hi all,

We have Radio Shack walkie talkies purchased in 1999 for our road trip (moved from Florida to Maine -- no comments please! ;)). They worked well between cars on I-95. But now I see family radios are way more advanced. Should I bother bringing them to the parks?

fast answers appreciated -- we leave Monday at 4:00am!

We use our old ones and have pretty good luck with them. Do yours have subchannels? That seems to make a difference because at times there are lots of people using the same channel and it helps to be able to change.

The first time we used the walkie-talkie with 10 channels. All I can say is that they were better than nothing. Getting out at the Magic Kingdom was almost imposable. Last year we switched to Nextel. I understand you can rent them.

There is so much chatter from everyone else -- I don't think I would even bother. In all of our trips we have always managed to set a meeting place or find each other. It's never been an issue. My kids are 13, 11 and 9.

Ok, we're not bringing them. They don't even HAVE channels!! thanks for the advice folks!

We have some inexpensive Motorolas that we purchased in 2000 and used them with great success on our trip during President's week. Ours do have quite a few channels and we managed to find one that no one else was on (maybe because a lot of folks were using cell phones.) We often separate to go shopping or on different rides and have found the radios indispensable. I'll give you one example - DH and DS went off early to MK while I slept in. We planned to meet at the Kona Cafe (Polynesian) for lunch. I got there exactly on time and waited about 20 minutes. Then I called them on the radio and they were on the monorail heading towards the Polynesian!!!

We decided that we didn't want to use our cell phones because we incurred roaming charges. There may be other plans that don't incur the roaming charges and then the cell phones would be a great choice.

Do your two way radios still work? Did you use them successfully (the kids answered them promptly when they rang, the airwaves were not too busy with chatter, you and the kids could accurately describe where you were and where to meet, etc.) on your last trip? If the answer to both questions is yes, go ahead and use them again.
