Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

I was looking at the results from the 2012 marathon and I noticed some people didn't have their split times listed, but had a final time. In a few cases, they missed one or two splits and had another listed. Does anyone know why this would happen?

I would totally love to make one for DH for Christmas :cheer2:! I like the custom rack but can't think of anything inspirational to have written on it. Any suggestions? What a perfect gift!!

I ordered my shadowbox for the Half this January and I received it (with its own medal) in February. I was very pleased with the quality.

I noticed that there were two different vendors selling the shadowbox frames so make sure you check both vendors to which style you prefer.

Hmm, thanks for the info. I just noticed the one that had a coupon through the virtual goodie bag. Might have to check them out at the expo and order one there.

No ideas on a phrase...that's why I got the cityscape one. :)

I'm an idiot. I am doing Hal Higdon Novice 1. I apparently put it in my calendar wrong and did 18 this past weekend. What should I do for the rest of my long runs? I am supposed to do 18, 14, 20, 12, 8, race. I already did 18. Should I just do it again? Or do 14, 14, 20, 12, 8, race?

You could do 16, 14, 20, 12, 8 and give your body two mini-cutbacks before you do your 20 miler.

If you are not looking for time, I would stick with 14 or even 12.

I was just checking my two pair of running shoes this morning and realized that with their current 'wear pattern' and the amount of miles I have planned between now and WDW, I will need to make a shoe purchase now (in order to have time to have them broken in for WDW). One pair will be 'done' by WDW Weekend, so buying a new pair now will ensure I have two decent pair for race weekend.

So just a reminder that everyone should check their shoes now and see where things stand. If you have to pick up a new pair now, you have plenty of time to get them 'broken in' for your Disney races.

The chip does not always register on the mat. THe most common mat missed is the start mat. That is why you see lots of non-elite runners with equal chip and clock times. WIthout the start deduct, the program just assumes the runner crossed the mat at 0:00:00.

If the runner had no times listed other than a finish time, I would believe they had a bib/chip issue. For these folks, the race finish photos serve as proof of a finish time and that is manually added to the results.

Then there are the one or two times missed. THese could be from not actually crossing the mat or the bib/chip messing up. Note that it can be easy for a novice runner to miss some of the intermediate mats as a few do not fully cross the course. They are coned and usually have a person standing by to let folks know when it looks like they are not going to pass over the mat. With regard to the bib issue, the race now uses chips glued to the back of the bib or B-Tags. These are usually dependable, but can get a little wonky. Read the race directions and try to follow them. THe bib really need to be upright and vertical. The better way to affix the bib is to pin to the jersey with four pins. Now that does not mean pinning to your short leg or a number belt is wrong, but it opens a little room for a misread. I wear mine on a number belt that is only pinned from the top. However, I will reach down and make sure my bib is flattened out as I pass a mat. (I also do the same when I see a race photographer just to make sure the number is visible.)

A little more on the bib instructions. The bib manufacturers ask race directors to warn runners against wearing a jacket of anything over the bib as it can block the signal. I and many others have successfully run races with sweatshirts and jackets over the B-tagged bib in the past. It will read the tag; however, if worried, just raise your clothing covering the b-tag to assure it is not covered as you pass a mat.

Sorry, went long

Great catch!. A question always comes up with regard to new shoes and marathons. I would try to have a minimum of your race distance on your race shoes before the race. So 13 miles logged for a half runner and 26 for a full. In general, most shoe manufacturers have figured out how to remove inner seams and other bad spots so break in miles is really minimal. I have run several half marathons in new shoes. As a coach I would not recommend it and as I just experienced with my new out of the box Marathon Newtons, every once in a while a pair will come out of the factory with a stiff spot of goofy seam. Glad I started these shoes out today.

Funny you mention breaking in shoes. Went and picked out a new pair of shoes (Brooks Defyance 5) they are the same as the Adreneline GTS that I had without the stability. Well, they were back-ordered and I really needed shoes. So I went back tried on another few pairs and ended up with Asic Cumulus 14's (felt the most similar to the Defyance). I asked the guy about breaking them In and return policy (main reason I wanted to get them from a running store). The guy mentioned they don't have a "true" break in period and that as soon as you take them out of the box you're just gonna run in them.

Well, tonight was a perfect night in Upstate NY. Even though I got poured on it was in the 60's so I got to wear shorts and really I liked running in the rain. Well after having a pain I. The side of my leg for over a month and havin major difficulties actually doing my runs, I am happy to say I've now had my best run of the year! It felt great and I finally feel like I'll be able to complete my runs with no pain!

Less than 40 days, I've got a countdown at worked and extremely excited! I hope everyone has good runs this week!

Thanks for the reminder. Just checked and found my Adios 2 on sale, so I picked up a couple pair. My current inventory would just expire about the time of the race. I'm not sure I will use these for the race or not yet, but I'm going to bring them. Current plan is Flyknit Racer for the half (racing flat) and Lunar Montreal (green that matches Peter Pan costume) for the full. If it is rainy or otherwise slick then the Adios's will come out as they are the grippiest.

One question that usually comes up from first time Goofy runners concerns shoes. I would seriously consider bringing two pair for the weekend. Run in the more worn shoes on Saturday and then your newer, less worn shoes on Sunday. You can get away with one pair, but if you have any issue with rain, puddle, sweating, a fresh pair of shoes on Sunday would be very welcomed.

I can't multi-quote on my iPad (or I haven't figured it out yet) so I'll just say THANK YOU for all the responses!

I'm going to email Jeff Galloway (I'm doing ecoaching) about skipping the last back to back and just doing the long marathon run. I'm planning to mostly walk the half, as I've done in training. Something like a run 10 sec/walk 50 sec ratio so I stay within time limits.
The foot is feeling better. Not totally healed but better. Jeff had me walk 30 minutes today and that went ok.

This was my thought exactly, remembering how soaking wet my shoes were after the half in '10. I just got a new pair of Brooks Adrenaline 13's (in the lime green no less:lovestruc) and am wearing those for the full. My 12's I will run the half in.

If anyone would like to earn a medal while training, there is a race here in Florida doing a virtual race, entry fee is $30 and you do a 13.1 mile run on your own between now and December 9. You then post on their facebook page of your distance and time (incase you do more than 13.1). They will send out medals after the race and may have to wait 4-6 weeks however for an additional order. The registration ends December 6 I believe. I did it to help me with training to get me over the 13.1 limit. I did 15.75 miles today and completed the virtual race.

If you do register, thanks. They are trying to reach $10,000 for Partners For Life Foundation, created by Lorraine Yaslowitz to memorialize her husband Jeff, a K9 police officer in St. Petersburg, FL lost in the line of duty on January 24, 2011. Last I heard, 15 participants were needed to reach that goal, they had over 240 virtual participants.

That's exactly the plan I made! :thumbsup2 I'm glad to hear it's a good one.

I have a more used pair (used for most of my training) that I'll wear for the half and a less used pair (only used on my longest runs) that I'll use for the full. They are the exact same pairs of shoes so I used a Sharpie on one pair to distinguish them.

The only bad thing about bringing two pairs of shoes is fitting them into the luggage. No checked bags for me, just my carry-ons. I know in the past with just one pair I didn't have tons of room so it's going to be tricky! I may have to carry a pair in my purse. lol

Has anybody bought the bib frame or shadowbox for the marathon before? I was looking for something like this to house my medal and such, but I wanted to know what kind of quality it was, if you think it was worth it, etc.

Thanks!

I have 5 of them with one more on the way. DH has 3 of them also with one more on the way. They do an awesome job and I really like them. I will be doing the Goofy frames for both of us again. We decided that we will do the frames for every Disney race. It's nice you get a second medal.

I signed up last month and just got my personalized bib today!

Yeah you're right, I know I could do that, but I don't like to wear my running shoes other than for running. I'm sure it would be fine to do so, but I prefer not to. So I'll just fit them into my bags somehow. I have some big purses. ;) I figure as long as I use one that fits under the plane seat I'll be good.

I've read the best thing to do is carry your race day gear on the plane. If the airline loses your luggage, you'll still be prepared.
