Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

You know, poohbear, reading your account of your race sooooo reminds me of why I didn't sign up for a 10k for time. I know this sounds crazy, but before I ever sign up for a local race, I always read last year's results just to make sure I can hang and not finish last. I'm ok with near the last, just not really last. It seems like around here, the 10k distance is only for "serious" athletes. There is a wide range of finishing times for 5k's and half marathons, but for some reason, 10k's are completely different. In looking at last year's times for all of the 10k's I considered, not only would I have finished dead last, but by at least 15 minutes in some cases. So, I'll just take whatever corral placement Disney wants me to have, train my heart out, and let the chips fall where they may.

I'm just worried that 10 miles will kill me now.:confused3
Aw, poohbear, I'm so sorry it wasn't a fun race! I'll echo Cripey, though - be PROUD of yourself for finishing! :thumbsup2 Not everyone can say that. I also think it sounds like maybe you went out faster than you're used to and in hot weather, there's just no way to come back from that. This I know from first-hand experience. Stick to the plan, stick to the plan, stick to the plan. At least until the halfway mark - then you can decide if you feel up to pushing it some. My first "real" 5K race (on my own, not slowing down to stay with my son), it was hard, watching people whiz by me as I stuck to my intervals. But guess what? With a mile left, I started passing a lot of them because I still had plenty of gas left in the tank.

Ugh, and hot water?? YUCK! That was an issue at this year's Expedition Everest Challenge too...the water during the race and post-race Powerade was all hot...gross.
:rotfl: Yep, I had the same thought when I read poohbear's comments! Yuck - hot water when you're hot and thirsty is like pouring salt in a wound.

I think my biggest problem is my mental block, the thought of running 5 miles makes me feel anxious for some reason. I don't even know why, I know I can do it physically.
Hi Rachel! Funny - 5 miles was a HUGE mental block for me, too. I have no idea why, either! I got past it by skipping it: I planned one long run as 4.9 and the next as 5.1. Silly, but it worked!

I know this sounds crazy, but before I ever sign up for a local race, I always read last year's results just to make sure I can hang and not finish last.
Oh, I know that kind of "crazy", lol! Yep, I do the same. Just did it for a local half I'm considering, in fact. ;):thumbsup2

I know I saw this info somewhere on the race details but can't locate it now that I'm looking for it.

What are the time limits needed in a race that you want to sumbit to RunDisney for coral selection?

I am aiming to do a half marathon at the end of the summer in my hometown and will hopefully finish under 3hrs. My long runs have been in the 12-13 min/mile pace so far.

Thanks!

Thank you guys for the support! I didn't look at last year's times until the night before the race, which was a BAD idea! This race was more for the serious runners vs. the beginning runners like they advertised. Though I wasn't last, I bet there were less than 20 behind me. I did stay to cheer a lady I just met on, who had done a Disney event before. I passed her going back and told her I would be there.

So, if I plan on keeping with the intervals and they are still at the 1:1 ratio...do you REALLY start walking 1 minute in?:confused3 Ideally, I'd like my ratios to be higher, but I don't know if I can do that or not.

And yes, the hot water was like pouring salt on an open wound. Thankfully, my loving DH ran to the truck to get my ice cold recovery shake while I waited for the Disney runner to finish. It never tasted so good!!

For those who are just starting out...keep training. You can do this! I was in Disney in January when I saw the marathon people and decided I really wanted to Run Disney. DH told me he would fly me back in Feb, so I went home and trained using c25k in 6 weeks and ran my first 5k. There are different training programs, check them out and go with what works! I always loved the "idea" of being a runner and now I can say I AM! :thumbsup2 You can do it!!:woohoo:

I've found that in my local races there are fewer "beginners" or slower runners than at Disney. It was very disconcerting for me because my first race ever was a Disney race and I was not way in the back. In my first local race I was WAY in the back. :lmao: And I was the only one doing run/walk intervals. (Except I met another runner early in the race who was injured and considering dropping out until he saw me doing intervals. He was super nice and we ran/walked together for the rest of the race.)

I had a cut-back week this weekend. I did 3.77 miles, including a new best Magic Mile time - 9:22! I can't even believe it!

I have a potential costume for ToT, although I may save it for January's Half. Or I might wear it twice. I bought a bright green Sparkle Skirt with green compression calf sleeve, a purple sports bra, and I'll wear a white shirt on top. The skirt is perfect for a mermaid and my youngest son swears that he's going to marry Ariel. :rotfl:

Just so everyone knows, we received an email today with additional info and the iGift bag! There is really nothing to get too excited over, but it means we are getting close! I know it goes to spam for many people, so i figured I'd mention it.

I got it too. Made me remember that I have to do my Disney dining reservations for our entire trip. With Food & Wine starting, the restaurants will be crowded.

I got the email but I didn't realize the igift bag was in there. I can't see it from my phone and I'm too tired to turn on my laptop so I'll check it out later. I am getting really excited. I've put in so much work for this, like we all have. I'm still not completely safe from the sweepers but I'm getting faster every week and I truly think I'll be ready.

I finally got a run in this evening!! 4 miles!! I'm back on track :woohoo: And feeling good!!

I got an email but I didn't see anything about and igift bag....
what was it?
going to have to look for that email again.

is anyone wearing anything special for the ToT run?
a small little costume or something?
Me and my three friends are trying to figure out what to do, I am not use to running with anything other then my regular running clothes.
Whats everyone else doing?

Some are doing costumes, some are not, and some, like me aren't sure what they are doing. :lmao: I ran the Royal 5k as Rapunzel, but haven't decided yet if I want to mess with a costume. I think I will, but am not sure what.

I love the mermaid idea! :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 For sure - that sounds like swelling beyond what's to be expected with heat and exertion - better to get a handle on it than risk anything worse, right?

I went ahead and went in.. she put me back on a dose that is about 1/4 what I was taking. She thinks my insulin levels are getting up to high and staying up to high. I really do not understand what all that has to do with the edema... but if it makes it so I can run more easily :thumbsup2

going to have to look for that email again.

The link was on the side. I almost missed it too. Really, only a couple things were interesting to me.... one a free commemorative poster that you get a voucher for to be picked up at the expo..and then a cliff bar training pack that you have to sign up for...

I didn't get the email...same thing happened with the Tinker Bell half...never got any of those either, but got all of the ones for Expedition Everest....and it's the same email address. Checked the junk folder and nothing there either. I don't get it :confused3

Thank you I will go look through it again ;)

I also did not get an e-mail. Although I've gotten my registration e-mails for this, tink, and princess.

Is anyone doing the 5k in the morning as well as the 10 miler at night? I'm trying to see if it would be too much. I"ve recruited a running friend to go with me so I don't have to go alone, but since the TOT is full, I figured I would recruit her to go to the 5k.

That's exactly how I feel, NOW. Last week, I wasn't so sure. I'm traveling with friends for a 10 day vacation and signed up for this race after we booked the vacation. I was getting worried about the whole race - finishing, injuries, good hydration and nutrition before the race, etc.
Then my friend told me "it's ok if you take the whole night to finish. it's ok if you don't finish. it's ok if you don't even run the race. what you're doing to get ready for it is enough." :cheer2:
She's proud of me for all the training i've done and made me realize that getting up off the couch and going for all these runs is worth the effort. It took off all the pressure. This is getting easier and my pace is getting faster. Even if I don't get my happy ending, the journey is worthwhile.

Yes! For real. Every race I've done, I stuck to my intervals from the start: I did :30/:30 for the Tangled 5K, :45/:30 for a local 5K in March, 1:00/:35 for a local 5K in April, and 1:00/:30 for the Everest Challenge in May.

I do't either, but my mom's a nurse and insists there's a connection, lol! Glad you got it looked at. :thumbsup2

This is so true! :goodvibes
