My point is that we dont even know if she even knew these students. She may have heard and had no idea who they were. She , shocker, may not even cared... yes, that is possible.

I find it hard to pull out a story that has nothing to do with her directly, and use it to "excuse" her out of a bad performance. Yes, tragic, yes, sad, but honestly and truly has nothing to do with Mikalah.

Wow, you're pretty tough! How do you know that it had nothing to do with her and had no effect on her. To even insinuate that she may not have cared is pretty cold.

Show business is rough and cold too. I personally don't think Simon is out of lone in most (maybe 7/8) of his comments too.

Show business is cruel. If a horrible tragedy occurred the "show must go on". The producers wouldn't care, honestly. If Mikalah was so "overwrought" she could have cancelled or forfeited or even quit.

Realistically, she still had to perform. A good performer would rise above everything and do her best. She didn't do her best.

I don't honestly care what you all think about this, but it is realistic. It is a stretch to excuse a poor perfromance from a mediocre performer (note I didn't say singer) for something that happened at a high school she doesn't even go to anymore.

Even if something absoleutely earth shattering occurred, Mikalah is still obligated to perform. If she was mourning she could have not worn that horrible hoochie momma shirt. She could have used that air time w/Ryan to do a quick condolence. She didn't.

People who think Constantine is smarmy... why? I don't see him that way at all. My brother in law is smarmy.

I think your just looking for excuses on why you don't like him. Just say you don't like him .

As for the group song they did, I really didn't like it. Only like three of them had a good voice in the song.

I'm finding this year more and more disappointing. It's like a bunch of kids playing "rock n roll star".

That would be me. I think he is smarmy because every time I look at him he gives me the willies. To me he looks like a person who would just as soon stab you in the back to get what he wants. I think he has some talent singing wise...but I would never vote for him. And no, I don't like him because i think he is smarmy looking. Sorry...to each his own.

You are entitled to your opinion. Just out of curiosity, why do you say that she no longer goes to that high school. Do you know for sure that she will not go back? I would think that being on the show is only a temporary leave from school. Do you know something that we don't?

As for using air time w/Ryan to do a quick condolence, maybe she was not allowed to make any kind of comments that might solicit sympathy votes. I don't know, just playing devil's advocate.

As for Simon, I also agree with him probably 95% of the time. I'm not saying that Mikayla will win, I honestly don't think that she will. I was only relaying what had just happened in her home high school. Get over it.

I don't agree with that. I went to a large high school. I had 575 kids in my graduating class and, I'd assume, an equal number in the other classes. Two kids a year ahead of me died their senior year -- one in a drug deal gone bad, the other had a heart attack in gym class -- I didn't know either of them personally, yet just about everyone took it hard.

I agree, if you don't like her singing, don't vote for her, but to in essence say "get over it" is harsh.

You make a good point here. When I was in high school, it seemed that just about every year a couple of kids would die (usually from car accidents). Even those who didn't know them personally would be hit hard. I think it has to do with the fact that most teenagers consider themselves pretty much invincible. Death is something that happens to other people, usually those who are much older. It doesn't excuse her previous performances, but I still feel for her.

Harsh? No. There was no mention of this during the show. Do you know if she was directly involved? My high school class had thousands upon thousands of students in it. I didn't know everyone. If she quit high school to go on AI, would she technically be not a student there? So, yes, four student died. Did she know these students? Were they in her grade?

I'm just sick of all the sob backstorys. The trach, the I have no family, the my daddy told me I would account to nothing, this accident, the hocking of the wedding rings... these are just manufactured stories to produce "sympathy votes". I vote purely on talent.--of which Mikalah has limited amounts.

Geesh a little on the angry side. I'm sorry but have you ever been through something like this. I know at my high school there was always the kid who unfortunaley died. I also know that those following days were tough on everyone, even the people who they weren't friends with. Think about if one of your co workers were to die, could you seriously go to work the next day and not be affected at all. Put yourself in her place she went through this and then had to go infront of 30 million people and sing.

It's not always the case for highschoolers, though....unfortunately...I remember one year at my highschool like 3 or 4 kids died...a suicide, car wreck, and couple drug-related deaths. Even some kids were unrespectful while the announcement was made...others just moved on. I live in a relatively small town, but even considering that, our school is quite large. It all depends on the situation.

Usually, if anyone feels upset at a death within their highschool, it's because they've finally realized they're not immortal...something could happen to them or their friends. Of course, some are still oblivious.

I cared about the losses of the students at my highschool...my heart ached for their friends and family, since I could relate (I lost my brother when he was 18 and in high school). Still, by the end of the day, it was in the back of my mind...I didn't know them...I couldn't even picture their faces...it wasn't that I wasn't sad. For Mikayla....if she personally knew the students, then okay...possibly...but you need to be able to put on an act...performers need to put on that facade in order to make a great performance. Do you think some of the top performers are extremely happy-go-lucky EVERY time they perform? Odds are, no...some may be tired...upset...p/oed at someone...but they don't show it. If something bad happens, and she's on tour...how many people will demand a refund if she doesn't perform well at all..."as a result of the unfortunate event"?

I dislike sympathy votes as well. One was Scott of this year's Top 12. He has talent, but no personality, and no real 'performance'...just a good voice. He gets his share of sympathy votes because of his lack of support from family...admit it, I've heard many people who said they voted *mainly* due to this fact. I wish he could prove his dad wrong, but it's not fair to those who have the "whole package" to be ripped-off just to allow someone to make a point.

He wasn't the only one though...Jessica from Road to Stardom. Maybe I'm a bit bias, rooting for Matt, but I did not appreciate Jessica's sob-stories in order to pursuade Missy Elliot to pick her as the winner. A performer needs to have a good voice, good performing skills, a passion for their work, and a big personality. I consider using sob-stories to be rather low...but then again, maybe I just like the more optimistic personalities better...?

As a matter of fact, I have four times. Once in 8th grade, and in subsequent years.

Yes, I knew them as well.

But this thread isn't about me. As much as others want it to be.

Its about Mikalah performances and the "sob back storys" of all performers in the show. I, like Fly Fly, think that Scott shoudl have the "total package" instead of getting the "he has no family" and gets sympathy votes. I live in Trach boy area, and honestly, I never voted for him because I don't like his singing. (only one style) Yes, there are sympathy news stories occasionally on him, but it doesn't do a thing to influence me for votes. Those sob stories are in effect, subtle marketing techniques to produce votes.

I vote with only talent, and longevity in mind. I personally do not listen to any backstorys good or bad because I want to vote objectively.

Show business is cruel and harsh. She still had to perform. She may not even known or cared. (yes beleive it or not). I've had suicides in my building (I work in a school--student that have committed suicide) and other students are excited about a day off NOT the funeral.

We have no idea, and frankly I'm tired of talking about it.

Good god. When I was in high school we had someone die every year. It barely caused us to notice.

Can we please get back to the subject?

Personally, I like the back stories. But they have NO influence on who I would vote for... if I voted.

ETA: What I don't like is those stupid vignettes, and songs where everybody sings as a group. HATE THOSE.

I think we are on the subject. the subject is American Idol 4, what you think of it, how the votes are going, what parts people like and dislike. Apparently, people on the dis want to talk about wether or not they enjoy the "back stories" . As evidenced by popular magazines (us, people, star), millions of americans care about the background, every day life and tragedies that involve celebrities.
I find these back stories to be along the same lines as these magazine articles. And let us not forget television shows such as Entertainment tonigh. While you may not have cared when people died, at your high school. I am sure that there were many people who did. I am also sure that if while Lindsay Lohan was still attending regular school, several students were killed in a crash, it would have been reported.

Funny, that is one of my favorite parts, I think you get to see a little more of each ones voice because that is a song picked for them, not one they picked...so you get to see how Bo's voice is when not singing Rock..Carrie when not singing Country....etc...etc

for me, i like bo, constantine, scott, and like you, in no particular order.

i love the weekends, but can't wait til tuesday!! ::yes::

My faves are Anwar, Nadia, Scott and Bo, not necessarily in that order. I think it will come down to two guys in the end.

Mikalah is a favorite of my BF and my sister, but I cannot STAND her. I figured it out, she's aLOT like me! UGH~! THEY like her because they CHOOSE to be around that type, I personally would rather die! :rotfl2:

I cannot deal with her anunciation when she sings. It seems so affected and phony. I do understand the attraction but it all about taste and familiarity.

Constantine has grown on me, I really didn't like him at first but there is something about him... (I REALLY like his height, he just DWARVES Ryan big time!!) Anwar's smile just FLOORS me, I would just like to take HIM home! I like Nadia's performances, but for some reason I don't like her smile... don't ask me why, she just seems sort of wooden.

As for :cool1: Scott... well, let's just say play that funky music, white boy... :p
