Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

Little late to jump in, but "Hello everyone"!
I'll be running the Tink. It's my first 1/2 and I've just gotten into running. I've done 2 local 5ks in previous years but never trained for them. :(.
I'm getting a little worried about my training because we've been travelling for the holidays (still aren't home...) and my training has been slack lately. I also have been running on our treadmill since I don't like cold, but it looks like I need to get with it and suck it up. :)
I'll be running the race with my niece, and she just started running (this is her 1st 1/2 too).
I don't have any plans for my race gear so that's another "get with it"! It was good to read this thread because it's refocused me on stuff I need to do. I've never heard of compression sleeves/socks, so I might have to check those out.
I'm also a bit worried when I saw the photos from the other 1/2 because it looks really packed, and I'm worried that my time will get really slowed by people...maybe not though?
Anyway, hello!
Kim

I have a pair of exactly those, but they are the insulated ones for winter running. They are black with the blue stitching. Because of the blue, I call them my "blueberry muffintop pants". lol. They provide so much compression, and not just in the legs, that on me, everything just spills over the top. lol. It's not a good look (for me) but I think thinner people look great in them. Mine are just very, very tight. I love the compression on my legs, but on my waist, not so much. I know people swear by these, and I do love mine, but I will love them more when I'm closer to my WISH goal. :)

Thanks, Melinda! I think I'm going to get the not-insulated ones, as they should hopefully not be too hot even if it's a warm day, but at least my skin won't be exposed. And, I think the compression factor will help for me as well. :)

LOVE the socks-with-the-toes-cut-out idea for my forearms. :) I have plenty of old (military) socks I can use for this. :)

Hi Kim! :welcome: You will find that this is an amazing group of people for support and knowledge on all things Disney, and especially the races. FWIW, this will be my 7th half in 18 months or so. I still feel like I have yet to properly train for one. Not saying that's a wise thing to do . The more you keep at it the more you learn, by observing people, listening to advice here on the board, and learning about yourself with every training run you do. Listen to your body. Remember that you just have to maintain that 16:00 mile, and they don't start counting that until the last runner is over the start line. Depending on your corral, that could buy you some time. Even if you end up in the last corral make sure you are at the start of that corral by getting there early. Good luck, and just breathe, and know you will make it and get that medal. You still have time for some training runs, so get those in. I think its awesome that you are doing this!!! Yes, its a large field of runners but pace is only bottlenecked a few times (based on WDW half and DL half--this is a new course but I'm sure it will be somewhat the same). Most of the time its go at your own pace. You and your neice will do GREAT!! :cool1::tinker:

How's everyone doing? I joined a challenge on dailymile: 2,012 miles in 2012. It's 38 human powered miles per week. Or 5.5 miles per day, average. Run, walk, bike, swim, whatever. I think this is totally doable. The bike component helps me know I can do it. I am going to my first spin class tomorrow where I hear we do 25 miles in one class. OMG. What have I gotten myself into? :lmao::rotfl2: I can't wait until spring when I can get outside and road bike. Too much snow now. Are any of you cyclists as well?

Did 10 miles this week-end at 16:10 pace. Doing a lot of hill work. Hope it pays off like Galloway says it will. Sore shins, so have been using my roller and icing them. Hope it's just a sign of old age and not shin splints! On Thursday, the weather looks good, so I hope to get in 11 miles. Hope everyone had a happy new year!

I'm also a bit worried when I saw the photos from the other 1/2 because it looks really packed, and I'm worried that my time will get really slowed by people...maybe not though?

I agree w/ Melinda~ don't worry about getting overcrowded. I heard that Tink is capped at 10,000, so it's less than the DL and WDW races. The only place where it'll get a little tight is when you enter/exit the parks and when you go backstage from the main area of the parks. That's b/c there's only so much room and so wide they can make the openings. Also, it might not make a big difference b/c it's the end of the race, but after we enter DCA around Mile 11-12 in the Hollywood Backlot area until near the entrance, b/c of all the construction walls that are up, you can only run in the street and not the sidewalks as well. But the public area, DTD and neighborhood is wide open and you should be fine.

How was your spin class? I've always wanted to try, but we don't have one at my gym.

So, no running this weekend. It was a combination of laziness and just my body being tired. But I have 8 or 9 on Thursday and 15 on Saturday, so that's okay. But on a happy note, my running attire for the races are complete!!

Here's my Mr. Smee costume for the 5K:

I have glasses too, and the boxes are those glow in the dark necklace/bracelet thingys that they sell in the park. Found them at Party City for $1!!!

And here are my accessories for the 1/2:

I have a green adidas running shirt (and a pullover if I need it) and either black tights or capris depending on the weather. But I have the boa to attach to my running belt, green laces to intertwine w/ my shoes. And to wear on top of my running hat, my little Tinkerbell Mickey ears. And the bun on the backside!! I'm not a Tink fan, but I have to say, I love it!!

LOVE the socks-with-the-toes-cut-out idea for my forearms. :) I have plenty of old (military) socks I can use for this. :)

This is what I am doing too. I found some really cute knee highs at Target for $2.50. Unfortunately I have to go buy another pair because I decided I had to hem up the thumb holes and my sewing machine ate it :( So now I guess they will cost me $5, but that is still way cheaper then the $30+ they charge for running ones.

I did my 13 on Sat and it didn't go as well as I had hoped. It was still 10 minutes faster then my Princess time, but 35 minutes longer then my 11 mile time. I am just chalking it up to a bad run and moving on. I am doing another 13 in 2 weeks and then I will taper for the race

I got my shirt ready for the run and on Sat I am going to order the supplies for my skirt. I really need to get a move on because time is ticking away.

I did 10 on saturday and it didn't go well either...and I knew it after only about a half mile. It just wasn't going to be my day, and man is that a terrible feeling to know the next 9.5 are going to be a struggle every step of the way. But since I had soooooo much time to think during that run, I decided that it was one of the runs that I could be most proud of. Because how easy would it have been to just turn around after that half mile and give up, you know? I didn't...I fought through 10 miles, and you fought through 13...with no cheering crowds and no medal at the end!!! Not too many people have the mental strength to do that. I can say for sure that a year and a half ago I did NOT. I would have turned around in a heartbeat. For me it was one of those runs that I'll keep in the back of my mind all the time because there's no guarantee that race day won't be one of "those" days and I'll need to remember a run like the one this weekend to get through it!

I still haven't heard back about my shirt design from the lady that makes the iron-ons...grrrr. But I'll give it a few more days since it was a holiday :) My Team Sparkle skirt should be here in the next day or two, and then all I'll really need to do is find some cute, cheap socks to cut up and I'll be all set.

I wonder when they are going to let us download waivers???

I hope this gorgeous weather keeps up. Low of 47, high of 74 degrees in beautiful So. Cal. today :yay::yay:

Wouldn't that be wonderful? :goodvibes

I just checked our flights and we fly from Duluth to Minneapolis to LAX,and get in on Thursday at about 11:30. We will be in Anaheim early afternoon. We fly out on the 2nd late afternoon. I'm excited to get there and spend some time. Considering spending a day in Los Angeles/Hollywood area. We've done that before, but its been a few years, and it was fun.

That will be nice to get there a bit early. I always like to wake up at home and end the day at DL! :tink:

I need to ask some of the long time WISH'ers about the feather in the logo, Melinda. I know it is part of the logo that is not copyrighted and that is why they could use it at sparkleskirts.com on the skirt I bought. Most of them are getting ready to go the WDW races this week-end. Any of you Tink folks who are at WDW meets this week-end could ask for us. :goodvibes

I've heard from several WISHers that compression sleeves help with shin splints. Hope they go away! :flower3:

I think that you are right that if we don't get our waivers today it may not be until next week. Don't they know that Tinks are impatient?!? :rolleyes1

Sorry for the bummer of a run. Glad you got that behind you!

Hi everyone---Has anyone else been having "pre race nightmares"?

Last night I dreamed I over slept and missed the start of the race. No wonder why I don't ever sleep well the night before a race.:rotfl2: Have a good day !

I posted the other day but it is not here! ...

I am a little late joining in but this will be my 1st race in 14 years! My 17 year old daughter is also running it and I know she will do great she is an elite soccer player but it is me I am worried about.

I haven't been training like I wanted to, started a new job and you know how that goes... So I am at a 15.31 min. mile with a walk 3 run 1 and I hope to be doing a 2/2 ratio by race day but we will see.

I have been so stressed about being swept and I have finally come to the realization is, it is what it is, I will do my best and see what happens!

I feel I am in OK shape but I have yet to do a long run... (I know, I know should have already done that) but again I am not expecting any miracles and we will just go with the flow.. :-)

I finally booked my flights last night, I missed out on the big Southwest sale last month (was waiting for the next credit card billing cycle :goodvibes) and the prices finally dropped again yesterday. My flight was actually lower than last month's sale! :cool1:

I hope the folks at RunDisney had a lovely holiday break and are ready to send out our waivers this afternoon!

I love all the costume ideas, it just occured to me that we haven't planned our kids' costumes yet (they are both doing the kids races), so we need to get on that! I think DS wants to wear some of his Capt. Jack Sparrow costume from Halloween and DD will either be a pirate or princess (she loves both!).

Vicki I'm sure the oversleeping nightmares will come soon for me because I have never done a race this early before!

Summer I love what you said about your 10 mile run, mine didn't go as well either. I had lost some conditioning from being sick twice in the last 6 weeks and starting stiffening up really early (like mile 2 :scared1:), but I pushed and still managed to finish with a 16:49 pace (which I think is about what my long run pace is supposed to be anyway). I'm very proud of this run too, it is much harder when there's no crowds, nothing interesting to look at, and no medal at the end! I hope to get my body back to being used to going so far, my 10K 3 weeks ago (right before I got sick again) was pain free!

As a first time halfer, I'm so grateful for all the support and advice everyone has given!

Not yet, but I'm sure they are coming! ;) I remember at the Princess there were lots of texts going on very early in the morning among my WISH group. We can do that too. :tink:

:welcome: Amie! Sorry the poof fairy got your earlier post.

If you can hit 15.31 pace with what you have now I don't think that you need to worry about the sweeper.

I was swept at the Princess in 2011 a bit past mile 8 and I would be happy to share my experience with you. It was a disappointment but not the worst thing that ever happened to me -- not even in the top ten. princess:

It's good that we are all chattering away here because as the race gets closer and the mileage goes down those pre-race jitters are going to show up.

Taper madness setting in early? :lmao:

I totally forgot about costumes for the kids' races! Ack!

I'm not quiet ready to taper yet. I want to get a really long run in hopefully on Sunday.

I'm not going to deal with a costume for DS for the kids race. We purchased a new running "race" shirt and jacket for him. He says he's much faster wearing his new running clothes. ;)

I actually had my 1st race nightmare a couple of weeks ago, but it was about Honolulu not this race. However, in'10 when I was training for my 1st marathon, I woke up the morning of my 1st 20miler and had a full on panic attack. I'm w/ you on the sleep the night before though, I honestly cannot remember a time I slept well the night before.

No taper talk!!!! :rotfl2: I'm jealous of you all. I started up for the LA Marathon, so no taper for me. The 1/2 is my "light" week. I have 17-18 the week before and 20 the week after. I"ll just have to live vicariously through you guys! :goodvibes

I just KNEW they were going to post the link to the waivers today  oh well! I did hear back from a lady about the iron on design for my race day shirt, so I'm so happy about that! The sample she emailed me is so cute...exactly what I wanted! So after I take a few measurements tonight and send to her, she can get those cut out and on their way to me...I always love getting my outfit together!

Are there any "shorter" folks on here that have a pair of compression shorts or capris that work well for them? After loving the calf sleeves, I went to a running store this weekend to try on some of the CWX products, but I found out that I'm just too short for those!! Their capris come almost to my ankles and the targeted compression areas don't hit me in the right spots. The shorts have an inseam so long that they fit me right below my knee and the sales lady at the store said she wouldn't recommend them for me because of that...it was a strange place for them to fall and would either drive me nuts, chafe me, or both. Grr. So far, I haven't been able to find any online that have a shorter inseam....it's REALLY frustrating me. The ones that did not work were 10 inch inseams...I probably need something closer to 7 or 8 inches at the most. If anyone knows of any, let me know!

I guess I am not really tapering at all. I have 5 this Sat, 13 next, then 5, then the race, probably a week off, 5, 13, 5, Princess. Then I am pretty much done until the fall.

What jacket did he get? I need one of those. :thumbsup2

I am surprised that I actually have not had any trouble sleeping a night before a race. I've only done two, but still. I was completely prepared to look at the clock every 10 minutes before the Princess (my first race ever) but nope passed at about 10:30 and did wake up until my alarm went off at 2:30. I am hoping that trend will continue.

For our little Kids Race participant--I picked up a Champion shirt and zip up jacket at Target for him. It really doesn't make him run faster--but mind over matter will help you get to the finish line.

The night before a race I am the one looking at the clock every 10 to 20 min. There is nothing better than not getting any sleep, having bags and dark circles under your eye and trying to look good for that finishers photo.:rotfl2:
