Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

My comments simply called out a poster who talk bad about an athlete. The exact thing she complained about.

I think the substitutions in figure skating are quite different than White's withdrawal. Shaun White is a brand and not doing well would hurt the value of his brand. The figure skaters are not at that level at all.

So you're thinking less of him because he has a "brand" that you feel he is trying to protect? He is already competing injured, why would he put it all on the line for an event he doesn't feel his best for? Just to shut up some new kid on the block? That's like being stupid enough to being goaded into a fight because someone keeps calling you a "baby". ;)

And just like Bode Miller last time around. He ran his mouth and crashed spectacularly. If you run your mouth, you run the risk of making yourself look stupid.

Going back decades, no one was happier than me when Mike Tyson finally got a beating in the ring. I understand the point of trash talking but you can't afford to trash talk until you can back it up.

My son! Why would you think that? You're right, he didn't win but he was in the final and went for it, something Shaun White decided he wouldn't do.

So, your constant derision of White is not poor sportsmanship? Got it.

And why would I think that? You are unusually protective and taking comments about his tweeting choices personally.

If people are going to complain about poor sportsmanship, they should at least display it themselves.
A suggestion: If you are going to hold others to a certain standard, it is usually a good idea to lead by example and not participate in the very activity you are calling others out on.

I'm cheering for the red, blue and white too. Only....my version of it has a different kind of stripes (mostly diagonal) and only 7 stars. And let's not forget the unofficial sporting emblem either.

:scratchin I wonder if any Aussie will make the podium at all??

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!
o-i! o-i! o-i!

Good luck PiO!

Thanks. It's not quite like finishing Last, is it? ;)

I'm just enjoying the spectacle of the sports; not necessarily just on the TV screen. This thread has been pretty entertaining so far as well. I'm learning so much about what healthy competition can do between Dis-sers that I quite like hanging out with. And here I was thinking that Australia had the trademark on the Boxing Kangaroo.

I'm not thinking any less of White at all, he's a phenomenal athlete. I was simply pointing out a possibility for his withdrawal from this event. An event that is brand new to the Olympics and not one he is known for. Maxence Parrot is not the new kid in the event, in fact he is the second ranked rider in the world in this discipline.

I never said anything negative about White at all and I don't think Parrot needs me to protect him at all.

So I can take from your last comment, you do believe you were displaying the same lack of sportsmanship that you believed Parrot to be displaying?

And for the record, he wasn't the only athlete to question the judging this week, the gold medalist did as well.

Good try, but nope. :rotfl2:

Let it go. Don't worry so much what some of us think of Master Parrot. Don't take it so personally.

And it is a good thing I am a good sport as your continued accusations are beginning to become annoying and could be construed by a more sensitive person as a personal attack. But one just has to laugh and consider that this is the DIS.

Not taking anything personally, you are the one that mentioned an attack.

Enjoy the rest of the Games.

Team Figure Skating is new in this Olympics. It's a combination of all the different skating types, Men's, Women's, Pairs, and Ice Dancing. Each participating country puts forth two performances in each of the 4 types, both a short program and the free skate. So a total of 8 performances per country. The countries are scored normally for each event and then ranked according to those results. Then they get points, 10 for 1st place, down to 1 for 10th. After all 8 events, the point totals are added up to determine the standings.

I hope that makes sense! And by the way, these performances are completely separate from the individual events. The skater who performs for their country in say the Women's portion for example, will also perform again later in the Olympics for the actual Women's competition.

Thank you! :thumbsup2 Yes that makes sense, I read the description on Canadian Olympic site and I really didn't get it, maybe I hadn't had enough coffee :)

My Olympic channel feed is showing the team ice dancing right now. It's a replay of last night, which was early morning my time and I slept through it.

In any event, I've just watched the German couple with their Le Jazz Hot short routine. Whilst waiting for the scores to come up, they ran the slow-down replay of certain sections. Can I just say that the German couple had a lift that was replayed.....she was wearing white and she went round and round and round in slo-mo.

Yup. The Brazilian wax definitely seems to be out of vogue right now.

I see NBC see is still using the theme from Brisco County Junior as one its overlays. One of my fav music themes. :thumbsup2

who is the woman doing the commentary for the Ladies Figure Skating?

who is the woman doing the commentary for the Ladies Figure Skating?

That's Sandra bezic. She's Been doing it since NBC got figure skating.

Odd. I saw this earlier today. Tara lipinsky and jonny weir did that commentating.

:wave2: Maybe we can watch together; depending on the Aussie coverage.

NBC here doesn't show the events in real time, unless one watches their dedicated cable sports channel. One year NBC did show the Olympic events round the clock. I think they lost a lot of ratings & got complaints. People got mad that they couldn't watch their regular talk shows and soap operas. So the years after that, NBC now shows everything during the evening in Primetime hours and people just have to stay away from any news or media that will tell them the scores, until they finally get to watch.

Cute! Is the kangaroo the Aussie national animal?

They have different commentators on the different channels and depending on the time of day.

"FIGURE SKATING

Play-by-Play: Terry Gannon, Tom Hammond
Analysts: Sandra Bezic, Scott Hamilton, Tara Lipinski, Johnny Weir, Tracy Wilson
Reporter: Andrea Joyce

Awful Announcing's Take: Hammond, Bezic, Hamilton, Wilson and Joyce will be back to call figure skating and they'll be seen on NBC's primetime coverage where the network will provide features and expanded coverage of the events from earlier in the day.

Gannon, Lipinski and Weir will call the figure skating live on NBCSN during the morning coverage."

Snipped from this article which lists the commentators of all the other sports too: http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2014/january/your-2014-winter-olympics-announcing-assignments.html

If you are going to talk smack, then you had better be able to back it up. Which is why it is NEVER a good idea to talk smack...because sometimes things happen...mistakes...or some other guy is just better than you are. Then you look really foolish for running your mouth.

Now enough about those shenanigans...Kotsenberg was so much fun to watch. What a stellar job!
