Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Ok all you experienced runners I need help!

I was diagnosed with cancer last fall had surgery and radiation that was completed earlier this year my family and friends have put together "Team Ashley" and we are running the TOT in support of Young Adult Cancer Awareness. I got the all clear from my doctors in July to start training and things have been progressing well....slow..but well. We are going to do run/walks and are averaging a 13:40/mile.

Well this weekend was suppose to be an 11 miler on Saturday then the tapering begins. I woke up this morning with a sore throat/fever....seems to be just a head cold and as luck has it I'm off work today/tomorrow so I can rest up.

However, should I still trying doing the long run and just take it slow or scale it back? I was never a runner before so I have no clue if I should just push through or call it a loss and move on?

Thanks guys!

Thanks - I think I am just so nervous about cutting things back so close and then losing all that I've been working on :) We did 10.5 a week ago....I was so excited upon completion - my poor husband keeps teasing me about how I am now "such a runner" (something I never thought I would be)

See you all soon!!

That's a tough one. I believe the line of thinking is, if congestion is in your head it's okay to workout. If you have any symptoms in your chest, you should lay low. Maybe you could get your long run in Sunday or Monday.:confused3 I was sick in 2009 for the Princess half. I came all that way and wanted that pretty medal. It was not the best time, but I finished.

Thank you so much for all of the encouragement from other run/walkers and walkers. I am feeling so much better about the race now and finally feel excited instead of dread about being all alone walking while everyone zooms by :).

I'm hoping that I'll also have an advantage in finishing in that I've been training at around 7,000ft. Hopefully, the altitude shift makes me move a little faster, though I don't know how true that is.

Thanks again. I am so sorry to others suffering from injuries that are hindering their training. This as been a painful, and frustrating summer so I'm excited to participate in something active and festive..and Disney!

I've seen a lot of IT Band related posts and this showed up in my inbox the other day. Hope it helps!

:thumbsup2 I saw that the other day, too - it's a great video! I'm doing all of those things, so I'm hopeful it'll end eventually, but likely not in time for this race. So I need a plan!

First, congrats on your comeback! Second, my thought is that you don't need the 11 mile distance. As DisneyRunner2009 mentioned, whether or not you try at all depends on just what's going on - don't even think about it with a chest cold. Trust me, I've made that mistake before. Head cold? No fever? Feeling crummy but not like roadkill? Run as much as feels comfortable. But if you've got chest congestion or a fever, or have no energy at all, I'd skip it in favor of rest and recuperation.

I'm hoping that I'll also have an advantage in finishing in that I've been training at around 7,000ft. Hopefully, the altitude shift makes me move a little faster, though I don't know how true that is.
Oh, I'm betting you'll be MUCH faster than you think! I train at or within about 75 feet of sea level and I couldn't believe how much harder it was to train in the NC mountains (we were about 3500-4500 feet) for a week on vacation. When I came back to sea level, it felt much, much easier and my speed increased immediately. :thumbsup2

That is such a great attitude - thank YOU!

All I seem to be reading about is the TOT 10 mile run. Is anyone doing the 5K and are you wearing costumes?

I can't believe I decided to work on a third costume for the TOT weekend (1 for 5K, 1 for 10-miler and one for MNSSHP).

We are doing both but we are not wearing costumes, but them again, we aren't big costume people. We will be wearing our matching WDW 2012 shirts though.

Can someone tell me if I am allowed to pack my sportchews in my carry on luggage? I have never had to carry them before so I have no clue :confused3
I am not checking a bag this trip so I wasnt sure if I could bring them with me or if I would have to buy some from the Expo.

I'm sure there are a bunch of folks on this thread running the 5k as well as the 10 miler, but you might find more info on just the 5k in particular on this thread. I'm certain there will be tons of 5k runners in costume though! Are you planning to dress up? :)

I wouldn't think chews would be a problem...I've had packets of sports beans in my carry on before and never had a problem. However, Gels/Gu's/Shots I always put in the clear plastic baggie outside of my carry on for x-ray or inspection. I would bring them...you never know if you're going to be able to find what you need or are used to at the expo.

Is anyone going to this race solo? Spots have been released through Active and I am so tempted, but my DD running buddy can't go due to work. :confused3

This isn't ToT race related, but I started reading this book called Ultra Marathon Man by Dan Karnazes. I am not particularly far in it (100 pqges out of about 300) but I feel like I can really relate to how he feels and what he says. If anyone is looking for a decent read while on vacation I suggest this. Also Born to Run is a good motivational read I didnt take the barefoot running totally to heart, I'm sure there are benefits but I can't justify running that far in 5 fingers (or something similar).

You've all been training hard for this! Everyone is gonna do awesome, everyone here has worked too hard to not complete what they've set out to accomplish. Whether that be the 5k, 10 miler or both of them on the same day. Just over two weeks until you all will be at the happiest place on earth, of all things running!

Woo-HOO! :cool1: Amen! :goodvibes

I ma doing both the ToT 10M and the 5K. I am wearing my typical Disney 5K "costume". Orange shorts, fuchsia tuxedo shirt and a bow tie. :thumbsup2 I am the height of fashion. :rotfl:

Solo sort of for me too. Meeting up with a couple friends (one from Colorado, one from Massachusetts) we all have different paces, but will be there to support each other, sort of like the WISH folks.:grouphug:

Going out for my last long training run. It's 46 degrees here. I'm wearing tights and a long sleeve jacket. My right knee feels like it was smashed with a hammer. I've had this symptom before.
