Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

And then came the rain! Hoping for a long run this morning - rained out so far. It is torrential rain and so windy. If it settles down to a drizzle I will go.

You're so right - it absolutely poured this morning and the wind was very intense! There's a deliciously cool breeze blowing this evening - should be a good run tomorrow :simba:

Happy long runs, everyone! :grouphug:

No run for me this morning . DH and I did an 8-miler on Wednesday, and I woke up thursday thinking that my 2nd toe on my right foot somehow got bruised :confused3. After working and being on my feet for the next 2 days, I looked at the toenail, clipped it some, then noticed a blister??? Under the toenail??? So...I nicked at it with the clippers and lo and behold....yup...blister! How, pray tell, does one get a BLISTER UNDER A TOENAIL???? Shoes not new (or old). Socks either. Route I took normal. Distance a little farther than normal, but not by much. I've got it neosporin'ed and band-aided up, and hope to be able to get back out there monday. :hyper:

Hi all!

Been reading and not posting for quite some time now. :) I've been following the Galloway plan for this run, which will be my first 10-miler (and first Disney race). The 10K I did last month was my first race ever, so this is pretty exciting stuff for me.

I had an absolutely disastrous run a week ago - I was slated to do 10 and only made it 5.6 before slamming into the wall. :faint: I was underfed, underhydrated, and it was ridiculously humid. I got pretty down on myself for a day or two, but runner friends (and others!) told me it's all par for the course. Now I look at it as a rite of passage. :) I got back in last week, taking longer midweek runs, but not crazy long - 4 on Monday night and 6.2 on Wednesday night. Did 3 tonight, and now I'm trying not to overthink next weekend's 11! The course I follow here has more elevation than we'll have at the event, so I'm hoping that means I'll be able to pick up the pace just a smidge on race night.

I'm not going costume crazy my first time out here because I don't know how well I'd do with a lot of stuff. So I'm going for deconstructed Maleficent - lime green run top, purple sparkly skirt, and black accents. It's in the spirit, right? ;)

We'll be at BW that weekend, and I'm psyched we can walk to the start - the transportation has me more nervous than the race! :) We have dinner reservations at Il Mulino (with friends) at 5pm. Gotta figure out the best plan of action for that meal still, but I think I'm getting the hang of it now that I've been doing my training runs in the evening.

Tonight was glorious - mid-60s after being crazy humid and in the 90s the past several days. And all it took was a tornado coming through to cool us off. :scared1:

Home stretch!

I had a good run tonight, I went a full 7 miles. Not bad for a slacker such as myself. I have been slacking really bad and just started my training about 2 weeks ago :sad2: I know I have alot of catching up to do. I ran faithfully all last year but just havent been in the spirit of things this year. It wasnt untill I realized how close it was to the run that I figured I better get my butt in gear.
I learned once again how amazing the body can be as I just did 7 miles on my 6th run.

I'm quoting my trainer here after the initial shock of my first 'black toe'..." welcome to the world of distance running." :) it is a blister under your nail caused from the force of all the repeated pressure from every step of your run. Awesome, huh? A lot of people say it may be that your shoes are too small, but it's not always the case. In my case, the second toe on both of my feet bruised during my first half marathon...and never again. For others, it seems to be chronic. It was uncomfortable for about a day or two, but after that it didn't feel any different than my other toes. Here's the scary part (at least for me)...if its bad, you may eventually lose your toenail, but it'll grow back! Luckily, I did not, but I'm told it's quite common. I say, slip on some flip flops and flaunt it as a runner's badge of honor!

By the way....it's 64 degrees right outside my door...the reason I waited to do my long run this morning. I need a tissue...I'm tearing up over here!

Been lucky enough to avoid runners toe since I started but maybe because I tend to land towards the back of my foot and roll it forward towards the toes? Would explain why my heels tend to get so be the sorest part of any run!

I was up at 5 worked at an outdoor market until noon (torrential winds and rain blew over like everything). I was worried I wouldn't get the run in! But...at 3 I got out the door no rain in site but a little windy. Overall temperature wise was perfect (still sweated up a storm, or as I like to say made some fat cry ;))

Happy running to everyone who has their long runs this weekend!

I decided to do my 10 mile pre-ToT night training last night. Glad I did because we just had some serious rain and more coming.

Temperature at 10:00PM here in Fl. last night was 81F and humidity was 79%, not the best. Had a late dinner at 4:30-Caesar salad, baked potato, onion crusted Salmon and two glasses of Merlot.

Since I bicycled 55 miles yesterday morning I took things easy with a combination of rotations of one mile walk then one mile jog with walks at 10:30mpm average and jogs at 10:10mpm average. Too hot and late in the day to go any harder.

Dinner did not cause a problem so I'm good to go there, can handle whatever the weather brings and have a couple of weeks to get times into the low 9:00mpm range.

Good luck training and think....it WILL get cooler!!!!

Labor Day I did 12.5 miles. Not a fabulous run but not terrible. This weekend was a 3 mile run with a Magic Mile. I shocked myself by running an 8:52 minute mile! I'm very pleased. Since I started the Galloway e-coaching in June, my Magic Mile has improved from 9:39 to 8:52. ToT will be more of a training run for me because I have a local half marathon the following weekend. And my target race is really the Goofy. I think I can PR my half marathon but we'll see how things go... I'm overall pleased with my training and feel really positive.
Just keep swimming! 3 weeks from today we'll all be wearing our shiny new medals around!!!

Amanda-8:52, way to go!

Just finished my 3 miles today with magic mile. Today's magic mile was my fastest yet! And it was the 3rd time I ran a mile straight without walk breaks.

Ok, glad it's not just me! I did my first 1/2 toenail-pain free, so that's why I was thinking this was odd. And I'd already gone up a 1/2 size last time I bought a pair as I could feel toes hitting the end of the shoe by the end of the run. Fortunately, I've got the remnants of a pedicure still hiding the nail so it doesn't look too bad!! And let me tell ya, yesterday it was either flip-flops or Tevas all day. Today, I think I'm going to slip in an Insanity DVD and see if I can tolerate shoes, then hit the road again tomorrow!

I'm working out transportation details ... have a question.

I've read a lot about the bus transportation to/from the host resorts. What about boats? Will the Friendship Boats be running? Staying at the Swan, and can hop on/off over at the Boardwalk.

:upsidedow

3 questions-

1. Where do you keep your camera while running? I always run with a bottle of water so I don't want to hold it in my hand. (I know there are water stations but I have always had water on my runs and like to be able to sip when needed) I will have a sparkle skirt so I think I can keep my gels in the pocket on the waistband. Just not sure where to keep camera? Maybe tuck it in the shoulder strap of sports bra or something?

2. Is there usually music playing along the course at the runs? I am wondering if I should use my ipod. I have done some runs with and some without. If there is music at least once in awhile I can do without.

3. For those who are in corral C, what was the time that you submitted?

Thanks!

I have a Spibelt and stow my Iphone in there. That's what I use for a camera and Ipod. I do use an Ipod - sometimes - during the course of a race. Usually I'm too entertained by the provided entertainment and the general road-side supporters and their creative signs to use the ipod the entire time. For quiet segments of the race, I do usually put in one earphone for distraction. I also do have my RunKeeper running to let me know how I'm doing. Yes, for the Disney races I've run to date, there is music periodically by Disney, marching bands, etc.

I have had this happen twice. The last time was after the Wine and Dine last year. I did in face lose my nail and it took almost 10 months for it to grow back. :crazy2:

Hi, Liz,

Your friends are right about the failed run; we all have them. Sounds like you are doing just fine with your mpw average anyway. Enjoy your first Disney race!

BTW, the costume sounds perfect. It is best to keep it simple until you see how you like running in a costume. I saw a crazy amount of discarded tutus and costume pieces at about mile 5 at my first Disney Princess half. I'm running in a modified Minnie costume: purple ears with a green bow, a black shirt and purple skirt.

Super excited!! DS8 and I did the Glo-Run last night and he loved it so much he asked to so the 5K Happy Haunted Trail Run! So DH, DS, and I will be doing that as well as the 10-miler!

After the DL 1/2 last weekend, I think I'm back on taper for the TOT. I did a 3 mi hill-run this week to get back in the groove and then did 8 painfully hot and humid miles on Saturday. If only I had known how cool it would be this morning! Of course it was warm and sunny again by 2PM. However, when I looked at the WDW weather tonight at 10PM, it was 77oF and 92% humidity-- gosh I hope it isn't like that in 3 weeks! I may do 9-10mi next weekend, but after that I'll be down to 6 or less again.

My 2nd toes are longer than my big toes, and as my shoes were getting older, I had a long run where I bruised under my toenails-- they looked all black, but I had them drained (just at home with a sterilized pin). The nail turned all white, but it didn't fall off--it just grew out slowly (making it easy to cover up with nail polish). I haven't had trouble since I got new shoes-- next time I won't push it so long to get a new pair. My goal is that they will be all better by my brother's wedding cruise in January-- that'd be about 9 months or so.

I'm surprised that they TOT is only half or 2/3 as big as the Princess-- I hope the Expo is just as good. I'll be disappointed if it is small and crappy. I guess I'll wait to see the final race information packet.

I'm thinking this might happen....the nail feels awfully wiggly. How long until it fell off? I'm just thinking I need to get out there running and Ned this thing to hurry it up already and heal!
