OKW to Epcot--walk?

Good morning, all! We're going to be making our first visit to OKW, and while I think I have a good handle on the OKW--DD walking possibilities, I'm still trying to figure out if it's possible to walk from OKW to Epcot. Any info would be appreciated!

Actually, it is really close but I don't think there is anyway to walk it. We have always taken the bus.. I have looked and I can't seem to fins a way to walk it.. Now DTD is easy, you just follow the path. it is a lot closer than you think too.

If you are a long distance walker.. I guess in theory it's possible to walk anywhere.. but for us average folks, the answer is "no - you can't walk from OKW to Epcot" - at least I wouldn't do it.

That is alot of walking and most, if not all, of it is on roads with no sidewalks, and lots of traffic.

You'll get a more accurate response from soe of the "elders" on the board, but I don't think this is something you'd want to consider.

OKW is my home resort, and I have contemplated the walk from there to DD (if my room was at the far end of the resort - no way if I was by the other end). However, I have never done that. It's probably about a 3/4 mile walk, I'd guess.

On the other hand, I believe from OKW, Epcot is a HIKE - I mean a LONG HIKE. I, personally, wouldn't consider it.

While Epcot parking lot is just across the road from OKW, it is nearly impossible to walk there. The roads and landscaping get in your way, and the roads are not really designed for safe walking. When we purchased at Disney Vacation Club (before the name was changed to OKW), they called it an "Epcot area resort". If you look at an arial view, it is VERY close to Epcot, but definitely not walkable because of the roads.

IIRC, Disney security will pick up walkers who are on the roadways - it's just not safe. Unless there are sidewalks or walking paths, it is never a good idea (for your own safety) to walk somewhere on Disney property. Take the bus.

Distance wise ( I am a "long distance walker" ) it would be a piece of cake, but; it's not safe to do it. You'd have to cross some 'major' roads-all very busy-no sidewalks or signals nor crosswalks. I recommend you don't plan on it.

If you're looking for a good walk, try this:
1) walk to DTD, enter near cirque, walk to marketplace bus stop.

2)Bus to MGM, take walkway to the Boardwalk, enter thur international gateway into World Showcase, go right around the lagoon, walk to monorail

3)take monorail (transfering at TTC) to CR, get out and visit MK, then reverse the walk.

We've taken cabs to and from OKW and it was about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. It seems longer but it is very close. Call OKW Guest Relations and they maybe able to give you directions.

I'd be interested to know if this is possible. I always assumed that if you tried to walk along that road from OKW over to Epcot that the Disney police would stop you and tell you it was against their rules, as well as unsafe. So I figured no one could get away with it. I'd love to know if anyone's successfully done this.

I'm still trying to figure out why you would want to walk under those conditions. If it is just for the sake of walking, I'd do as DVCconvert says. Long circuitous route, but you would get your excersise. I usually get plenty of walking inside the parks, so having to walk to get to them isn't a perk for me. If you are walking for excersise, use the paths, sidewalks and such around the resort and between the resort and DTD. If you are just trying to get to Epcot, take Disney transportation. The bus will pick you up near your villa, and about 10 minutes later, you will getting out safely at the entrance to Epcot. BTW, OKW is one of the closer bus stops to the entrance at Epcot.

It would be nice if they would put more walking paths and routes around. Not just from OKW, but from anyplace to anyplace else. There are a lot of walkers around, and with the bikes available, it would be nice to do that also.

OKW is actually right next door to Epcot, there is no path there however.

To get to Epcot from OKW, you would have to walk along 536, which is a 3 lane road in each direction with I think a 50 mph speed limit. It wouldn't be safe to put a walking path along a road like that.

If you were able to go in a straight line (not possible due to landscaping) OKW is the same distance as the Dolpin is from EPCOT.

The closest part of Epcot, straight line distance from OKW, is Epcot's CM parking lot and CM's entrance.

For guests, there are only two entrances. Walking to the main entrance would be to walk along Epcot Drive, similar to walking along an interstate highway, but one without a breakdown lane. You'd be in the tall grass all the time.

The other way would be to walk to the International Gateway. Safest way there would be to first follow the path to DD, then walk along Buena Vista to the Boardwalk, then follow the boardwalk pathway to Epcot's entrance. Problem here is that Buena Vista is 3-lanes of 45mph traffic with no sidewalks. You would also have to cross the overpass over Epcot Drive. There's no sidewalk on the overpass.

Remember that eventhough many things are physically close together within Disney World, the place is designed to make everything feel far apart so that when you're in a park, you feel completely removed from the outside world.

Even the OKW pathway to DD is twice as long as the straight line distance would be if you could just walk through the golf course, trees, and parking lot.

I agree that safety considerations and Disney policy make walking to Epcot a non-starter.

I do think it's curious that there is a group of people who seem to like the idea and wouldn't think twice about walking if there were a safe, legal way to do it. Folks are looking for places to walk. On the other hand, the thought of walking from some OKW villas to the Hospitality House just seems to overwhelm others! I guess different folks is what makes the world go round!

I remember one trip where we were standing at the South Point bus stop in the afternoon. We heard this very loud music coming from across the highway. We figured out what it was later that week when we saw the afternon parade at the WS. That made me realize how close we were to Epcot.

After you get a feel for where you are in the world, you discover that sometimes the Disney signs don't always send you on the shortest route to your destination. I wondered if that was designed to keep you sightly confused, but it is probably designed that way to handle the worst case scenario traffic.

Don't try to walk to Epcot. It's a short bus ride and you can get in all the walking you want once you get there.

No it is not possible unless you are foaming at the mouth and like to walk at night where you may not get caught. WDW would go nuts over anyone trying to walk along their highways. The only time I ever saw any humans walking along the highways at WDW was during the marathon when they had police protection-they were actually jogging. A simple answer to your question is "NO"
