Official Cake Chatter Thread

This whole cake thread has been very interesting to me. We are going to Disney at the end of Sept to celebrate a number of big family events --

1) Our son's adoption
2) My SIL's 30th
3) Niece's sweet 16
4) FIL's birthday
5) IL's anniversary

We are planning 3 group dinners -- Mickey's BBQ, 'Ohanas, and another to be determined. Love to surprise everyone with a grand celebration cake. First question: can we get such a cake at either of our already chosen locations (maybe 'Ohana)? Next question: if these locations don't work where could we do it and meet the eating needs of a big group who range in age from a year to 82? Finally, any suggestions about how to decorate a cake that will celebrate our family's many wonderful events?

Thanks!

Kathie

I would think you'd be fine doing it at O'Hana. How about a cake that has the white chocolate Mickey in the tux and lots of curling ribbon streamers? Check out the third picture here: http://www.wedding-flowers-and-reception-ideas.com/unique-wedding-cake.html It's way more cake than you need but they may be able to do something similiar on an 8 or 10 inch cake.

I don't think the Moderate resorts are really set up to handle cake requests. Whenever we hear of it happening, it always sounds like it took a miracle...

You definitely can order a Mickey Head from the BoardWalk Bakery. They *may* be able to deliver it for you, but the charge could be hefty. Then again, maybe you'll get some pixie dust. I say call them! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the reply - you're not wrong about moderates not being set up for this! I first called 8 days ago and left a mesage - in my eyes that's not an acceptable wait time for someone to return a message :confused3

I've called another 4 times spoke to front desk and sent a couple of faxes - last one yesterday - will see if anyone responds but not holding out much hope! It's really starting to stres me out! :scared1:

So, I've decided, if no-one calls back then I'm going to leave it. I might get a podium cake when we're at Tony's in MK on his birthday and I've ordered a mini castle cake the week after for when we're at GFC.

Anyone have any experience of the Podium cakes? do they put candles on? How bad are they really? Chocolate or Vanilla - which is better?

Appreciate it if anyone has any recent experience - especially in Tony's!

TIA (and sorry for the mini rant!)

Sorry you're having so much trouble... :sad2: We had podium cake at Tony's back in September - dunno if that's recent enough - and it tasted like a standard grocery store cake: thick, sugary buttercream and light spongey cake. I happen to like grocery store cake, so I was OK with it, but I know lots of people prefer whipped cream frosting. It had orange and black sprinkles for Halloween. I think now they're more confetti-like.

Hope this helps!

This helps a lot - think this should be OK for us - he'll have the mini castle cake as a suprise when we go to GFC!!

Not too fussy about cake so sure it'll be fine ( as long as it' not too dry!!)

Thanks again.

I'm wondering if I can get a Mickey Head cake at Ohana's??

Anyone have any pics of cakes they got at the Poly....specifically Ohana's. We aren't interested in a podium cake. TIA! :goodvibes

Has anyone ordered the Mini Treasure Chest cake? If so, how was it? What options do you have? My daughter LOVES chocolate cake!

Ok, So I called Pat yesterday about the Jack Skellington Cake! And I got a machine and left my number and what I wanted! She called me back today! She was soooooooo nice!!! I told her I was looking for a 6 inch cake Choc w/ Choc buttercreme and I wanted Jack Skellington on it! She was ike who was that? I said you know the skellington from Nightmare before Christmas and she was like yes Jack? ok. My DD loves him! So she said we have some really cute ones of him we'll make it really fun! I can't wait to see this cake! It was $21 + $30 for the image so $51 total! And she said that they will add it to our bill at the GF Cafe that night! :woohoo:

So you CAN get a smaller cake with special decorations.....I thought they would only do 10 inch cakes. (ok, I only check in here every once and a while) We have a party of 8 for dinner at Citricos (provided all goes well booking ADRs tomorrow morning) and we will all be getting on the Disney Magic the next day. I'd love to do an 8 inch Bon Voyage cake! Guess I will go ahead and make that call now. I'd think they could do the DCL logo. And I'll see if one of my cruise-mates with 'go in on it' with me!:thumbsup2

She did it for me so I assume so:). But I did have to give my ressie number when i placed the order.

We are having it at breakfast on Wednesday. I was not given any flavor options when I ordered it, so I am guessing it is vanilla...

Anyone care to offer advice...
My 40th during our trip. (Not looking forward to the BD year, but the trip takes the sting out of it). DH wants to get a cake, but that pretty much means I figure out the details (perhaps that is better :) ). It's a special trip and we are staying CL, so he'll only need to send an email.

We are starting our trip at BC, but for those few nights we are using the DDP and there's so much dessert already. However, I am reading such great reviews about YC/BC cakes.
Next to the Poly. My thought was to have a cake delivered to the room and I was told this wouldn't be a problem. We aren't using the DDP and we could munch on it for a couple of days (or more).
My BD dinner celebration is at CG.

About 3 years ago, I got the most beautiful cake after a dinner at Ohana. It was delicious, also. Chocolate with chocolate mousse. It was so much cake, though, for 4 people plus we were on DDP. We cut it into chunks and still not all of it would fit in the fridge. Such a shame to throw it out.

Sorry for all the ramblings. I'm leaning toward cake delviered to room at Poly, but if YC/BC is that much better, would choose them and can't rule out cake after dinner at CG (although, I don't think I've seen any photos of cakes from there).

I would love opinions.

I LOVE chocolate cake. The more chocolate, the better. Also want something special.

Ideas? Suggestions?

I can not wait until tomorrow night, we leave for WDW at 0300 hours tomorrow morning. We have dinner at Cape May cafe and will be getting the special cake I requested for my children. Of course it is going to be way too much for us, but some times you just need to celebrate. So excited to see their faces. So if any one will be eating at Cape may Cafe tomorrow evening June 7th around 1930 hours, come join us for some birthday cake, Mad Hatter style!

We got two of them in March and they weren't bad. They are like a vanilla cupcake with some seriously sweet icing on top. I would suggest that when you get there you remind the server so that they can take it out of the freezer and allow it to defrost some before you try to eat it.

I just wanted to share my experience. I spoke with Pat from Cakes yesterday and she was very accomodating and we were able to plan the perfect cake for my sisters 12th birthday! I ordered the mini 2 tiered wedding cake that someone posted on page 2 of the thread. I got chocolate cake with white buttercream frosting inbetween the layers. I asked if it was possible to have the outside of the cake iced in light pink with darker pink piping used to decorate. That was no problem!! Pat said she really liked my "vision" and said she made a note on the order to make it "extra special". Also she said they would write "Happy Birthday Olivia" on the plate as well. The whole thing cost $30US. :cheer2:

I will be sure to post pictures when I get home!!

Please do, because this is what I'm getting when I go! I'm glad they still make it. I didn't know you could do chocolate cake though, I'm glad you can!

I guess I would say that ordering a cake at Y&BC only matters if you want fancy decorations. It sounds like the Poly can get you a chocolate on chocolate cake, they just don't do fancy ones. But I would confirm that the Poly cake would be fresh and not a previously frozen one.

Also, I *think* someone had a really chocolatey cake from CG just a few pages pack, but maybe I'm misremembering.
