Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

I'll be at GCV in a studio! :goodvibes I saw that you edited your post from earlier -- I was thinking it was going to be a long way to the starting line for you from AKV Jambo. ;)

Have you stayed at the Grand Californian before? If you like AKV Jambo you will like GC -- they had the same architect.

Our race will be here before we know it! :tink:

Hahaha!! For some reason, I thought I was posting on the Princess thread:rotfl:
I stayed at both locations and they have many similarities. Only thing I didn't like was DVC and hotel guests share laundry facilities and it got pretty crowded at times. I am so excited!

Would they at least travel with you? There is SO much going on during the race that I doubt you'd get lonely even if you had to run it solo! They'd be cheering for you! And you might even be able to find someone on the board or elsewhere who is a similar pace that you get on well with! :goodvibes

Very true! My roommates said they would definitely come with me that weekend, so that'll be great!

Yikes! It is 95% full so you will have to decide soon. :tink: We all end up running our own race, no matter what. I am doing this one solo and did the Princess solo -- and I had a great time seeing my WISH friends, too. There is always the DL Half in September as well as all the WDW races, too. Good luck deciding! :flower3:

:rotfl:

I completely agree. I trained with my sister, but I did the Princess solo and I hardly noticed I was solo.
My sister is doing Tink with me and I am a little worried about it because she complains a lot and is already swearing I am going to ditch her (she is VERY competitive with me), which is making me want to ditch her already :rotfl:

That's encouraging! The last half I ran I did with my friend. I thought we would break off and end up running solo, but we ended up pushing each other and running it together, it was great, but I run solo on a daily basis, so I really don't think I'll mind!

I am doing this one as well as the Princes 1/2 solo, travelling solo (since the family will be in WDW in December so can't afford to have everyone go again). You'll be among friends:lovestruc A running friend originally wanted to run this one with me, but backed out. I look forward to meeting everyone, specially those staying at GCV.

Thank you all for your help and advice!!!

Verdict... I signed up on Wednesday so I made the decision just in time!!! My girlfriends said they would be happy to come cheer me on! PLUS I convinced another friend of mine to run it! (Granted, she convinced her bf to run it with her). Regardless, I prefer to run on my own anyway so it'll be perfect!

But if I get lonely, let's be honest, I have a feeling it'll feel like I'm running with a few thousand friends! lol

Hi everyone !!
Just came back from D23 Expo in Anaheim.....it was much harder than running in the DL 1/2 marathon. Run Disney was not represented in the hall that I could find. There was a 1 page ad in the expo guide book.

Give me a 1/2 marathon any day instead of 3+ hour waits for presentations and arena events.

It looked like they had a lot of fun and interesting stuff but wow was it crowded! :scared1:

I think you are right that the DL half will be a walk in the park in comparison! ::yes::

Good luck and can't wait to hear all about it! :flower3:

Saturday is my 10k. I planned on using it for corral placement, but since it is going to be crazy hot (high of 104 that day) I am mainly hoping to not die. :scared1: I am looking forward to getting it over with and taking it easy, running wise, until I start Tink training in Oct.

Good luck to any of our Tinker Bells who are doing the DL Half this week-end! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Please come back and tell us all about it! :cool2:

Also, the Jeff Galloway training plans for the Tinker Bell Half are now on the Run Disney site.

Beginning Runners (those who have been running for less than six months):
23 week training plan

Experienced Runners (those who have been running for at least six months):
Time Improvement - 22 week training plan
To Finish in the Upright Position - 23 week training plan

Jeff Galloway's proven training program has led thousands of runners across the finish line, while reducing the chance of injury to almost zero. For more information, see Jeff's book Galloway Training Programs at JeffGalloway.com.

Enjoy your Labor Day week-end! :tink:

Thanks for posting this! I was planning on starting my training the end of Oct but with this plan I guess I will be starting in a few weeks. :yay: I was planning on doing the plan for time goals. I am a little nervous about some of those crazy long runs, but I want to cut about 30 minutes off my princess time so I am committed to giving it my all. Just remind me of this when I am complaining about doing a 17 mile run on Christmas Eve. ;)

Yeeeah, I think I might do my long run that week earlier instead of on the 24th.. lol!

some more questions if I may? :flower3: How many days do you think one should book for this? This will be my first RunDisney AND my first half! Since the race is starting at o'dark thirty we'll have to be there the night before, but what about that night?
and has anyone seen if there is any kind of discount for entrants in the half? I see the family runs get afternoon admission....
AND, if I am only hoping to finish and not get swept -I am running a respectable 10min mile pace but only up to 4 miles a day (had some family issues a few weeks back and ran 8 miles and my knee said "NO BUENO! You must increase slowly, numpty!" So I am back to increasing slowly! :rotfl:) should I try to pace myself out for about a 12-14 min pace or *try* to keep my 10min mile pace for all 13??
I am new to this running thing! Can you tell?? :rotfl:

coming in for the Tinkerbell 1/2 :cheer2:
I'm travelling solo, have some friends who are also coming down but not at the same time, not sure if I will be running with them or just go on my own, guess it all depends on the pace. I'm a single mom and have to work the travel around the kids so I'll be getting there Friday morning and leaving Sunday afternoon. I wish I was able to stay another day but getting to go run the inaugural race is a treat! I may be signing me and the kids up for the Disneyland 5k run next September as a special incentive to get them into running.

You may want to read the DL Half thread to get some ideas from people who just did the race about the time. Personally, I don't think you can have too much time at DL! ;) I'm coming in Friday morning and leaving Monday morning. I'm thinking we will try to do a WISH meet on late Saturday afternoon.

Read what Jeff Galloway has to say on pacing. It sounds to me like you pace is great now -- that you need to simply work on increasing your mileage. The important thing is to not overdo and injure yourself. :flower3:

The Star Wars 5K looked like it was a blast this week-end. :cool2:

Looks like the DL Half was a ton of fun. :wizard:

If you go to gettravel.com, you can purchase discounted park tickets for the weekend. They also have hotels at discounted rates, but for some of the hotels, if you have an AAA card, you can get a cheaper rate. You'll have to got to the expo the day before or Friday to pick up your bib number and race packet stuff. Also, if you buy the discounted park tickets, you pick them up there as well. As far as how many days, that's all a personal thing. I'm going down Friday, but I'm doing the 5k as well as the 1/2. I'm staying until Monday, just haven't decided what time yet. If a lot of rides are down for a refurb, then early Monday, if most are open, then I'll leave at night. But something to keep in mind is that you'll want to take it easy on Saturday. and stay off your feet a little bit.

Signed up for the 5k Friday at the Expo!! A nice plus was that there was no active fee. So now, I'm all set for January, aside from the flight. They didn't have a lot of info on the race, aside from what has already been announced. I asked about the 5k course and they said that they are finalizing the map right now, and it should be released in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, that'll mean that the medal will be released as well. Took a couple pics of the medal. It's really nice. Similar in size to the other Disney medals. Now that Labor Day is over, it's time to count down to the Tink race! :rotfl:

Here's the pics of the laynard and the medal:

Sorry they're sideways. I fixed them in my picture file, but for some reason when imageshack is uploading them, they're still coming up sideways. I'll try to fix them today.

Thank you for posting them! I went 6.5 today and it went ok so I guess I'm halfway there! I wanted to finish in under 1:30 and did so by a nice margin (it's my first so no record breaking here, lol!) I'm so proud that a year after running the 5k I did twice as much and finished with a smile - well and sore joints!

Do you know how nice the discount is for park tickets? I may end up with an AP instead since I will be going twice.

I am coming out Thurs. morning, but I am originally from CA so I am going to visit family Thurs, hit the expo first thing Friday morning and then hit the parks. Probably doing a little park touring Sat but head back to the room early. Run Sunday morning then tour the parks after a shower. I am flying back home Monday morning.

ITA with this. You are at a good starting off point so I am sure you will be fine regardless of what you do. I was more on the conservative side and worried more about the distance then the pace and that ended up showing in my time at the Princess. I made my goal of "under 3:00" but I feel like if I worked on my pace more I could have done a lot better. This time I am hoping to do more speed work and finish in under 2:30, which is a pretty big difference, but I am pretty sure I can do it.

Congrats on your run!! It is always nice to make a goal.
The discount is okay. I got the 4 day park hopper for $189, which they say is $42 off. You can look up the different prices at Gettravel.com.

I have a question for those of you who are running both the Tink and Princess, what is your training plan and over all strategy? I am about 85% sure I am going to do the Princess again this year too so I can get my coast to coast medal :rolleyes1 I was thinking of following Galloways plan for time goals for the Tink but I am not sure what to do to maintain for the Princess?? I know the Princess has the Tink incorporated into the training but I am more looking for a PR for Tink and have more fun with the Princess so I want to follow the Tink plan first.

I think I'm only going to stay in a DL hotel the night before the race. My cousin, who is in the Coast Guard, lives on (the old) Los Angeles Air Force Station, so I'll probably stay with him Fri & Sun nights. I'm planning on flying in Friday and flying out Monday, but I haven't booked my tickets yet. (Gotta find out from my cousin which airport is easier for them to pick me up/drop me off!)

I say all this to ask if any other solo travelers wants to share a room? I would be willing to book the room, as I can get a military discount that's usually pretty good on Hilton, Mariott, or Sheraton family hotels. I haven't really priced any out yet, but I suppose I need to do that soon. :)

My park plan consists of using my 3-day military ticket ($99) and at least on Saturday, doing one of the 'backstage' tours (the longest one), as it looks to be very interesting. I went to DL for the first time ever this past July with my DH & DD, but this trip I'll be flying out solo just for the race.

If you're interested in sharing a hotel on Sat night, let me know (PM preferred, if you can). I will book the room whether I get a roomie or not - just offering the opportunity to save money to another solo traveler. :)

I'm on the downhill slope for the W&D Half in Oct. We'll see how long it takes me to recover from that one before I get back into training mode. Hopefully not too long!! :)

It all depends on how you do at the Tinkerbell...how you feel specifically. The spacing between the two give you a little time if you do need to recuperate, you will have some time for that. Since you really want to have fun at the Princess, I would just take it easy and I think that Hal Higdon's Novice plan would better fit that goal. You can definitely do the Coast to Coast and you will love the medal!! Considering the only change to the Princess again is the stone, it is a good addition to both of those!!

Either way, you will do great!! :)

Here's a picture I got of the medal:

It's really big and I love the lanyard color!
