Official So You Think You Can Dance Season 7 Thread

Where is everybody? Is there another thread I didn't see? There are definitely some front runners after tonights show. I won't post spoilers for those who haven't seen it yet.

Ummm...Alex was great tonight but "raise the bar", "best dancing seen on the SYTYCD stage ever".....no. Don't buy it. Yes he is awesome, yes they looked good tonight and yes Sonja's choreo was amazing but I do not think such blanket statements are accurate. I have seen many amazing performances on this show and that one isn't even in my top 5!!! :confused3

FWIW, it seems that anytime anything is performed to "Halleluia" (sp?) it is the "most amazing thing ever!!!". I think it is just more a case of people being moved by the song. But that is just my opinion. (Of course Lee Dewyse did give me chills singing it on Idol......)

This is only my second season watching. I missed last season because it seemed to happen right after season 5 ended. I don't know much about dance so I mainly go based on my feeling while watching it. I knew when I was watching Alex that it was something great. Just like when I was watching the blonde who was dancing with Aday ( sorry I don't know her name) that it wasn't great. I am so glad that this show is on again. I'm kicking myself for not watching the other seasons because I thought the idea was stupid :headache:

Alex was amazing last night and I do think he may be the best dancer they have had on the show. There have been many, many pieces I have loved but they were usually later in the season after the dancers have matured.

So my favorites after last night
Alex - a distant number 1
Kent - for his pure joy in dancing, he may win because he is just so darn cute
Jose - another one that just has such joy
Robert - really saw him dance for the first time last night and I thought he was really good

The ones I was less crazy about -
Lauren - technically amazing but not mature enough
Billy - I usually love him but was just so-so on the foot loose routine
Cristina - just has no star power to me
Adechike - Katherine was so amazing I barely watched him
Alexie - I thought this was the worst of the night, just kind of boring
Ashley - couldn't remember what she danced
Melinda - I really didn't like this - like th judges I couldn't figure out why - she just seemed awkward (with Pasha!)

The guys this year are amazing and I think one will win it. I am not sure how I feel about the all stars. I do like seeing them - but they are so good it can be distracting.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm fine with folks posting here and discussing live as soon as the show starts on the East Coast. I don't consider that spoilers, and I'm in the Pacific time zone.

If I don't want to know what happens until the show airs here, I know when to stay away from the thread.

Of course I've also been known to check in early so I can impress DD with my oh so astute predictions. ;)

Here are my super quick picks from last night:

Top 2
Alex
Robert

Bottom 2
Adechike
Melinda

Even though Alex is in my top 2 and that probably was one of my favorite Sonya Tayeh routines, I agree about the praise being a bot over the top; "a new standard" and "the best dance performed on any SYTYCD stage"? Come on!

Why did I think Dominik was going to be one of the All Star dancers??
I must have dreamed it............... :confused3

I've loved this show ever since the beginning even though I know absolutely zilch about dancing. It seemed as though, in the earlier years, we really got a mix of dancers with different styles, and they all had a chance to do well. This season and last, I feel like they're saying, "We'd love to have all contemporary, but I guess we need a token bboy, a token ballroom/salsa, token tapdancer, etc". I'm not trying to bash contemp, but is that all there is?

Second, it seems as though there's a blurring of the "professional" line. Yes, Alex is an absolutely exquisite dancer, but isn't he already a pro? What more can being on a show like this do for him? And how can you compare him to a Kent, who is so raw, but so happy? I dunno, but it seemed in the past to be a little more "scandalous" if the dancer had pro experience, vs now.

And does anyone else think bringing the all stars back was a marketing tool to sell more tickets for the tour? I've been to all the tours, and the last one was definitely the least crowded (and, for me, the least exciting). But if you tell me I can see Twitch and Aday and Mark again, I'll be buying tickets.

I still love it though, and think the boys will completely smoke the girls this year!

You didn't dream it. He is. But they have 12 all-stars and 11 (now 10) competitors so there's always going to be more than one of the all-stars absent from the performance episodes. He was in the non-elimination episode where everyone danced in their own styles.

I found last season so disappointing. I'm already into this season!!

I used the same term last night--she the "token tap dancer" :sad2:
DH and I were talking about it and we were saying remember how when the show started all the dancer struggled to learn the different styles and actually DO the dances? Now, they seem to have the dancing and steps down very well and it is all about "filling in the blanks" and putting your soul into the dance etc.

I agree with you about the professional stuff. The show is different and it has evolved. maybe it is for the best for the show itself and maybe this is what the producers want.

I'm not a fan of contemporary dance unless it really, really moves me. I like all the ballroom, salsa etc. more. So it seems to me that they favor the contemporary dancers. They've always said that when the ballroom types do their solos, dancing for their lives, that it doesn't serve them well--:( Well, what are you supposed to do?!

But it is fun and we enjoy watching.

Alexie - I thought this was the worst of the night, just kind of boring

Looks like you called the first elimination.

Of the bottom 3, I would have picked Melinda as 1st to go. I really think her days are numbered anyway. Nigel does love his tappers though.

Good point! I got a great deal on tickets for the last tour. I think folks bought them up, planning to get scalper prices for them, but ended up taking whatever they could get when the show didn't even sell out.

I really thought Melinda was going to be the first to go, I thought that before anyone even danced. There is something about her personality that makes her unlikeable to me and she is no where close to as talented as the other dancers.
I was sad that Alexie went home, her dance was just kind of plain but I am sure if she stayed in it that she would have rocked in other styles.

awwww....Kent is from Wapakoneta, Ohio! And Nigel lerned how to pronounce it too!

(I have known about Wapak my whole life, as I have cousins there)

Enjoyed last night, but I was confused by most of the judges comments. I felt like they were really harsh on the boys and seem to be talking up the girls to save them.

I thought Alex was amazing - as always - and they were just really hard on him. They were dancing the choreography given to them and I am not sure they are allowed to change it. I also though Billy was pretty good krumping and they were basically laughing at him.

I also though Melinda was stil pretty bad. She was slipping out of moves and had lousy extension yet they praised the heck out of her.

I also noticed that they were giving Melinda way more praise than she deserved. I know nothing about dancing but even I noticed that during some of her lifts her legs were really bent and awkward looking. I hope she goes home tonight. I almost fast forwarded through her last night.

IMO from the moment they revealed the top 11 they have been trying to kill Billy's chances of continuing. It was presented as if he was the last selected & therefore less worthy. Last week he was told to "dance like a man", yet he was portraying a HS character. This week he "drew" crumping AND I felt he did a credible job, especially up against the amazing abilities of Comfort in this genre. Oldest DD has been in hip hop class w/ Billy & knew he was very skilled at this. I did agree when they talked about the fact he needed more rebound. Great job IMO.

I thought the costumes hurt a few contestants, but that's definitely not their fault & should only be pointed out by the judges w/ that disclaimer. It's also not the dancers' fault if the choreography is lacking, misguided or whatever other critiques the judges give.

As is typical, the shoe started to drop last night about some of the real dance experience of the dancers. Our salsa & b-boy dancers get praised like mad for their performances in light of their lack of experience. Disingenuous and completely beyond merit IMO.

The domestic violence hip hop w/ Lauren? & Dominic last night was a surprise. Both dancers took several minutes to even show a glimmer of coming out of the attitudes they put on to do the #. Very deep.

Overall I'm having a hard time watching most of the competitors because the All Stars are so above & beyond, particularly Lauren, Courtney, Mark!! and Allison. I know Twitch & Neil have this same level of talent.

Not loving this new format. I think this is the 2nd season where one of my fav shows is being destroyed by the producers.
