Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

It went over well, and I know that Marvel is now owned by Disney, but I hope to get a picture with Mrs. & Mr. Incredible to update my avatar here and on Twitter.
Not sure where they were last year, but in 2013, Mrs. Incredible & Frozone were about halfway through DHS.

I'm excited I found this thread! We'll be running the Half Marathon next month!! I'm dressing up as Anna and running/walking on my own. Hubby and brother-in-law are also running, but much faster than I am. This is our first Disney run and I'm super pumped!! :)

Welcome! You're going to have such fun! My group is dressing up as Mouseketeers in the full.

Enjoy the ride!

This thread usually makes me happy, but tonight it's making me sad. I got a call from my doctor this evening telling me that there is no way that I can do the half marathon next month. :( I have chronic anemia, and my iron and iron store levels (ferritin) have plummeted (6.3 and 2.x). No running. No raising my heart rate. No half marathon. I'll be thinking of all of you next month, and working at getting back in shape to be able to do another half marathon in the future!

Oh gosh, I am so sorry! That's quite a blow. I am sorry for your disappointment and hope that you get strong really soon. The next marathon weekend will be here before you know it.

Hugs to you!!

I am so sorry about your setback. I hope you get your iron up and are back at it soon!

If the McFlurry isn't what your stomach wants, you're welcome to have a beer at our mile 24 beer stop. :)
Now that's what I'm talking about!!! :worship:

Welcome to the thread! I'll also be run-walking the half (my first half). I'll be going with a Maleficent theme for this race. See you out there & best of luck!

Thanks!! It's my first half as well. Hope to see yall out there! I think I'm even more excited about seeing all the costumes and clever signs people have. Any advice for making it to end?

Oh no! That would be so disappointing! I'm so sorry! Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Sorry to hear about this, and so close to the race too. Rest up, get better, and we'll see you there next year. :)

Trust your training and have fun! As long as you have time, stop for pictures. The costume watching was probably my favorite part of my first Disney race!

The weather and the holidays are playing havoc on my training! I was able to do a 20 miler last month (felt great) but have only managed up to 16.4 this month, on Monday (felt not so great). I can't seem to get in the number of runs that I had been doing. Stupid weather. Stupid holidays. My treadmill only gets me to about 6.5 miles and I'm bored out of my mind. Just breathe. It will all work out, right? Three more weeks....:worship:

So I've been doing pretty good in my training and was looking forward to my last long mileage weekend this Friday/Saturday with 12/26 miles to go. I was ready for the challenge and looking forward to proving to myself that I can run the full event basically; however, I was diagnosed with strep yesterday afternoon. So I obviously can't do my run this afternoon and while I think I should be better by Friday or at least Saturday, I'm not sure if I should do a long run after an illness and while taking amoxicillin. I did some research and this is not the type of antibiotic that is really bad for running and I'm thinking as long as I feel fine and hydrate I should be ok. Does anyone have any experience with running right after coming off an illness like this? Would running 12/26 next weekend instead be too close to the event?

Definitely echo disneyhorselover's advice to trust your training and have fun! My other piece of advice would be to run your own race - it's super easy to get caught up in the excitement of everything around you and start too fast. Stick with your pace and your plan from the beginning so you don't run out of gas at the end. :) You're going to love it!

I'm with you on the weather concerns, for sure. Bad weather has really messed with me in the past (I run in most anything but draw the line at ice, hail, thunderstorms, etc.) and I'm just really hoping to make it through this weekend without any crazy weather happenings. Fingers crossed!

The treadmill is the WORST. The only thing that gets me through is watching TV during the run and looking at the clock as little as possible. :confused3 I'd say 6-6.5 miles is about my limit too.

So I've never had strep before, but I would think that it would be way more beneficial to you to rest and fully recover before trying to run again. I think you're right to be concerned about hydration, but I'm also wondering just how tired you'll be with being sick alone - adding running on top of that might cause you to run yourself ragged.

Personally, if it were me, I think I'd just start tapering now and forget about the 12/26. Whatever training you have done up till now should carry you through, and you want to make sure you're fully recovered by the time you get to WDW. Just my 2 cents. :confused3 Hope you feel better soon!

I've never had strep, but I'd want to make sure I was fully over it before doing any serious mileage. Running much with any illness below the neck is usually not a good idea. As for running 26 next weekend, unless you know you can handle a two week taper, I'd advise against it. I'd opt for something in the 12-16 range instead. Some people do fine with a shorter taper, but many need the extra week of rest and recovery.

Of course! Our friends will be out there with a cooler of ice cold IPA. Perfect carbs for those last few miles.

Excellent! I finally gave in and grabbed a beer during Marine Corps thisyear and it worked out just fine. Though the margaritas sound good, too!

For what it's worth, I have a sinus infection in which my doctor prescribed amoxicillin. He encouraged me to keep running in order to help get all that gunk out of my sinuses...but my point is that the amoxicillin doesn't appear to impact whether one can run or not.

I have noticed I've slowed down slightly since the illness so hopefully that comes back eventually.

I'm with you. I don't have a treadmill at home so I go to a local gym for weekday runs (too dark by the time I get home) or weekend runs when the weather is too bad.

Of late, I've been transferring movies and TV shows to my tablet and watching them while I run using bluetooth headphones. They have TV's at the gym but no sound (there's a radio station playing over the speakers).

That tablet has made running on a treadmill bearable.

I think the difference is the above vs. below the neck "rule" that FFigawi mentions here.

It's different for everyone though...whenever I get a sinus infection (every year or every other year, unfortunately) it knocks me on my you-know-what. Running is pushed aside for a few days in favor of resting. :confused3

Personally I'd be extra cautious and rest up until I'm totally recovered before running again, but that's just me.

I did that last year in December when training for Goofy...we were suffering through the worst winter of my lifetime (not an exaggeration) and my wife actually wouldn't let me do my long runs outside. I guess it really wasn't all that safe. So to the treadmill I went, iPad and headphones in tow. I binge watched Netfilx and it passed the time for 20 miles. I'm getting shudders just thinking about it, yikes. You gotta do what you gotta do though!
