Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

I would have so gotten dizzy spinning around with those white fringe circles. I would have been booted out of rehearsal the first hour! :lmao:

I didn't like the USA's sweaters. They look like something a 55 year old teacher would wear, no offense.

This is definitely the most visually beautiful Olympic opening ceremony I have ever seen.

Spectacular.

Great job by Russia.

Coca-Cola just showed their mulch-lingual commercial of "America the Beautiful" again. They got so much flack for it, after it appeared on the Superbowl. Much of the criticism is that it's un-American as it was in different languages. Coke, sticks by the commercial saying it is real life here, showing our melting pot of cultures, with all real American citizens in the commercial and all the singers were American citizens too.

Is it just me, or does the Olympic torch not look very high? I thought the torch was supposed to be visible over (almost) the whole Olympic Village as a constant symbol to all the athletes? :confused3

Does anyone know who the young woman sitting next to Putin was? I Googled (thanks Meredith!) but didn't find much.

I thought it was okay. It was visually pleasing in parts, but it didn't move me like other opening ceremonies have in the past. Looking forward to the games!!

I loved these ceremonies! There was so much to see and it rarely dragged like so many of them do at times. Just beautiful.

I'm loving everything so far but them talking all the time. Hopefully they don't do it through the whole show.
I appreciated the talking during the team entrances but otherwise I do wish they would have kept quiet a bit more. A little explanation is fine but to go on and on... :rolleyes2

I wasn't a fan of the US outfits.

Ah...beautiful cauldron lighting!

Interesting tid bit showing up on the internet about the figure skater who lit the cauldron. That she had posted a racist photo about President Obama back in September.

Bing Search probably has the answer. :lmao: I thought it had to be his daughter or niece (if he has one.) At least she smiled throughout the whole event. Putin seems to only have two expressions: somber and dour. He probably has a third expression for when he's about to press the button on a nuclear attack. But, hopefully, no one will ever see that expression.

I have seen this a lot on social media. Makes me wonder if it's the ceremony itself of the history going into these games. Maybe some of both.

I absolutely think that has something to do with it.....at least for me it does.

Okay?

I was referring to the way the flame went up and the fireworks and such.

I don't think she was referring to your comment specifically, just about the cauldron lighter in general.

As for the U.S. team's jackets, I can see why people would think they look like Christmas sweaters, or old lady sweaters, but this season's fashion trend is print on print. apparently, the more the better. I think this is R. Lauren's interpretation of it by using all American symbols.

Hmmm.....Time Zone differences have meant that Melbourne time right now of about 4.40 pm equates to 9.40 am in Sochi.
That probably means I need to be up till 4 am in the morning to watch the figure skating. I think I'll be watching repeats of it rather than staying up.

I'm watching the snowboarding right now. I'm expecting that Australian coverage will be different to US coverage; although if it is live, we may be looking at the same picture feed.

Of the Opening ceremony uniforms, I liked Germany the best.

Hi PIO! :wave2:

I usually just watch the figure skating.

:wave2: Maybe we can watch together; depending on the Aussie coverage.

I try to watch the skiing as well. I must say that I'm enjoying the snowboarding that's on right now.
