Head but this year we are taking a short get away to Hilton Head in September for d's birthday. So we are staying one night in Lumberton.

CAN'T WAIT TO GET ON THE ROAD!!!!!

Robyn I am so directionally challenged it is sad.....We always fly but sometimes I think driving would be neat but I get antsy after a few hours. But I am in Pgh, PA - is it further for me or you to Orlando - I saw you are in NJ....DH is so against driving it and I always get crazy cheap flights from PGH to MCO but there is something to be said for being in control of your arrival/departure, etc......

Ok I just checked, you are 60 miles further away from MCO than me....Can byou tell me what side trips you do when you drive?

I have more one more week before my waitlist request gets cancelled. I'm crossing my fingers that we get to come home to the BC at the end of July! If not BWV here we come!

I just caught this Mike! Even though we did not have the DDP on our last two trips, we did go there for lunch to save a few bucks! I didn't mind the smaller portions for lunch as my family always leaves there stuffed anyway. The last two years we just ended up having appetizers and snacks for dinner on our Le Cellier days!

Robyn!

Have a safe trip and a traffic jam free ride. When we drove down we pulled off at "South of the Border" just to do a drive through and look at all the wackyness that lives there. The buildings are.... shall we say unique!

For those of you who may be down at the Beach/Yacht club during the Third Annual BC/YC Dis Meet on Sunday, July 22 at 6:30 pm in the Beach Club Solarium.......

DON'T BE BASHFUL! Stop on by. All of these people are really friendly and new people will be welcomed with open arms. I realize everybody is really busy running around while they are at Disney but just stop in for 15 mins. to say hi and join the fun.

I'm planning on being there... Kinda. :confused3
To see what I mean stop by and check it out!

Hi Scottmel,

I live about 20 miles west of the Pittsburgh airport and we've driven down the past two years. (This year we are actually going to fly---I got a great deal on direct flights for us on SW...I paid $886 for 4 tickets, now it's $1375). Part of the reason we usually drive is that my mom lives in NC, which sort of halfway, and she also made the past two vacations with us.

Our usual route is Hwy 22 to Hwy 18 to Washington, PA, then we get on I-70/79 and continue on I-79 south to Hwy 19, which intersects with I-77 at Beckley, WV. We continue south on I-77 and pick up I-26 at Columbia, SC, which takes us to I-95 south through GA and FL, then go on I-4 West to Orlando. My mom's house is roughly 6.5 to 7 hours from our house and then it's about 9 hours from her house to BC.

I have friends who have driven and they have said that Rock Hill, SC is roughly halfway (just south of Charlotte, NC).

Some of our stops have been.....New River Gorge Bridge at Fayetteville, WV. There is a nice little visitors center with clean restrooms and some walking/hiking trails with views of the bridge. It's a good place for the kids to stretch their legs. Not too far from there is Tamarack in Beckley, WV which has WV crafts, etc. (DH won't let me stop there!)

When you get into NC (and to some extent VA), there are lots of small wineries, some with restaurants. We've gone to some of those with my mom, because there are several in her immediate area. I think there's a website www.visitncwine.com that would be a good resource if that interests you.

In GA, we've stopped in Savannah, but that's because my dad lives in that area, but we haven't gone to downtown Savannah since we lived in Charleston, SC (which could be another side trip....it's about 60 miles from downtown Charleston to the I-95/I-26 intersection).

Funny that is EXACTLY what we did this past June.....

THanks Cindydare!

I too get the 79 or 99 flights from PGHT to MCO and we are only a partyof 3 so flying is pretty cheap. In fact I earned 800 in free sW gift cards for opening visas and 2 free round trips. We will have used all this to fly for free the last two years and AGAIN this summe rI have enough let. But after that....I will be paying cash. But still, the gas, the hotel, etc. For a party of 3 and cheap airfare you can't beat flying. I would consider driving though for a beach stop somehow on the way home but don't think that really splits my trip in half....Would Raleigh NC or Hilton Head be on the way home to Pgh at all? Dh says I am insane...but I think it would be kind of fun ...

Hilton Head is on the way home (it's going to be a long way back to PIT from there), but Raleigh would be a little out of your way. When we lived in Charleston, SC, if we drove non-stop (minimal bathroom/food stop---we could do it pre-kids), the quickest we ever made it to Weirton was 10.5 hours. For our trips to Pawleys Island, SC, we've always stopped at my mom's house to break up the trip, but it's about 11 or 12 hours total. DH is very happy that my mom isn't coming with us this year and that we're going to be flying.

Last year, we bought Shell gift cards from Kroger (to get fuel points here for gas) for the drive down and back, and I think we ended up spending about $400 total on gas, but it took 2 days going down and 2 days coming back because of our stop in the middle, and we're usually exhausted by the time we get to Disney and extremely exhausted by the time we get back home. I have friends who drove straight thru last May coming home, and I think it took them about 17 hours.....DH says no way on driving straight through!

As long as we can get a good deal on airfare, I think we'll probably fly from now on....with the 576 airport connector, I can be at the airport in about 20 minutes, door to door. We'll see how our September trip goes....we have a 6:05 am flight to MCO and a 7:15 pm return flight to PIT....and it's the first time flying for both of the kids. :)

OK, so I'm getting back on the healthy eating (WW) and exercise bandwagon very soon, and I mentioned to DH that a good motivation for me would be doing the TOT 10 miler in 2013. He was very encouraging! I really need to do something to get me up off the couch again... I was doing 5ks about 3 years ago but I've slowly put on about 40 pounds since then and feel very bad about it... My cholesterol is up, and I feel badly about my size, but I need some motivation. I'm worried about the what though... I think it's in September, which is enough time for me to be able to do it, but I'm concerned that the heat will kill me!!! LOL. Thee is a famous 10 mile race here in July so I may aim for that, and have the TOT 10 mile as the reward. September will also be hard with taking the kids out of school. Can't imagine they'll let me go without them! LOL
