There was a woman in front of me at the service desk at Sam's Club trying to return a poinsettia plant she bought in early December for $19.99. The same poinsettia plant is now selling for 91 cents. Well, she brought the plant in and said she wanted to return it and rebuy it for 91 cents. They told her she could not do that, so then she said "Well, then I'll just return it altogether". The clerk said they couldn't take it back, and the woman pointed to the sign that says you have 90 days to return merchandise. The clerk said that doesn't apply to live plant materials. The woman said that it doesn't state that on the sign. They went 'round and 'round on this with me waiting (not so) patiently in line. Finally a manager came and reluctantly returned her money.

I think that the woman had a lot of nerve returning the plant. That's like putting up Christmas lights for the season and returning them after Christmas. To me, I consider the plant "used", even thought you can't technically use a plant. A couple of other people in line thought she had the right to return the plant of she wanted to.

What do you think?

I think that's right up there with trying to return a wedding dress after you got married in it.

They shouldn't have given her a refund. Now they have to do it for everyone who tries to return their holiday plants

that is a sticky situation. personal opinion~ the woman was wrong! but the manager did what he had to do to keep the customer. he also needed to move that line. especially if she looked like she was about to cause a seen. word of mouth advertising can be your best friend or your worst enemy. most happy customers will only tell one or two people about their experience and only if it was outstanding. someone with a bad experience will tell anyone that will listen. it really sucks but that is the way it is.
sorry you had to stand in line behind her.

I believe the law (at least here in MA) says that return policies have to be posted where the customer can see them. So technically, if their return policy didnt state "except for plants" by law, yes they should have refunded her money.
Do I think it was totally cheezy of her to try that? Yes! ;)

I agree that it tacky beyond all reason BUT if it not clearly printed on the sign...and the sign in my store is BIG...the manager did the right thing. Sams will get her repeat business and the word of mouth will get translated into good customer service.

Wow! What a notion - maybe I'll return all my Christmas knick-knacks because they are daring to sell them at a lower price after Christmas! (Ooops. I forgot I've had most of mine for 15 years - but isn't it the principle?)

IMO that lady was dead wrong. Seasonal items (especially perishables like plants, food, etc.) are definately exempt from the return policy. I think she would have lost in court, but won in the world of retail for the reasons worm761 listed.

Some people have large cajones.

Some people are so damned cheap it makes me sick!

When you work in retail and with the public, you see and hear it all. I'm amazed at some of the things people try to pull.

Pretty lame of her, but speaking of Poinsettias...

Does anyone want to take two off my hands??!! :):):)

This is the ONLY plant I am able to keep alive, but I really don't like keeping them around after the Holidays. I feel like a murderer if I throw them out...

Maybe that lady at Sams feels the same way I do. ;)

Very tacky. She would have annoyed me to no end if I was behind her over hearing the nonsense, but unfortunately, I believe she's right.   It wasn't stated that plants were not returnable. I think the plant is "used" too, but she and her tacky self are right. Unfortunately.

I think the lady was wrong and the manager was right.....

This is where Karma (not the DISR lol) comes in...... I beleive that lady will stub her toe or bump her head later today........ :teeth:

While working at Marsha Marshall's we have taken returns on furniture 3 years after the person bought it..... all we required was the original price tag and the receipt..... she had both.

Some people.........

I think the customer was asisine, but the manager did what needed to be done. We have a saying at my company "It is what it is". Pretty much the manager had to do what they did for the greater good so to speak. It was probably not worth alienating the customer over a $20.00 (or .91) plant, but by the same token, I cannot imagine ever having the BRASS to actually want to return a pointsettia 2 days after Christmas!!! Sheesh

My MIL runs the Flea Market at our annual church bazaar. Two years ago, an older man came in and bought a clock/radio. Last year, he brought it back and demanded his money back because it had stopped working!
Maybe he didn't realize that the very phrase "Flea Market" translates to "junk that other people don't want so you can buy it". Let's not even get into the fact that his measly $2.00 purchase price was more of a donation to the church. My MIL was so stunned that he was demanding his money back, so she just gave him his $2. Some people are totally unbelievable. :(

I can't believe that plant woman!
Two words: Tacky Cheapskate

LOL - DH & I read this & both thought the same thing. It sounds just like something his sister would do. (Glad he said it first. LOL)

She once bought CHEAP wooden folding chairs at the Christmas Tree Shop. Used them 2 years (all year - not just at Christmas) -- and then had the nerve to return them because she was moving & wouldn't need them anymore.

We laugh when visiting her house. She has the tags still on everything -- so she can return it. She had a house warming. We looked at all the dangling tags still on the wire decorative shelves hanging on her walls.

I don't get it!!!

I agree with who said it's TACKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in Target on Thursday before ChHristmas, they had signs all over - Please be aware that all Christmas merchandise returned after Christmas will be refunded at the current price that day (Clearance Price). Includes all ornaments, Decorations, Lights, etc. Maybe Sams should do that.

Still, she got what she wanted. And maybe Karma, too LOL

She is an idiot and I if I had been behind her in line, I'm sure I would have told her so. It is people like her who drive up retail prices for all the rest of us. Who do you think is going to eat that $19 loss? The consumers, that is who.
