OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

My wife and I now have bib numbers! This just makes it all the more real.

Well, I guess I have to start training now...
(Kidding! I'm kidding! I've been training for at least 6 days now!)
(Kidding! Again, I'm kidding!)

We're in the 44500 range for the Half. This is our first half marathon. How many corrals are there, and any guesses as to which might be ours?

Doug

I just downloaded my waiver. I am running the relay and will be the first leg. My prior best 1/2 marathon time was 2:07 and I have number 70445. That is not a typo....:confused3. Can anyone else share their relay number or make any sense of this?

Did you see that relay numbers start at 70,000?

21162 for Goofy.

That time is based off of a 1:54 half.

Last year, a 53 minute 10k (roughly 1:58 half, per McMillan), put me in B for the Half, D for the Full.

I'm sure corrals change based on the number of runners, proof of time, etc., but if nothing else, I wouldn't expect to be seeded any farther back than last year.

Not much info, but it may help establish some sort of baseline.

Or, it could lead to mass speculation, shattered dreams, and overall feelings of misery. One or the other.

:rotfl2: I love it! :lmao:

Or maybe both simultaneously?

< Registered Today for the 1/2

Not quite sure yet what prompted me to do it so it'll make 1/2 race 4 of 5 for the "year" (did DLR/Wine n Dine/Space Coast now WDW and Princess) which I won't admit how much I've spent on races in 2011. Now to get back to real race training..

I'm Goofy bib # 20365 based on a submitted time of a 1:45 half marathon which seemed to translate (very generously) to a projected full marathon finish of 3:30.

I didn't say I would finish in 3:30 but in October I submitted updated proof of time as 1:45 for a half and 3:43 for a full. The confirmation I received back from the "Track Shack" people indicated a projected marathon finish of 3:30 based on the 1:45 half proof time submitted.

Doesn't seem totally right but when they are placing thousands of people in corals maybe they're just trying to get people roughly grouped rather than precisely projecting everyone's finish time.

It's getting closer......

Well, now I am depressed. My number for the marathon WAS in the 1200s. I WAS so proud of that, but my Physical Therapist ruled me out for the full yesterday afternoon. Some nasty shin splints that came out of nowhere. I was so careful with my training this year. Started off slowly in july and built up to a good base. Sigh.

Now my next question is, my PT said that there is an outside chance that I could make it through a 1/2, if I can run up to 6 miles without alot of pain by the end of the year. I think that MAY be possible. So, is it possible to transfer my full registration to half? I emailed Active about this, but am afraid it will just go to the email wasteland. Any other ideas on who I can contact?

TIA

Hi LumberDad!

Looks like I'll probably be in the same corrals as you. My Goofy bib number is 24282.

Cool!

What is your projected finish time?

I hope to finish between 4 - 4:15 for the full. Going to try and the it wasy on the 1/2.

Yikes! I am so sorry to hear that you can't run the Full. But probably wise to follow the advice of your PT. you might send an email to disneysports@trackshack.com and see if they respond. I sent them an email this week and got a response in two days.

Have you tried KT Tape? I am fighting with an ankle injury and I got taped at an expo last weekend and it really helped. They have some amazing success stories, too.

Not that fast!!! It was based on my 2:14 finish at the 2010 Wine and Dine Half. Since then I've had some issues with my foot and leg due to an antibiotic I took for sinusitis which led to tendonitis. Hoping for 2 :30-2:45 on the half and 5:00-5:30 on the full.

Thanks for the tip. I emailed them and they responded in less than 30 minutes! Unfortunately, it was not the news I wanted, and I cannot transfer over to the 1/2. Sigh. So my options are to cancel, and hold a place in next years race, which I probably will not have the time to train for, or to just go and pick up my goodie bag and at least get a shirt out of my $160 registration fee. Who would have thought I would have ever been depressed about not running 26 miles...

Have you tried calling? The half is still open (barely)so I don't understand why they wouldn't let you switch it over to an open race when others can still register outright? Seems pretty silly, but then again, I am applying logic to the situation. The phone number on the espnwwos site is 407.938.3398. I believe I had read about others doing this in the Wine & Dine (switching from the 1/2 to the 1/2 relay).

It couldn't hurt. And I am sorry to hear that you won't be able to run the full after putting in all that work. :(

Really sorry to read about your situation. I can understand your disappointment regarding the orders from your PT to not run the full but did you ask about and/or would you consider walking the full. My orthopedic surgeon told me he did not want me running a half/full marathon so I simply walk them. I realize my walking is no way as fast as running but even with bad knees I did achieve a PR in my latest half with a 2:11:12.

With your corral placement being way up front you would have plenty of time to complete the Full.

Hope you heal quickly.

I have thought about this option, and am on the fence about it. I have such a competitive nature when it comes to running, that I am not sure how I would feel about completing the 26.2 miles when I am not going at the pace I know I could be going. Strange I know, but somehow I feel I would be cheating to get my first medal. I always pictured myself running across the finish line and earning my medal based on my training for the past 6 months. By not running at my usual pace, I kind of feel like the medal would not mean as much to me...

I recently heard a story from a runner who walked Goofy due to an injury. She said that the full was the hardest race she'd ever completed, because when she reached the time on the clock that was her existing marathon PR (I want to say it was 4-ish hours), she realized that she still had 2.5 hours still to go and went to a dark mental place for a while. So the medal was just as meaningful for her, but way more difficult than she'd imagined.

I'd look into run/walking at maybe a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio if it were me, before writing it off. Or getting someone on the phone as others have suggested to make one more plea to transfer to the half.

I've also heard of selling your registration. I'm not sure of the logistics behind it but it might mean you could at least recoup some of the cost? :confused3
