Robyn I am so directionally challenged it is sad.....We always fly but sometimes I think driving would be neat but I get antsy after a few hours. But I am in Pgh, PA - is it further for me or you to Orlando - I saw you are in NJ....DH is so against driving it and I always get crazy cheap flights from PGH to MCO but there is something to be said for being in control of your arrival/departure, etc......
Ok I just checked, you are 60 miles further away from MCO than me....Can byou tell me what side trips you do when you drive?
Hi Scottmel,
I live about 20 miles west of the Pittsburgh airport and we've driven down the past two years. (This year we are actually going to fly---I got a great deal on direct flights for us on SW...I paid $886 for 4 tickets, now it's $1375). Part of the reason we usually drive is that my mom lives in NC, which sort of halfway, and she also made the past two vacations with us.
Our usual route is Hwy 22 to Hwy 18 to Washington, PA, then we get on I-70/79 and continue on I-79 south to Hwy 19, which intersects with I-77 at Beckley, WV. We continue south on I-77 and pick up I-26 at Columbia, SC, which takes us to I-95 south through GA and FL, then go on I-4 West to Orlando. My mom's house is roughly 6.5 to 7 hours from our house and then it's about 9 hours from her house to BC.
I have friends who have driven and they have said that Rock Hill, SC is roughly halfway (just south of Charlotte, NC).
Some of our stops have been.....New River Gorge Bridge at Fayetteville, WV. There is a nice little visitors center with clean restrooms and some walking/hiking trails with views of the bridge. It's a good place for the kids to stretch their legs. Not too far from there is Tamarack in Beckley, WV which has WV crafts, etc. (DH won't let me stop there!)
When you get into NC (and to some extent VA), there are lots of small wineries, some with restaurants. We've gone to some of those with my mom, because there are several in her immediate area. I think there's a website
www.visitncwine.com that would be a good resource if that interests you.
In GA, we've stopped in Savannah, but that's because my dad lives in that area, but we haven't gone to downtown Savannah since we lived in Charleston, SC (which could be another side trip....it's about 60 miles from downtown Charleston to the I-95/I-26 intersection).
