Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

Thanks for posting the shirts...I love the red for the half ! This is my first RD 10k & half and I'm so excited. I'm a bit worry about the weather, I've been running in high 20's and low 30's, I hope I can deal with the warmth and humidity.

The heat will not bother me that much. I was out this afternoon in mid 80's for 5 miles to simulate the last hour.

Anyone else fretting over the weather yet? Sunday is looking really warm to me.

I have been in the trenches as a participant and a volunteer for over ten-twelve years. This race has run out of water/fluid on hot seasons. I don't run the long Disney races without my own powder/gels.

To think that Disney is going to add more water stations is folly.

I'm also down in the heat of Miami and even though I've been known to do crazy things like running around a local park in the middle of August,in the middle of the day with 95 degrees with heat indexes of 120 just to see how many laps (7/8th of a mile) I can do,I know when I'm done,I'm done,5-7 laps or whatever but I don't have to go any further. For a full marathon however I want to see no temperatures even close to 80,even a high of 75 is too much.26 miles is a long way and the higher temps just bring out the issues faster, dehydration and cramping,chafing,etc..Everything about 2014 was so more pleasant than 2013 with the highs in the low to mid 80's.Obviously I'll deal with the heat better than someone from up north but even so I remember getting some pretty nasty chafing in 2013 that I didn't get in 2014.

Yeah I am having visions of 2013. That wasn't a pleasant experience for me at all. I think that was also the year of the disappointing 20 mile suprise.

To start obsessing about the weather. The closer we get, the more accurate the forecast will get. Now Accuweather says low of 58, high of 75. The "morning" forecast says low of 56, high of 66. I can deal with that, but I'm hoping for it to be a little cooler. The Weather Channel and Weather Underground has it being warmer with a high of 79 and a low of 64.

I really want it to be cooler so we all can be more comfortable and I can wear a more accurate Mr. Incredible costume. If it's going to be over 60 at the start, I will have to go with black shorts instead of the red knickers and black speedo.

We need that Thursday/Friday weather to get delayed and slide back to Saturday/Sunday cause Thursday and Friday are looking amazing right now.

Saturday looks fine to me. I'll take a start time temp of 52. It's Sunday morning in the mid-60s I'd like to see cool off quite a bit.

Really not loving the shirts so far. They seem a little simple to me, but I'll reserve my judgement for when I see them in person. I've had 2 weeks of rest and my leg is still pretty iffy, so there's a chance I won't have a reason to wear some of these anyway. :-/

I know we only have a few days left but I hope that's enough to get your leg in good enough shape to let you do your races. Make sure to listen to your body though and don't create an even worse problem for yourself then you may have already.

Can someone suggest a good place for my family to watch me run in Epcot?

Not the finish line... I (hopefully) will be running through Epcot between 9:30 and 10 when it is open. I'm looking for a spot somewhere in Epcot that won't be crowded but from where they can see me coming from a way off. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

Last year it was very hot. What was a savior was that cool gel that you can get from medic stations.
I would suggest to use that. It helped me. Not only with the heat but with the muscles too.
The closer I got to the finish line, the hotter it was of course...you are out in the open road under the sun...so if that's the weather this year than I would suggest using the medic stops for that cool gel.

My guess would be World Showcase maybe Japan. I haven't actually watched from here during marathon so I could be giving you bad advice. I just know Canada and UK always seem congested as does America so my thought would be after France before America and Japan is pretty open with some walls they could sit on to look for you. It gets very busy in front of Spaceship Earth so I would avoid that area.

BioFreeze! I love that stuff. I use it on my knees. I would not suggest putting it on your forehead, it runs with sweat and burns your eyes, ask me how I know. :rotfl2: They sell it at the expo, I think its $12 a bottle or 2 for $20. Its my miracle gel.

One good way to deal with the heat is to carry a small sponge with you and pour water on it at the water stops. Once wet, you can squeeze it over your head, wipe down your arms, tuck it under your hat, or use it in any other number of ways to cool you off. They will sometimes pass out sponges or towels on the course, but it's better to have your own from the start if it's really warm.

Had my first running-related anxiety dream last night - dreamt I suddenly had signed up for the 5k in addition to the half this week (my first). Didn't know where the start line was, forgot my number and race belt, then thought I was going to get swept after taking character photos so decided to run full out on the last part of the race, then worried I had used up too much energy to survive my first half (which in my dream was the next day).

Glad I got that anxiety dream out of the way ;) Maybe I should listen to some uplifting Disney music before bed for the next few days...

thanks for the insight!

Yes! I second this... for all my long runs and races I take a Chill towel with me (if you have run a Disney race in that last 1-2 years you probably know what they are) If I'm heating up, I wet it with water, wipe face, and typically tuck it around the back of neck or into the sport bras sleeves and down my back. It really helps to keep me a little cooler for a mile or 2 :thumbsup2 I think they sell shamoi type towels like this at sporting goods stores. Sponges are awesome, too and are small enough to tuck in your waistband or sports bra for ladies and they're super cheap!

I will carry a chill towel package with me in the running belt for when it gets warm. I do not want is to be to warm but i also do not want it to in 30/40's either. Start in the 50's would be nice

They passed them out at WWOS in 2013. Great idea! I trashed mine and then a couple miles later realized I should have held on to it.

That wasn't until around mile 20 though so thanks for the reminder to bring your own!

I know you said not crowded and see you from a way off but thought I'd just throw in what I did to watch a buddy in the 2013 marathon. I know it is more crowded but was so fun to be with a group of people cheering everyone on. We watched on the Canada side of the UK where you first enter Epcot (and excellent bathroom stop for the runner). Saw our buddy run a little towards us and then he made the right hand turn. We hustled over to the path to see him again running towards Spaceship Earth. for anyone that does this, you'd need to know where your runner is since there isn't much time from when you start seeing the runners.
