OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Be careful about that. I do not believe Disney allows the selling of your registration/bib # and if they figure out you did it, you might be banned from future participation in their races.

In case any Goofy runners are interested, here is the reply I got from RunDisney about the bibs and corral placement:

The race bib is a Tyvek bib similar to bibs we have used in the past.

After the half marathon, if you feel your bib is not in good enough
shape for the Marathon, you can visit Runner Relations at the Expo
during Expo hours and they can re-assign your bib number for the
Marathon. It is your responsibility to ensure B-tag on the back of the
bib is not bent or broken so it can record your time for both the half
marathon and marathon.

The Goofy participants will be assigned the same corral for both days
and 1 corral letter will be listed on your bib number.

Thanks,
RunDisney

Thanks for posting this information! It's nice to know there is an option to get a new bib if needed, but kind of annoyed we'll have to go back to the expo to get one. I'll have to really baby my bib this time... The single corral placement is interesting. I wonder if they are placing runners in the corral that they would be fallen in for the half, or the corral that they would have assigned us for the full.

I just found the following on carbo loading from Dec 2008 . . . any thoughts on this??? Dave

"I now realize that I just didn't know squat about carbo loading all those years, because the real secret wasn't discovered until 2002 and I didn't hear about it until last year.

This study by the University of Western Australia, which reads more like a science experiment than a running how-to article, proved you can increase the impact of carbo loading on glycogen levels as much as 90 percent. Then I validated the experiment at the last LA Marathon.

Here's what you do.

Eat lightly and normally the week before the marathon.
The day before your marathon, do a 3 minute, very-high-intensity speed workout in the morning. For me, that meant running two-plus all-out laps at the track, leaving me gasping for breath and really feeling the burn.
Consume 12 grams of carbs for every kilo of lean body mass spread over the next 24 hours. That's a HUGE amount of carbs. For my 150 pound body, that meant buying four 18-ounce cans of ABB Carboforce at 24 Hour Fitness and nursing them down during the course of the day (ten 12-ounce bottles of new Gatorade Carbohydrate Energy Formula would work as well).
If you wade through the study, you'll find the science of it is that your body responds to the all-out workout by getting ready to handle this stress again, i.e., it loads a ton of glycogen into your muscles. Yet the short duration of the workout means it has no impact on your readiness for the race the next day. And Carboforce isn't bad: it tastes like a really syrupy version of Gatorade.

While I must admit to feeling a little bit bloated at the starting line, I breezed past the free cellphone call area coming into downtown LA, where I had hit the wall in 2007, and felt strong all the way to the finish. My time was 23 minutes faster overall, and most of the improvement was in the last 5 miles, thanks to not hitting the wall. "

I think carb loading and any nutrition is VERY, VERY individual. My body HATES carbs, and craves protein. I usually protein load the week before a race.

Eight miles this morning. Temps were in the teens. I stuck with the treadmill. It's boring, but I hope it's the wiser choice.

I hope everyone having a great run this weekend!

I got in my last long bicycle ride of 104 miles yesterday and 10 miles walking this morning. A couple more bike rides this week then walking my long 20/22 miler in 2 weeks. Should be set for 2012 Goofy.

Yesterday DW entered me in the March 25th Gator 5K, 56 mile bike and 13.1 miler Duathlon. Fun times in 2012!

Had a disasterous Thursday one hour run. Don't know what was wrong but it tanked and tanked bad. Today it was much better - a 11 mile long run this afternoon - temperature in the high 40's. By the second mile, I was shedding my sweatshirt and ran in just a tshirt and long pants. Stayed to a 13.45/mile pace which for me, is great. The last mile was rough and the tops of my feet hurt to the point I had to stop and losen the laces. For the first time, I'm seeing light at the end of this tunnel - I may actually complete this half within the allowed time. I'm still scared of the sweepers and of course, injuries that would sideline me.

For the first time I used music on my iphone and RunKeeper at the same time. Had a tough time with it - I had it zipped in my pants pocket but RunKeeper kept pausing. Then I'd have to stop or slow down to fiddle with it to resume it. I must have done this about a dozen times. I just ordered a spibelt - hopefully the iphone can stay in there with more stability.

Where exactly do all of you put your things - phone, shot bloks, sport beans, tissue, chapstick, WATER, etc.? Woman's running clothing don't seem to have many pockets if any at all. Will this spibelt take care of all this (except the water)?

mickeysgal, great recovery from a lousy run. Don't fear the sweeper! Your pace is solid!

The SPIbelt is the perfect size, but I struggle to get the phone in and out. I use the remote on the earbuds to start/stop music and make and take calls. It would be frustrating/impossible without it. I tried an armband, too. Too tight.

The other thing I struggle with is the plug on the earbuds is straight and the jack is on the top of the phone. It creates a lot of pressure on the wire. I've had some earbuds quit and I blame the 180 degree turn it has to make. I finally found a 4-pole right angle cable. The extra controls require the 4-pole and it's hard to find.

I don't use runKeeper, but having it stop would be annoying.

I used a single SPIBelt for the half and it held my phone and several gels, no problem. This year I'm doing the full and got a double SPIBelt. I'll be out there a long time ; )

Good luck this week!

Ronda

Does anyone know if the monorail will be open early for the race (We're staying at Contempo)?

I've been running five days a week and the last two I had to cut it down to four. I've just been feeling tired and my legs get sore with all this increased mileage. I'll be so happy after this Saturday when my last longgg run is over!

I actually bought guy shorts bc of the pockets!! Congrats! You did a great job!

I ran a winter series 15k race today in 24 degrees which was really tough on my asthma. Although this was only my second 15k race and I shaved 2:43 minutes off the first one, I was still a bit disheartened bc I think I was last. I know it was the uber runners and me, but it still is tough. I did it in 1:47. They started the 5k at the same time/place though and I know I was far from last for that which makes me feel a bit better.

Yes, the monorail will be running early. We'll be at the Poly and riding the rails with you!

Congrats! You did great! Do not worry about the sweepers because your training time is very good. I had approx. the same pace as you during training and ran my 1st half marathon in September in under 3 hours. You'll see that you'll even be a little faster during the race. Just watch your pace at the beginning so you don't fool yourself into going faster like the others. Had I taken it slower at the beginning, my time would have been much better. Also, make sure you only stop if you really need to (bathroom breaks- try stopping later rather than when it'S busier at the 1st few miles, choose the characters that you want pictures with wisely, etc...) As for where I put things: ipod in an armband, 2 spibelts (1 for my phone and kleenex/ the other for bars or chews) and I have a 4 bottle fuel belt. Seems like a lot but I don't like depending on anyone for stuff so I make sure that I am prepared! I probably will only bring 2 bottles instead of 4 since I've heard that Disney has more than enough water stations. I also have a playlist set up just for races with music that I know is going to keep me moving :)
Stay positive, you'll do great!!!

Way to go everyone...keep it up! Nice 10-mile run yesterday with DH (we usually have to run separately because of the kiddos). Ended up with an 8:49/mile pace, so hopefully we are on track to hit our goal to run the relay in under 4 hours. I do have a question for the experts. If I take the monorail from Epcot after DH starts, can I go from the TTC to the Poly to hang out for a little while and then to the relay start point? I was thinking I could either take the monorail back to the TTC and walk to the start or even just walk from the Poly? I would just like somewhere inside to relax and pass the time but obviously don't want to be late for the start or get stuck at the Poly.

Based on the race instructions mentioning taking the monorail to TTC I think Disney understands many relay runners will not ride the bus at 5AM to the MK parking lot and wait for their runner there. The following link is from the main building of the Poly to the really point. There is a cross walk that enters the MK parking lot through a personnel gate. I am sure that Disney will actually have a cross walk guard given he likelihood that the cross walk will see heavy use.

I would plan on scoping this out Friday, though if you do, please honor the workers restrictions on entry. While raising tents seems harmless, it is a construction site and they need room to work as well as keep you safe.

I am sure you know, but for those who may not.....

You can avoid one of the trains and walk from the Poly to the TTC. Short quarter mile walk.

The last mile was rough and the tops of my feet hurt to the point I had to stop and losen the laces.

Runnersworld had an article on custom shoe lacing schemes. I had a painful spot and now skip a few eyelets on my shoes. With the adrenalin of race day you can really over tighten the laces.

I use Raceready shorts for all the pockets provided. It's a direct to customer company. Pay special attention to their sizing. I wear large in most all other brands; I need XL in Raceready.

Everyone has bad days. Sometimes three miles feels bad. The taper should make everything good.

Thanks! Unfortunately, we aren't arriving until Sat just in time to make it to the Expo. I may just have to take my chances that I don't get lost!
