Off topic.....but please pray for my DS19 months. He started with fever Sunday and was diagnosed with pneumonia yesterday evening, He started with vomiting and diarrhea this morning:sad2:. He is so pitiful. Thankfully MIL is watching DS 9 months today like she did yesterday. Of course, all he wants to do is lay on me so I haven't able to go to the y since saturday and I'm not gonna get there until he gets better. My sweet boy takes priority:hug:.

Poor baby. Hope everyone is doing better soon.

Does anyone else feel like they are breaking down?

This morning, I woke up and I must have slept with my right knee in a weird position (not unusual with several dogs trying to get spots too) because it hurts.

Now my left hamstring/butt cheek is killing me.

I felt good during my 6 miler yesterday and even afterwards. I wake up this morning and I have issues! :confused3

I am so ready to taper! And last week was a shorter long run for me (13)!

Thanks to everyone for the sympathy on my injured foot. Anti-inflammatories + ice + rest (as much rest as someone who spends all day on her feet can take!) has helped. I'm doing ecoaching with Jeff Galloway and he gave me permission to try walking 30 minutes today. I did it on a treadmill so I could control my pace (I tend to push too hard - and it was raining!). I walked 30 minutes at 3.5. It was frustrating to not be able to go faster but I didn't have pain. I'll try again with a 30 minute walk on Thursday.
I'm a little worried about missing my long run (I was doing a back-to-back weekend - 10 miles on Saturday/24 on Sunday and I did 10 and 10 instead). I've done one weekend with 8.5 miles on Saturday and 21 miles on Sunday. Hopefully I'll survive my next mega-weekend (the weekend before Christmas).
Obviously my goal right now is to let my foot heal!
I'm also wondering (Coach? Anyone?) about my ability to do the Goofy. Not this time because I'm stubborn and I'll finish but in general. Every back to back weekend has caused some setback for me. Minor injuries that only lasted from a few days to a week but it seems that my body doesn't like the back to back. It may be a fault with Galloway training (not enough mid-week miles). Or maybe my body just needs the rest. Thoughts? (I'm 41 years old and, from a running perspective, could lose 10 lbs but I'm not really overweight - although I wonder if I'd get less injured if I lost the weight?).

:wave2:

When last I posted it was right before my surgery. I had the surgery the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, so almost two weeks ago. We've been gradually starting to walk again. I've done a couple 2 mile walks and a couple of 4 mile walks. The last one was yesterday and we managed about a 15:40 pace. I did do a little bit of a trot for about 30 seconds and while I'm clearly not ready to run yet, I can tell I'll be able to get to at least some level of running before the marathon. I think if I put some strong bindings around my chest, it will help as well. I haven't yet met with the oncologist, but am hopeful that we can delay chemotherapy until after the race and I'm feeling more confident that my surgical recovery will be far enough along to allow us to complete the run without getting swept. :thumbsup2

You have such a great attitude!:wizard:Praying that your recovery from surgery continues to go well and for your overall health!

Awww. Hope he feels better soon. Prayers for his well being.

I miss having babies that little. I couldn't get mine to snuggle with me if I paid them.

--------
I just noticed you have two babies ten months apart. How do you have time to run? OMG, I'm tired just thinking of it.

Actually that was a typo on my part. My other is 7 months old. They are 12 months apart....which now that I think about it, doesn't make much difference as far as the level of tiredness I would experience:laughing:.

Thankfully we have a y membership (they have a financial aid scholarship that we qualify for. The y has a nursery and they will keep your kids(6 weeks to 14 years) up to two hours a day. I try to go every day because it keeps me from completely losing my mind:thumbsup2. They have a lot of good classes and I get to interact with other adults:cloud9:. For my long runs, my MIL always makes herself available if I need her(plus she has a really nice flat neighborhood).....or for the shorter long runs my hubby watched them if he is available. But yes......I am definitely tired. All the time. But I am happy:dance3:.

I didn't run at all last week and went out for my 18 miler on Sunday and only made it a mile before I had pain and called it quits. It wasn't bad pain but I knew it would get progressively worse so I went home. Now I only have pain when I stand too long or when I walk a short long distance.

I went to the Sports Med guy this morning. He diagnosed me with a Baker's Cyst and prescribed Mobic for inflammation. Running is up to me. My body is my guide. I'm not running today, or tomorrow (birthday dinner) and will try a short run on Thursday and see how it goes. If all goes well I'll attempt my 20 miler on Sunday, and call it quits if I have pain again. I want to push myself but not push too hard. It's a fine line, kwim?

Oh, he also asked if there was a group of us going to Disney because he's seen several patients in the past week or so that are headed to Disney in January. It must be peak injury time. :p

Anyway, Zelly, you are such an inspiration.

I hope everyone heals up and is able to accomplish their goal. :)

I do not have a really great formula that works well but intuitively, Training Effect (TE) = time x intensity. So a 10% higher intensity level at the same time represents a 10% increase in TE. So for a trail run one could (or at least I see) see up to a 15% increase in intensity from the higher foot lifts, lighter touches and faster turn over. Pushing a race pace on a trail would add to the increase in intensity. I guess I should also back up and say that intensity is a factor of mass moved, elevation changed and speed. (There are more variables including hydration, illness and other physiological variables) . Counter balancing the increased intensity from the tails is a possible lower time active. So there is a possibility that a race pace may deduct from the increase in intensity.

Nevertheless, I think your training equivalents are close. The delta between the two weeks is about 19%. At worse, I would say you were maybe a mile or so short on those days, but well within a training plan tolerance. You get a gold star for effort on this one! Austin trail runs are so much tougher than the ones around Houston due mostly to rocks.

Thanks....the 2nd trail run was at Rocky Hill Ranch...aptly named. And...I wouldn't normally go run 4 hours on the road, no matter what the training plan says, so I figure the constant (more or less) movement is good. The first trail run was perfect cool weather. Last weekend was hot and humid, as you know...there were definitely parts of the run I had to push through so as to not sit down in the middle of the trail and cry. LOL (besides...I didn't want to get lapped by the full marathoners)

Threw out my back today...wth? I think I just twisted wrong...it had better loosen up!

That's great, Zelly! Lots of pixie dust for continued recovery and training!

I always wash them in the gentle cycle and hang to dry. I'm thinking they just don't last more than a year. I can use them for my shorter runs and just sew up the seam as I have a few pairs that I circulate. I do prefer the thickness of the performx compared to my revolution tights so it just sucks.
I wash mine in a lingerie mesh bag and hang to dry. After one month, I had a random hole smack in the middle of the thigh! Not on a seam or anything. I have two pair that I wear occasionally but not regularly anymore.

COACH - pixie dust for the job!

I completed my 17 miler this weekend - much to my surprise! I've been having trouble with some foot tendonitis since the Wine & Dine Half, but I was able to finish. There were definitely a few times I thought about calling it quits - not because of pain, more mental - but I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. Now the marathon feels possible!

ZellyB Your great attitude and spirit will surely help you overcome this nasty challenge. Good luck!

irishtwins1112 Hope your DS gets better soon. I remember a time when my son had very bad bronchitis and that in itself was awful--for both him and me!

steph0808 This last month will induce all sorts of craziness. Disney was also my first marathon, and I know I spent most of December paranoid that I would get hurt and worrying over every little ache and pain. Don't be afraid of giving yourself an extra rest day (or two or more!) over the next month if you think your body needs it. Hang in there!

Amanda No advice for you since I am doing Goofy for the first time and definitely undertrained. But you aren't over the hill yet at 41! Don't even think about the long term prospects til after the race. And if you decide "one and done", then that should be fine. Maybe it's just not the kind of race(s) that motivates you. It's a lot of work to train for a marathon--even without the back to back runs (which not everyone seems to think are necessary).

wvjules Happy (upcoming) Birthday! My DH had a Baker's cyst which he had removed. But these days he's not a runner, so I don't know what the healing time was. Sounds like you have the right attitude though.

princessbride6205 Congrats on your 17! Pushing through the mental barriers are so challenging. Sound like you broke through that wall.

As for me, ran 4.5 miles today and through in a couple of up-tempo mile repeats. Can't say they were real "speedwork" miles, but I did give it a try. Part of me thinks I should push harder, and part of me is saying just take it easy and get miles in. I think I can manage that fine line.

If you don't think you can run both days, my suggestion would be to take it easy and walk the 1/2 marathon on Saturday and then run the marathon on Sunday so you're not taxing yourself too much. About the weight, I love my DH when he's at 170 (he's my strong teddy:p) but he has mentioned that his knees feel so much better now that he's at 165. I have so much more endurance since I've lost over 10 lbs. this year. Weight does play a huge roll in all of this. Cut your fat, it worked for me.

That's awesome that you can get in the two hours daily. I would kill for that. My sister has two that are 12 months apart so I know how hard it is.

Feel better!! I can understand about pushing yourself. I really need to up my comfort zone.

Has anybody bought the bib frame or shadowbox for the marathon before? I was looking for something like this to house my medal and such, but I wanted to know what kind of quality it was, if you think it was worth it, etc.

https://www.fondmemoriesgraphics.com/products.php?year=2013&event=30

Thanks!

I have two shadow boxes (Goofy 1 and Goofy5) and think their quality was more than acceptable. You can see them at the expo to get a feel for what their prodcut looks like. Note that a medal comes with the box but you have to supply a photo if that is an option in the box ordered.

Thanks Coach! So the box comes with a medal - but I also get one after finishing, correct? (I want to wear that medal around all week! :P Maybe all month!)

Stop the back to backs. It's that simple. You now have a great feel for what Sunday will feel like and should have some knowledge of how your body will recover between the races.

Stick with Jeff's longest run, or even modify the distances back to 20-21 (or even shorter if your body says to) for the next really long runs.

I would say that if you have made Jeff’s plan this far you are more than ready to make Goofy. Tenacity plays a huge role in making the end on Sunday. Sounds like you are good to go for that.

As far as future Goofies, do the back to back work sparingly. I suggest only running back to back to get an idea of how dead legs feel and how to develop a personal recovery plan.

Good Luck

Most definitely - UNLESS you order well past the marathon.

Rocky Hill is my 2nd favorite bike ranch. I really like it but think Flat Rock has a little more to offer. Maybe it is that Flat Rock is an overnighter for me so I really look forward to those trips. But it is also the cause of a torn rotator cuff.

I agree with Coach C - cut down on the back-to-backs. I am just starting to come to this realization myself. Out of necessity with the holidays I am not going to be able to do another back-to-back this weekend, and I'm sort of relieved. I think you'll be more than ready for race weekend though - having already completed a marathon has to help your confidence (even though Goofy is a whole other event itself), even though I recall the experience wasn't 100% perfect. :)

...[snip]...Oh, he also asked if there was a group of us going to Disney because he's seen several patients in the past week or so that are headed to Disney in January. It must be peak injury time. :p

I've totally been there before! My back gets injured pretty easily and one of the worst times was when I was bowling. :o I was in tears and couldn't move for days. Running really helps loosen it up, actually. Hope you feel better soon, I know just how awful back pain can be.

Thanks!

No...I have all of my medals displayed on this rack:

https://www.medalhangers.com/view/92/Cityscape-Female

Of course after I bought this one they came out with plain ones...which are cheaper and what I really wanted in the first place :rolleyes2:

All of my bibs are in a binder...so boring. :rotfl2:

I ordered my shadowbox for the Half this January and I received it (with its own medal) in February. I was very pleased with the quality.

I noticed that there were two different vendors selling the shadowbox frames so make sure you check both vendors to which style you prefer.

I'm an idiot. I am doing Hal Higdon Novice 1. I apparently put it in my calendar wrong and did 18 this past weekend. What should I do for the rest of my long runs? I am supposed to do 18, 14, 20, 12, 8, race. I already did 18. Should I just do it again? Or do 14, 14, 20, 12, 8, race?

You could do 16, 14, 20, 12, 8 and give your body two mini-cutbacks before you do your 20 miler.
