Official 2015 Disneyland Half Marathon Thread.

Does anybody know if they're introducing any new shoes for the DL Half? They had a new shoe for the Tink....and introduced an 860 version of the "retro" shoe at another race (Princess Half?).

The soup is very similar, but I actually liked the grilled cheese a little bit better than the one at Beaches & Cream! The bread to cheese ratio went less/thinner bread and more gooey cheese.

I'm planning on trying the three-cheese Monte Christo at Cafe Orleans this trip, for research purposes. You know. Science and all that.
I texted my BFFs - Jolly Holiday Bakery is on the food list (you know...for *science*). Thanks for the tip!! :)

As I understood their announcement before Marathon Weekend in January, runDisney/New Balance are coming out with new shoes for each race weekend - so I'd expect to see a new design (or more than 1 new design) at DLH weekend + leftovers of the other designs they have released this year.

Good call. Trying to think if there's anything else I might have forgotten that lines up with places I remember from your previous trip reports ...

Also try the Practically Perfect Punch at Jolly Holiday. It's like a "mocktail" - pomegranate limeade. Soooooooo good.

@Keels it's on the list! :)

They also have deeelicious desserts there - like macaroons. I haven't tried any of the cupcakes there, but that's definitely on my list.

Going from touring solo last year to touring with seven other people this time around - could be daunting to most. But to me, it just means I get to try more food without spending a million dollars!

Costume update. We are not big into costumes or running with costumes but decided it would be fun to try.
So after an exhaustive search of ideas, DW and I are sticking with Mickey and Minnie as our theme.
Her costume will be amazing, so many options and choices we found a really fun one. My Mickey will be a lot harder to put together, I've got the ears or a sorcerer hat with ears, and the big gloves. May try to put together some red shorts with yellow spots but not much out there on the web to choose from. Any suggestions?

Another option for the ears could be those Minnie barrette clips if you're not wearing a hat. They sell them in the hat store next to the Opera House in Town Square. I think they're like $5 and you could cut off the bows.

I've been playing on Polyvore this afternoon and come up with some outfit inspirations to work from.

Here is my 5k outfit:

My Friday parks outfit:

Half marathon outfit:

Sunday parks outfit:

Of course I will be tweaking these considerably - this is just based on what I could find on Polyvore. Can't wait for my Mulan weekend!

Love the outfits and Friday park outfit is so pretty!

Rambling post ahead...
ETA: sheesh, this thing turned into a novel! Oops...

So yesterday I had an epiphany that the fall marathon I started training for is just something I really DO NOT want to do - there is this voice in the back of my head that keeps telling me I MUST do a non-Disney marathon some day. Why I feel this way, I'm not sure.

My husband made the (correct) observation that whenever I train for longer non-Disney races at home, it seems to suck the joy out of running for me. It doesn't seem to happen with shorter at-home races...

I really do enjoy running. But this marathon has been like a dark cloud hanging over my head ever since I signed up for it. I've felt similarly when I've signed up for half marathons at home and then put a ton of pressure on myself to PR at them. It's just not fun anymore.

At any rate, like I said, I think I signed up for this marathon because I felt like I *had* to - again, not sure why I felt that way. So I emailed the race director yesterday to see if I could drop down to the half. I feel like a quitter, but at the same time I also feel incredibly, incredibly relieved and excited to do some dedicated Dumbo trainings this summer. - that excitement greatly weighs out the guilt I'm feeling, for sure. I feel like this took a lot of pressure off of me, so I think dropping to the half (if they let me) is the right decision.

This is making me wonder if I'd be happier just training for a Disney race or two each year and keeping the at-home races to a minimum. I guess the local races are starting to feel like work, like a chore or something, and aren't that enjoyable to me anymore. :confused3

So to any of you following the Galloway Dumbo plan...I'll be joining you on Tuesday! Thanks for letting me vent incoherently. :)

Don't feel like a quitter! Dropping down to the 1/2 is still running and more than most people will do on a Sun. What if, like you said, focus on rD races for a year to take a step back and see if you miss the local races and then jump back in the following year. You'll still be training for the rD races just clearing your head a bit. :goodvibes

When I was at Tink, someone I was eating dinner w/ one night was telling me he was talking to one of the NB people and they said that there'll be a new shoe. I don't remember if there was a character attached to it, he told me it would be very colorful though.

I was excited to try the three cheese Monte Cristo last year but I was a little disappointed. If I remember it was more bread and less cheese. Of course you may love it and that would be just awesome if you did. That grilled cheese looks really good!

Aw, thanks! :) I should probably update that they did let me switch to the half. So I am feeling much better about my decision!

Focusing on just (or mostly) the rD races definitely seems like the way to go for me right now. :)

Ha...that's funny. They must have really gotten the memo that a majority of people didn't love the black & white shoes!

I'm already budgeting to buy a pair of Tink shoes....I may have to set aside some extra cash for another pair depending what they release :)

I wonder if the new shoes will tie in with the Disneyland 60th or Disneyland Half Anniversary theme...

Hopefully there will be some Tink shoes left over for you!

I hope they tie the 10th/60th anniversaries into lots of the race stuff. I think it would be a missed opportunity if they didn't. :confused3 I just keep thinking how crazy it is that the same year of the 60th is the same year of the 10th half marathon...we definitely picked a great year to do this race weekend! :)

So how's training going for everyone?! After my overshare post on the last page, I hit the reset button and plugged the Jeff Galloway Dumbo schedule into my calendar...today was "official" run #1 for me in Dumbo training (35 minutes of run/walk on the treadmill, 3.15 miles). Sort of a weird adjustment to go back to a Galloway plan after following Hal Higdon plans for 4 years (I used a Galloway plan for the 2011 Princess Half...all Higdon after that) but I think it'll be good for me. In addition to the 3 - sometimes 4 - runs per week, I'm planning on doing 2 days of strength training and 1 day of yoga. Curious to see how my body responds to a little less running and a little more cross training this summer. :)

I'm glad you have a plan and refocused on your running goals. I haven't finalized my fall schedule yet so I'm not sure what plan to use. I've been "training" since beginning of May consisting of 4 or 5 runs weekly. But not sure what I'm training for. Lots of hills, lots of heat and humidity. Still experiencing nagging injuries. Strength training is something I want to try as well. DW rarely runs but does a lot of strength exercises.

Just not sure if I'm going to run a fall marathon, (if I do one might as well do two) to sandwich around Dumbo at Labor Day and Harbor Lights right before Thanksgiving. I need a plan!

Strength/core training is supposed to be really helpful for injury prevention. That's one thing I don't love about the Galloway plan - I read the documentation and he makes it sound like any sort of cross training won't help your running at all, which I totally disagree with. :sad2:

I too have loaded Dumbo on to my calendar training is going good. Just having trouble with this magic mile part. I guess I will have to set my Garmin into miles from kilometers. This week it is calling for 4miler at magic mile pace. We don't have a track close by. I always run 10 mins and walk 1. I guess as long as I push a little and hold it that will be fine.

Be careful with those gloves not only the heat but what about coming into the water stations. Big hands small cups! Could cause a problem.

Yeah, I'm not sure where I'm going to do that. Hadn't really thought about it yet...we have a park close by that has a 0.5-mile loop so I may run there from home and do the mile in the park. :) Good luck with yours!!

Yeah, I haven't seen that many people races weekends in the black and white NBs. :rotfl2:

I love the Tink shoes! The main reason I got them was b/c I loved the neon green and yellow and when I found out they glow... :faint:

A tie in would be nice and would awesome! But as much as I would love that, I think that could be a little to race specific if they don't sell out; they have all the leftovers.

Training is going here. I'm kind of at a crossroads and trying to figure my schedules out for everything and I keep flipping on what I'm doing. I have a race the last weekend in July and 2 weeks before that is 16 weeks out for NYC so I keep playing w/ how I'm going to figure my schedule after July out.

I'm starting to get a little tight, so tomorrow I start back up w/ PiYo. I got a groupon for pilates classes and never done that before so that will be interesting. What are you doing for strength training? I need to change things up a bit. Right now for my legs 1 day I'll use the machines w/ low weights and high reps to help build endurance and 1 day I do body weight stuff like squats, lunges, calf raises that type of stuff.

I'm doing the Michelle Bridges (the female trainer on the Aussie version of the Biggest Loser) 12 week half/body transformation program. Just started this week, but I've been following random weeks of the 10k program for a few weeks to get a feel for it. After our tough 10k the weekend before last, I had a full week off training, ready to get stuck in!

I'll admit, this is going to be a hard slog. The program calls for about an hour a day, 6 days a week. There are 3 running days, the rest is strength training, all specific exercises to target the right areas for runners. Winter has just officially begun down under, and it's been icy cold in the mornings. In order to fit my workouts in before work, I have to be up and on the road by 5:30am. Since it's still well and truly dark at that time of the morning, I don't feel that safe going on the nice flat creek trail, and have to stick to the hillier main roads. But at least I get the flat bit for my long run on the weekends lol!

I bought a bikini on the weekend (which I hope to be able to look decent in by race weekend) which I am using as motivation for my non-running days and to keep my nutrition on track. So far it's working a treat!

Training hit the skids here. Sprained my ankle weekend before last during a trail race. Big time swollen and bruised(even my toes were black and blue). Still some swelling but finally able to do a short run today. I'm a week off schedule now. Not a big deal really, just annoyed with the ankle.

Hope everyone's training is moving along. Be here before we know it. :)
