Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

My DH and DS are running the 5k that morning so after that we are just going to chill at the resort. Maybe do some swimming or cane pole fishing (we are at POR) and if I'm feeling up to it maybe a round of mini golf. We'll try taking a nap during the day if we can. We are doing an early lunch at the resort since they have the pasta bar and I'll eat something light for dinner. We've decided not to do the parks that day and Sunday we all 3 have massages scheduled :lovestruc we might venture to the parks that night. We have a 6:30 ADR at Ohana's so we might just tour resorts on the monorail. Now on Monday.....it'll be GO GO GO, commando!!!!!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do as far as food. I'm also debating how much park touring I'm going to do on Saturday. I'm just going down for a long weekend, so I'm going to have to force myself to take it easy and not plan a huge park day!

We are taking a long weekend too and have decided to make that day a resort day (POFQ) with an early dinner at Boatwright's.

I'm still on the fence about whether or not I'm going to do the 5k that morning. I want to but I don't want to tire myself out for the "big race". Regardless, I see that day as a major pool and rest day. Maybe downtown Disney and earl of sandwich for lunch. Then just light healthy snacks a couple hours before the race.

My friends and I have typically done the 5K prior to the half marathons we done in the past. We usually wear costumes, walk the entire distance and take pictures. Nevertheless they have been a few times when I was by myself for the 5K so I ran the entire distance. To me the 5K is a warm up and I have plenty of time of rest before the longer race.

-All-

If you feel the urge to run the 5k, then by all means go out and run it. Honestly, if you are well trained for the 10 miler a 5k in the morning should not make a difference. It's 14.5 hours earlier so physiologically, its no different than taking a jog the day before an early morning 10 mile race.

I guess that if I were to caveate this advice it would be only for those who are struggling to meet a 16 minute pace at an all out effort. If you are one of these runners, I would suggest not running the 5k in the morning.

Just have a good time in the 5k and do not push it for a PR.

I just signed up to run the Happy Haunt 5K that morning. I'm excited, but also very anxious, since it will be my first race. And I'm really looking forward to the after party too!

So coach, in regards to the 5k, as I am one of the "pace strugglers" if I just walked it with no running, would that adversely affect my race for the 10 miler? At the moment I am feeling more confident because I have the distance and my pace gets better each week.

I'd love some advice on eating prior to the ToT. What are other people doing that day?

We haven't figured everything out yet, but I think we'll probably go to a park at rope drop and have a solid lunch, then head back to the resort to take a good nap in the afternoon, then a light dinner (plain chicken breast, maybe, if I can find it, or a baked potato). I've never done a night race before, so I'm a little nervous about my stomach. The nap is so that I can make it through the whole party until 3 AM!

I would hate to see a person who is on the verge of being swept take a chance of over exerting and then fail in the main event. Making the 5k a pure walking event and avoiding the parks in the later part of the day would probably not any worse than taking a tour of Epcot... walking to the tram and then walking through the entire park. Just play it by ear. If your later training times give you a positive expectation, then go for it. If they leave you coming to WDW feeling a little bleak, then just grab the shirt and pass.

Deal?

My mom is running the 5k and DH and I are running the 10mile. I feel like I want to run the 5k with my mom-we trained and completed the Princess 1/2 in Feb and it would be fun to do this with her as well. However, I'm not so nervous about the 3.1 miles as I am about the early morning and late night combination.

Does anyone think a trial 'run' would set my mind at ease? Maybe I could get an early run in one morning and then do my 'long' run later and see how I feel?

I'm using the same approach to this race as the Wine & Dine.

•5K first thing.
•Back to room to freshen up and don some comfy clothes
•Fairly decent breakfast.
•Putz around a park. Maybe mini-golf.
•Dinner around 5, similar to what I eat at home on nights when I run. (keep the new stuff on race day to a minimum).
•Board bus at suggested time.

Good morning!

Can I put in this one shameless plug for fundraising for the Tower of Terror 10 miler? I am fundraising for Autism Speaks - Disney's official charity for the race. If you want to support me in this cause, please visit my Wish Journal for the links:

Or for Canadian donations:

For US donations:

I believe I am following the rules for posting for fundraising as I got clarification from a mod.

I would be very happy and grateful for any donations: 100% goes to Autism Speaks. Thanks for considering. If it's not your thing, no worries. :flower3:

Very excited that I talked my dad into walking the 5k with me. He agreed that if I'm not feeling strong enough to do both then we'd pick up the very expensive "phony" shirts, as he called it, and skip it. Knowing he'll be registered too gives me even more motivation to keep working as hard as I can so I'll be strong enough for both.

:thumbsup2 Good Luck! I would love to try both, but the 10 miles might be my limit.

I have a Galloway Magic Mile question. I have my first one tomorrow. Am I supposed to run/walk at a pace that is slightly challenging, but I'm able to do or am I supposed to jog it at a pace I can handle non-stop? I'm a little confused. I lost my c25k training where I could jog nonstop for 20 mins. I don't think I can do that at the faster pace I have been training at.

My understanding is to do the fastest mile you can achieve using any combo of run/walk. I usually run 1/4 mile then walk 10-15 sec. Or you can use your usual run/walk ratio but run faster. The idea is that at the end of the mile you feel like you couldn't go much further.

For the first time ever I wore out a pair of running shoes. I got some new ones today. Hope to take them for about a 5 mile spin later today. Woo hoo!

I did my magic mile today. I was using Jeff's 1/2 marathon app and I don't like the way he did it. After the warm up, he had some jogging, then drills, THEN the magic mile. By that time I was worn out and the sun had come out more. I had to change my pace since I couldn't jog for a minute, which was frustrating. I so wanted to quit, but I kept at it, jogging when I could and walking the other times. In the end, I did the MM in 12:02, which is faster than I ran the 5k. So overall, I'm happy! I'm still slow, but faster than I was. :cool1:
