Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

I am from Central Canada and I am making this a solo vacation.
Looking forward to some down time.

Training is going slow this time, but its going.

We are coming from Nashville, TN and arriving Friday and leaving the following Friday.

Training is going very slow...well not really going at all. I'm debating between just walking away from the 10 miler and just doing the 5k or doing the 10 miler and just get swept after a couple miles. Due to the heat, injury and just my own lack of motivation because of the previous 2, I haven't gotten past 4 miles yet and even those are right at 16mm so getting swept isn't a matter of if but when.

I'm still going to the after party with DH and DS but I'm not sure what I'll do yet. Hopefully some miracle will happen and I'll just end up at the finish line but if not, i'll either just have fun while I can along the route or just do the 5k and have an awesome vacation.

Stay positive, but stay a little realistic, too. You never know what will happen in the next couple of months. And never underestimate the power of Disney magic.

From Wisconsin and are headed down early Friday mourning with my DW & DM. I just hope we get to the expo in time to enjoy the expo.:thumbsup2

Can you upgrade the park tickets that you can buy through the special sports price link? It goes up to a 7 day ticket but we might need a 10 day ticket. Can I go to guest relations and just pay the difference? Would the ticket value be the regular price or discounted TOT10 miler price?

I "think" you can upgrade, but I would call Run Disney and/or WDW and ask to be sure. If you can, be sure to do the math and see how much it would cost. I think if you can upgrade, you would have to pay the difference in the full price, not a discounted price. So for example, if you paid $199 for your discounted tickets, but those tickets would have cost $275 with no discount, you would have to pay the difference to the $275, plus the extra to upgrade. It might be cheaper to decide ahead of time and buy the tickets through Run Disney. I hope that makes sense. Again, I am not sure if I am right or not, but it I am, it could be costly to upgrade I think.

Hi! Just joining the thread...DH and I are signed up for the ToT (and the half in January). Unless I sign up for something local between now and then, the T0T will be my first organized race. Ever. ! I completed a C25K recently and dove into the midst of the Galloway program for the ToT. I'd been running 3-4x/week, so the transition was pretty smooth. I made the 7 last weekend :woohoo: and am just going to keep chugging along...can't wait!

Amanda, I'd love to see you! I'm much less stressed out than I was the last time you saw me. :) Eric and I will be traveling without the kids for both weekends, too, so maybe we can manage to get together for an adult beverage! :)

To answer earlier question...
I live in NY. Just north of NYC (I work in the Bronx). I'm flying down after work on Thursday and flying home Monday evening.
I'm leaving my family at home and rooming with a DIS friend. Looking forward to lots of meets with runDisney friends!!!

I don't think special event tickets, including runDisney, are upgradable. They are the same as conference tickets and the like, and you can't upgrade even at their face value.

I am headed off for my 7 mile run. It took me two tries last week to do the 6miles last week, but hopefully the first one will be all it takes this time.

I found myself very tired towards the end of long run last week so I purchased some gels to start trying them out. I just used my first one and what a texture to try to swallow while running.:scared: I swished it with water to swallow which helped but I don't know if I could get used to that. I will attempt to take the second during my run. I also purchased sports beans which I will try next week. I think those might be better b/c I usually chew gum during running.

There is a difference in the thickness in the manufacturing of the gels. Try a variety. With the beans, just be careful when popping them in your mouth when running because one might find its way into your throat before you chew it.

Good luck with your 7 miler. :thumbsup2

Good luck - you can do it! FWIW, I prefer chewing my fuel and it's a toss-up between Clif Shot Blocks and Honey Stinger Chews as my favorite... so I throw a few of each in my waist pouch and pick on the run, lol! I have low blood sugar issues to start, so my way may not be great for all, but I've found I need to fuel EARLY and often, in small amounts. On my last long run (8.5 miles), I took one or two chews/blocks every 1.5 miles and it was just right; no tummy grumbling and no blood sugar crashes.

Just finished a short run and noticed that my average pace for July is 22 seconds faster than my average pace for June. Woohoo! Yes, I'm crunching seconds here because that's probably how much I'll either miss the sweeper bus by or get on the sweeper bus by.

I went and picked up my number for my 10K race tomorrow and was able to buy some Zensah compression sleeves. I'm glad I was able to try them on. I am right on the edge of the sizes and though they both felt fine, I went with the smaller size. (once this weight starts coming off, maybe that will be a good choice) They didn't have black, so I went with purple. They are amazing! I'm not sure if I will run with them tomorrow night, but I'm glad I have them for after the race.

I tried my first gel last weekend with my 7.89 miles and it didn't sit well with me. It took several days for me to feel better. I grabbed a few other types/chews and will slowly work through them. The people at the running store weren't very helpful as to what I might prefer to like, so I guess it's all trial and error.

Does anyone want to share their costume ideas for the ToT? I need to start thinking about what I want to do. I did Rapunzel for the Royal Family in Feb, but want something new this time.:confused3

Have you tried the Jelly Belly Sport Beans? I swear by those... The gels never sat well with me either.

I actually have a pack of those too to try. Since I am still new to running, it's hard to know what I need and when. I like being told take this and when. :thumbsup2 I just need to decide which one to try for tonight's race. The good news is if it upsets my stomach, I will be home for most of Sunday. :thumbsup2

Ugh, I am SO behind!! I got injured last month, and my jobs have been all over the place, at one point working 3 jobs, now I'm back down to 2 jobs which is easier, but I haven't had much time to train and I am so horribly behind!!

But I'm gonna pick myself back up and Monday I will get my run in!!

Just thought I would run this by all of you since you have all been so helpful in the past. (I posted about my side aches...got feedback and I incorporated massage to my diaphram in my pre run stretching. If I do that... no side ache..if I forget.. side ach :sad2:)

So I have always been prone to joint swelling in the heat. (visibly so.. like the ball joint in my ankle disappears and there is no definition to the back near the heel of my foot. Just one thick cankle) I do take something that has helped and prior to starting up running in the heat and humidity I had little to no swelling issues. Lately, my ankles and wrists have been swelling again. This causes a lot of pain to the joint (it is hard to walk on let alone run) I am not sure if there is some sort of stretch or drink or supplement or SOMETHING that would help. My ds who is a runner tells me I just need to stay better hydrated, but when I do increase my fluids, I just balloon more... then when the swelling goes down I am in and out of the rest room. Thoughts? I did manage to get through my run today... but my time was down a bit and instead of getting in 5 miles I came in just under at 4.89.
