Impressive. I have hill profile runs that zoom up to 15 % for 8 minutes or so, but then come back.
A quick side note on breaking up a run. If you are breaking them up with a small 30-60 minute pause, you are more than likely not degrading the training effect. If you are breaking for 3-4 hours or longer, you should start to discount the mileage. There is no exact formula or science out there to give an exact guidance on the discount, I generally use a 10-20% discount on the latter run. The logic here is that the one major purpose of the long run is to create adaptations within the body so that you are pushing up the percentage of fat utilization on the run. In a high level explanation, a long break causes a reset in the fuel system.
I would also encourage you to lower the TM for you next long runs. Running on hills is a great ting for training the hams and glutes and I encourage folks to hit hills often. However, your December runs should mimic your marathon course rather than Pikes Peak. The smaller stabilizer muscles in the legs may not react favorably if your long runs are at a 11% incline then you ask them to push through 26 miles on a level course. If you are forced to a TM for you remaining, set the incline to 1-2% and run. The small incline helps offset the lack of outdoor wind friction and the motor effect.
Again, impressive distance at that incline.
Okay thanks...I am going to do it that way...I will lower the treadmill to the 1-2% and go longer from there..if I cannot go outside.
As for the breakups...I would have to deduct a bit of milage for that...I did the 9.5 miles and then came back on the tm about two hours later...did the 5 miles and change...and it was about an hour later when I did another two.
Yes it is high but in truth I live near a park - this is where I practice - and it is VERY hilly. The hills are steep and plentiful. I used this place as a practice for any race and esp the Goofy last year. However speed is another thing...no speed in this at all as it is mostly muscle training...
I just went downstairs to the basement where the tm is and lowered it from the 11.5% to 1.5%...
