Ok I Understand the Excessive Wear and Tear

Tape is one of my biggest pet peeves. There is NO REASON to put Scotch tape all over the WOODEN doors at AKL/V. You can argue with me until you are blue in the face and you will NEVER convince me that it is necessary to tape stuff all over the doors. It is defacing hotel property, period, the end.

In general, parents are less strict than they were several generations back. There is a trend of parents who want to be friends with their children, never discipline them, never give them any parameters or rules. These are the parents who allow their children to run through the halls SCREAMING, the ones who allow their children to eat, drink, and spill stuff all over the place, the ones who allow children to jump on beds and couches. These are also the parents who think the rest of us should be thoroughly entertained by these antics and never oppose or disapprove of their little prodigies. Makes me sick.

I like to think I am hard to shock, but there are still things on these boards that shock me. And if people are posting things that shock me, I can just imagine the things they are doing that they DON'T post.

The duct tape for childproofing the villa new member was trying to book a GV over at AKV. Just to give you a heads up.;)

When I get on my kids for not acting appropriately, I've had people look at me like I'm nuts. Guess it's more social acceptable now to let your kid behave badly or run around like a chicken with his head cut off.

I'm not sure the wear and tear is more at DVC compared to other timeshares (my comparison's above were to Disney hotels). Mot timeshares have rotating cycles of around 5/10 years through 7/14 years. The first is a soft goods refurbishment with carpet, upholstered furniture, walls, sheers, mattresses etc. The latter is a hard refurbishment which adds cabinets, counters, tables/chairs, sleepers, drapes, etc. Some of the items could float between the 2 depending on how they've held up (mattresses, couches, chairs, etc). Marriott has a 5/10 cycle that is planned for and the capital reserves are dedicated for. There might be a small special assessment for major unexpected issues or significant upgrades. I was at Marco Island earlier this year and dropped by Eagles Nest, which is a HGVG affiliated resort. Apparently they do a top to bottom redo every 4 years but the difference there is apparently they have smaller dues ongoing then charge the entire redo to the members when it happens.

IMO, DVC has fallen down in this area mostly because they haven't had a master plan but have tried to do pieces here and there then do the entire things when they saw they had to.

Of course it was at AKV. See? I'm not shocked.

I'm with you. I just don't see why its necessary to tape stuff on the door to your room.

Actually she's a newbie BWV owner, who preferred the one floor GV's at AKV. I think she has a set or 2-3 yr old twins and a grandmother, afraid both might tumble down the stairs at BWV or SSR GV.

I remember her because she had quoted a really old post of mine from TUG about DVC resorts capacity(how many types of rooms/resort). It was so old that it had the preliminary numbers at AKV.

I can't disagree with this. I was sitting at hoop de doo and this mother and father next to me kept sending the CM back to the kitchen to get their kids food that was not on the menu. When I was growing up we ate what was put in front of us and if we complained we better have had a good reason.

I am thankful my parents were spankers. I would hate to be what I see in young adults from "progressive" parents.

My parents generation loved to just work hard.

I am a gen Xer. I work hard to play hard and to get ahead.

The current generation, generation y, are self-entitled they just wants to play and do as little work as possible.

I am not making that up, they have done studies. They actually have to teach alternative management techniques for handling Yers because they expect promotions even when unearned. They expect to be praised even for just doing the job they were hired to do.

From what I see kids today think they are as important as adults if not more. We were not raised that way so we know we have to earn our place in the world and nothing will be handed to us.

Now you are just generalizing. I'm sure that there are DVC members and non-members who grew up when I did and don't really care to work hard all the time. And I'm sure there are some DVC members and non-members who are Gen Y and watch their little ones like they were watched. Like an eagle.

I'm sure someone else has done a study on the differences between people raised in NYC vs those raised in the Midwestern country areas.

But back to the subject at hand. I just read on the resorts board about moving the sleeper chair into the bedroom at the All Stars Family Suites. Someone tried it and left it in the kitchen. Someone else tried and moved the ottoman sleeper instead into the bedroom.

We are visiting three DVC resorts and two non-DVC resorts at the beginning of the year. We will have a few things on our door. However, I do buy the no reside little sticky things to put our decorations up.

There is something about AKL/V that draws the tape zealots like moths to a flame. Hmm. Perhaps I will start swiping the tape off the doors and applying it to the mouths of the screaming children running through the halls. That would knock out 2 major annoyances right there. Wouldn't help with excess wear and tear, but I would feel better about things in general. ;)

It's been a long day at the parks walking all over the whole place... No stroller for the adults and you are telling me that you really don't want to put your feet up and relax? What there's no ottoman? The chair isn't a recliner. Grab that coffee table and put those socked feet up. "Welcome Home!"

Are you sure this was not due to allergy concerns? There are many more people with food allergies these days than there was years ago. I have read that it is due to manufacturers "altering" the foods.

Perhaps you are right about AKV and the tape zealots. I've not seen the tape zealots at any of the other resort(perhaps they aren't on my floor). Haven't made it over to AKV yet, and we've stayed at SSR/VWL/BCV/BWV/VB.

I'll put it on my list, but the BLT furniture issue has intrigued me so I'll be there in January. After my annual SSR T-giving trip, which has been tape free in the past 4 yrs.

Common sense dictates that...

1. If you choose to decorate or re-arrange furniture during your stay, prior to your departure, no evidence of what you've done should be present for anyone else to have to clean up, repair or re-arrange.

2. If you and/or yours makes a mess, spills, or put sticky fingers on the walls and furniture (and God knows what else) clean it up! I won't get into the whole issue of what a coaster is for.

Renter/Owners alike have different values/morals and I don't believe that one or the other makes up for more or less of the wear and tear in these villas. Just because I'm anal about certain things doesn't mean everyone has to follow my lead, that I understand, but respect for something that you do not own in it's entirety is a given, it shouldn't be a choice.

We don't alter anything.. this past Christmas my wife added some lights for inside decorations.. that's it.

True. You can't say that one thing applies to everyone but the self-entitlement is an epedimic. So much so that managers are attending classes on how to handle it in the workplace.

There are exceptions to every rule but most of the kids I interact with are ill-mannered. They eat like animals, they have no problems interrupting conversations or inserting themselves into conversations, and they think it is okay to correct adults. They don't respect their parents or other adults.

No, they were making such a spectacle of themselves I couldn't help but overhear that the kids were just refusing to eat the food they were served. The weird thing to me is that the parents were not embarrassed.

DH made sure to point out a door covered in laminated decorations when we were at AKV (Jambo) in June.

It seems to come up in those "decorate your resort room" threads ALL the time. People will be going on about decorating windows and whatever, then someone will invariably pop up and say they are going to liberally apply Scotch tape to the room door at AKL. :headache: And I am invariably the ONLY one who thinks it's a HORRID idea. So I try to avoid those threads.

Fights tend to start when I point out that the doors at AKL are, in fact, INTERIOR doors made of WOOD. This is different than an EXTERIOR door made of METAL, which are the sort of doors you find at resorts where the rooms do not open into an interior hallway. I fail to see how this fact is remotely controversial. Wooden doors are much more likely to be damaged by tape than a metal door designed to withstand the elements. My personal opinion on door decorations has NOTHING to do with the physical difference in building materials. I don't want my dues to go up because the doors have to constantly be refinished or replaced due to all the adhesive. That's all.

Yes, I would LOVE for AKL to ban door decorations. I would LOVE for guests to be required to sign an acknowledgement at check in stating that they understand they are NOT allowed to tape stuff to the doors, and violators will be prosecuted. But it is what it is. :rolleyes1
