Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

I'm sorry you can't run in September! I don't know about the transferring the money, but I would call Run Disney and ask them and offer to send them a doctor's note. I have read that the Princess has in the past has allowed you to defer it, but it's not listed for the ToT. I would think there is a wait list, they would be willing to let you.

Thanks, I'm really bummed. This is the first distance race my kids were going to run with me, I was really looking forward to having a finish line picture of the 3 of us!

I just talked to Disney and they said no deferments either. It's a shame, I know someone could use my spot and now it will go to waste. I guess they factor in a percentage of people not running when they set their limits though.

PrincessV, I think I passed you on the CBR running trail early on a Thrus. am.~ is that when you ran?:wave2:
Oh my gosh - yes! How funny and cool! It really was a beautiful morning, wasn't it? I'm really looking forward to running there again. :goodvibes

We were gone for 10 days (used Hard Rock Hotel's gym after that)and I did ok with training, not great, but I'm proud of what I did do.
As you should be - WTG! :thumbsup2

Princess V, I love reading your blog too, it's motivating and encouraging!:flower3:
Thank you so much - that really means a lot!

Any advice anyone on the intervals, or thoughts on what I have written? Thanks in advance!
I am in no way an expert, so I can only speak to my own experiences... for me, intervals are crucial for two reasons: 1. I have exercise-induced asthma, and 2. I battle potentially debilitating past injuries. Running straight through just isn't a realistic option for me. But if you're already doing so comfortably, there probably isn't a reason to change things up. Maybe try it on a short run and see how it feels?

I did my 1st Magic Mile of this training cycle and was thrilled with my 9:39! Even better since it was already 75F and very humid.
Awesome! :cheer2:

And now just need the husband to come home to watch the kiddo and the dog and I are off on a long run. The thermometer says it's a balmy 60 degrees! :rotfl:
I've been soooooo good with icing my foot...I might be imagining it, but I think it's feeling better.

I'm trying to figure a way to crawl through the computer and internetz to get to WA. It is over 100° today. :sunny::sunny::sunny:

I'm with jeanigor; I wish we could get anything close to the 60s that you guys are seeing. Over the next 10 days here there isn't a day that's cooler than 98 during the day or cooler than 78 at night! :scared1:

It's seriously tough to get in any sort of distance running without running at 5 am. But I suppose we're in luck that the FL heat won't be quite as rough on us.. :confused3

Heading out for a quick 3k run shortly even though it is 97 degrees out because I am heading to the movies later and won't want to run after that. Wish me luck! Will have lots of water and take it easy. Luckily there is a terrific breeze and the humidity is only 40% today.

I am pleased with my dedication :rotfl:

Hahahahahaha! It ended up being about 76 when I started off today. I felt GREAT! The dog, not so good. No more warm runs for her. I even stopped twice for water for her as I brought her portable bowl. Ended up seeing a friend and had them take her home.....:(.

Several years ago I was at Disney in late Sept/early October and it was 95 degrees with 95% humidity! I have never seen those numbers the same and I see humidity in DC all the time! It was awful.

On the flip side, I have been during the same time and it is a nice sunny day, where you think "it can't get any better than this." :thumbsup2

I'm planning on a bringing a tank top and a short sleeve top and might add a throw away jacket at the last minute. I walked the dog twice today and got in over 2 miles, but it wasn't enjoyable when we lost the shade of the trees!

I was really, really surprised by how comfortable WDW was in the early mornings and evenings when I was there last week! I actually had on a light sweater a couple nights. Mind you, I'm acclimated to the west coast of FL at this point, where the Gulf keeps our overnight "lows" in the 80s and humidity is much higher than in Orlando (I know- hard to believe that's possible, right?!) But I did come away thinking, "Okay, the TOT has got to be more comfortable than what I'm running in now!" :thumbsup2

So I got new shoes on Saturday fitted at Fleet Feet. Went on a run, planning 5 miles, but only finished 3 because they were too tight and hurt badly. Took them back on Sunday and got some different ones. Ran Monday and shins hurt badly after a mile. Pain stopped when I stopped running/walking. Tried again this morning and pain again. Again it stopped when I stopped. Do the shoes just need breaking in? I don't remember my last/first pair causing issues but I wasn't running nearly as much 6 months ago when I got them as I am now. I'm concerned that if I'm having to cut my workouts shirt due to pain I'll fall behind in my training or worse, injure myself. Thoughts?

My opinion is that expensive, quality running shoes should never need breaking in. Mine have always been great from the first run, and I've come to expect that. Usually I feel great because they are such an improvement over the ones I had worn out. Others may have better advice, but I'd go back to the store again.

I agree running shoes shouldn't need breaking in. I always try to wear my new pair on shorter runs at first, to see how they feel. Today, I wore my new pair for 11 miles. I intended to wear an older pair, but I wasn't going back to change them. I also, would go back to the store and mention the problems. You are going to a reputable running store, so they should be able to help you find the shoes that work for you. Even if they have to order them for you. I've learned, if I find a pair I like, buy a second pair. You are correct in your concern about injury.

I was able to find another pair of my old shoes online so I ordered them yesterday. It does concern me though because the girl who fitted me Sunday says I should have never been put into the old ones. I got those from a locally owned running store, which has just as good a reputation locally as Fleet Feet. She looked at the wear on them and said they aren't wearing evenly which means they were the wrong shoe. However, what she put me in is so much worse, in my opinion. So I don't know what to do.

I can commiserate with the high heat. In Columbus Ohio we've been having days in the mid 90s :furious: (that's not an angry smilie, that's me exploding from the heat).

Last night we went jogging at 9:30 pm to get away from the heat but it was still real bad. The air was just so hot it was oppressive.

Next week we are in for temps in the low 90s, hurrah.

I'm kicking myself for not registering for the 10-miler. I'm happy I'm doing the 5K, but after just one week of training, I really think I could be ready for the 10-miler by September. I ran for a good hour the other day, and felt like I could keep going for awhile.

I got some new shoes a few weeks ago an have been wearing them on short runs recently and will be wearing them more and more and phasing out my old shoes.

I got a 6 miler in today and it was ok for the first half ad then I just started to die. My legs have been really fatigued lately (I lead adventurous tours on top of my running) and so I'm thinking next week will be my rest week.

I would like to purchase a Tower of Terror bib. I see this all the time, but I am not sure if it is "illegal." So if this is okay to do, if anyone cannot go and has a bib for sale, please let me know.

I don't think you'll find one. From what I've read, the runners don't get them until the day before the race, and they have to pick them up themselves, they're not mailed. So I'm guessing anyone who physically picks them up, will be there to run.

It's possible to do. There are no transfers so you'll have to run under the name of the person that actually registered...which means you wouldn't be able to use the official time as proof for a future race requiring proof of time, but if you don't mind that, it's do-able. You can find someone that registered, and now can't run but is still going to be at WDW and will go pick up their race packet. Then you can just agree on a place to meet to get the packet from them. I did this a few years back for the DL 5K. The other option is to have the person that wants to sell their bib to you fill out the packet pick up authorization form that will be posted on the race website when waivers become available. That form, along with their signed waiver, will allow you to pick up their packet at packet pick up. Of course none of this is official and it's not condoned by the race organizers or Disney, but it's not something they police and I'm sure they are aware it happens at every race. Good luck!

Where did everyone go? It's been quiet here for a few days.

I had a long run today in the cool misty rain. It probably was one of my longest and it wasn't easy at times. I managed to finish it (7.76 miles) and got a preview of the 10K race for next week.
