We were also there beginning Sunday, May 7 and we had a very different experience. We noticed NO major crowds at all. We logged several hours at the main pool with no problem at all. Most of the time, there were only about 5 kids at the main slide (3 of them mine!) and the rest of the pool was pleasant. Certainly, there were other guests there, but chairs were in abundance and there was never a crowded feeling.
As for check in, we were the only ones in line when we arrived.
At AP, we did not have to wait in line ever...we were there about each night between 5:30 and 7:00 pm. By the second day all of the CMs knew my kids' names, so they did not seem overwhelmed by crowds.
However, many CMs did state that the resort was "unusually full." (Not sure what that means in terms of specifics.) With the Minnie-Marathon on one week-end and Mother's Day at the other end, most on-property resorts were completely full (there are many other threads here on the DIS that discuss this topic).
FWIW, more than one CM told me that another themed pool is coming once the last buildings are complete.
