Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

If you are going to talk smack, then you had better be able to back it up. Which is why it is NEVER a good idea to talk smack...because sometimes things happen...mistakes...or some other guy is just better than you are. Then you look really foolish for running your mouth.

Now enough about those shenanigans...Kotsenberg was so much fun to watch. What a stellar job!

I would say actually competing, and making it to the final is backing up your mouth.

The wrist is an excuse, the bronze medalist competed with broken ribs. Do I think it was in poor taste to talk junk about White publicly? yes. Do I feel that just because he didn't make the podium he somehow failed, and didn't back up his talk? no, because he actually competed, and made it to the final. If White wasn't going to compete he shouldn't have taken the spot in the first place, I'm sure there was another American boarder who would have loved the opportunity.

I really question the figure skating judging. While that young Russian girl was adorable, she seemed very immature on the ice, not holding some elements as long (or barely), no power in her jumps. She looked like a little kid playing among adults...and gets the highest score? Then the Japanese girl falls and still manages to get a higher score than whatserface from team USA? Then Carolina Kostner lays down a program that blew that little kid out of the water and gets 2 points LESS??

I miss the good old days of the perfect 6 and when falling on your butt meant it was over.

Time to move on.

Do you believe the rumour with the judges colluding? Seems like the judging has been pretty uneven so far.

NBC here doesn't show the events in real time, unless one watches their dedicated cable sports channel. One year NBC did show the Olympic events round the clock. I think they lost a lot of ratings & got complaints. People got mad that they couldn't watch their regular talk shows and soap operas. So the years after that, NBC now shows everything during the evening in Primetime hours and people just have to stay away from any news or media that will tell them the scores, until they finally get to watch.

Cute! Is the kangaroo the Aussie national animal?

Watching the women's figure skating "encore" now.

Yes, Kangaroo is the national animal.

But kangaroo isn't on our flag. It's the unofficial sporting flag that Alan Bond used in 1983 when we won the America's Cup.

Is there are rumor? Hadn't heard. We're only a day in so I'm not sure, personally, what to make of it...yet. I'm scratching my head about the figure skating so far (all of it, not just the women's).

:thumbsup2 The judging for figure skating in the winter and gymnastics in the summer always seem to have me shaking my head.

Me too.

I'm just watching Lipnitskaya right now. Is that who you mean?

Yep. She's adorable and has a bright future, but she just doesn't appear to measure up to the other ladies.

:scratchin I actually thought she was pretty good. She made everything look easy and flawless. About the only thing that wasn't in balance was her body shape. Nothing that a couple of years and a few more curves wouldn't fix. :duck:

okay. Her score has just come up. She was good, nearly great. But not that great for that score. Perhaps a bit of hometown favourtism, maybe.

Yeah, rub it in. :p ;)

The Aussie commentators speculated that the judges were keeping Japan in the team competition and therefore had to award marks to put her in 4th place.

Perhaps a bit of favoritism. I agree she was good. Now I am not an expert but it seemed like she did not hold some of the elements long enough.

Hannah Kearney comes up a little short on her quest to become back to back Gold Medal winner in Moguls. She gets the Bronze.

Two siblings on the podium can't have happened at the Olympics very often like it did in Moguls.

Two siblings on the podium can't have happened at the Olympics very often like it did in Moguls.

In 1984 twin brothers Phil and Steve Mahre of the US won gold and silver in one of the alpine ski events.

Too bad the third Canadian sister didn't advance to the finals of the moguls. Now THAT would have been something; the possibility of all three medals being won by siblings.

I miss the good old days of the perfect 6 and when falling on your butt meant it was over.

In 1972 Janet Lynn fell on her butt and was still awarded a 6.0 in artistic merit by one of the judges and won bronze. It wasn't like she was in first and the fall knocked her into third. I think she was in third going into the long program and the fall didn't hurt her. That was back in the days when "figure" skating meant they had to trace figures on the ice, and they were a significant part of the final score. The gold medalist built up such a huge lead in the figures that she coasted the rest of the way, finished 7th in the long program and still won gold.
