Official 2014 Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k Thread!

I'm bummed to miss the HM because it is different from the one in WDW, it was closed 2 years ago when I ran the DL half and I actually considered adding a couple more days to my vacation because it closes right before I get there :( HM is one of my favorites and I really love the Holiday overlay.

They always close HM right around the time of the DL Half for the Halloween overlay. And they always put it back down to tack it off right around the time of the now Star Wars Half to take it off (I remember this because it was never up when Tink was being run on its old weekend, now the Star Wars runners have to deal with it being down). It's one of the suckiest timings if you come in for a race. It wasn't until I got my AP last year that I finally got to start riding HM again because I always seemed to be at the parks when the darn ride was down for the Halloween refurb one way or the other.

On a different note. I did a training run where I was actually able to gradually increase my pace from start to finish. That's a first for me. Really hoping I don't get too caught up in race hype and can pull that off at the Disneyland half portion of the DDD. Because I went from an opening split of 12:48 to a 12:25 overall for my 10k training run. And I still think I had something left in the tank (questionable, but hey I could always go to GU if need be). Imagine what I could do with more distance if I kept picking up speed. And this was after doing a 5k in the morning.

Need some advice from all you experienced runners out there.

Yesterday during my morning run I suddenly started having pain in my... hmm... lower left rear end... :headache:

After doing some very scientific research on the internet :rolleyes1 on what it might be, I'm thinking I may have somehow hurt my left piriformis.

So I started doing some stretches, and I'm using a tennis ball to massage the area (which, btw, OUCH!).

Any other advice on what I can do to make sure I can actually do the race on 8/31 and maybe also complete my training? I was supposed to do a run tomorrow (I do a run twice during the week) and a long run on the weekend. Not sure if I should skip a few just in case. It's not hurting now, but I don't know how long it may take to get that muscle back to handling a run.

Thanks!!!! :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

Well done! That must feel good this close to race day.

I think the only way I could increase my pace towards the end of a run is if I ran off a cliff.

Just keep doing the stretching and massaging and maybe throw in some icing. If it's not hurting then maybe skip tomorrow's run and give it a test run in a couple days? Or maybe even give it a go tomorrow. Hope it's just a minor tweak and you're back out there soon.

Alright...I'm going to be that jerk that asks about next year's DLH weekend even though this year's hasn't happened yet. :goodvibes

It's always Labor Day weekend, right? Normally in the rD programs they'll publish next year's dates, so I was expecting to get confirmation for September 4-7, 2015, but it's not there...hmmmm. Any thoughts on this?

Also, to everyone that is running in DL in just a few weeks...have a GREAT time! :yay:

i realize they do this every year (taken HM down). but i really wish they would figure out a different timing so that it wasn't closed during race weekends. we'll miss it by two days, but there is no way we can come in any earlier.

i'm glad that it looks like Matterhorn won't be down since we are east coasters and always visit WDW. this visit will be our first to DL.

i've been dealing with knee pain lately. i tweaked it a few weeks back and thought it was okay, but then it started acting up last week during a run (which i then cut short). i was supposed to do a 12.5 mile long-run this weekend, but only did 10.55 (and took it slowly--stopped to stretch). i had a light compression sleeve for my knee but bought a Level 2 one yesterday. i will walk the DL races if i must, but i'm hoping it all feels better by the race weekend. i'm thinking i may just walk the 10k though, to take it easier on my knees.

I am not a medical expert, but I have always found that lots of stretching and epsom salt baths seems to work away odd pains that develop. Were you running differently when it occurred (longer, faster, different shoes or terrain)? I used to get this odd hip soreness (not quite a pain) that I lasted for months, but it eventually went away through stretching and just running more...

Going to keep stretching/massaging, will take it very easy on tomorrow's run. I do foam roller after every run, will do it daily and hope it helps. Pain seems to be receding, but won't really know until I use that muscle for running again. Still feels sore, though.

Run itself was normal. Same running shoes, same route. However, I did a "speed" workout on Saturday, as per the training plan. It likely set me up for bad run/muscle pain on yesterday's run. I hate speed workouts... Not doing them again until after DLH (or probably ever!!).

Tonight is yoga class, which I do at least once a week. That should help. I keep wondering if I would have gotten that pain if I hadn't skipped Sunday's class.

Thank you for your advice! I will keep at it with stretching and massaging, take it easy for the week and see where it goes. :goodvibes

Hi Everyone! I'm in a bit of a hotel crisis (I know, it sounds like a total rookie mistake.)

Long story short, my bf and I are without a room for Saturday night. I usually stay at Hilton, and have no prob getting a room there, but I slacked and now every hotel I'm familiar with is booked. Can anyone offer advice on The Annabella hotel? Apparently it's the only hotel left within walking distance...

Thank you thank you!

I've not stayed there, but the reviews don't look too bad. I say book it!

I adore Anabella. I've had good experiences there. I'm jealous you're getting to stay there! I book through hotels.com because we have some free nights, and Anabella has been sold out with them for ages now.

I'm staying at Ramada Plaza (which is walking distance...though a much longer walk) because Anabella was gone when I went to book it. (can't recall why I didn't go for Hilton, but it might have been actual types of rooms not being available)

This is a really neat article! http://www.clifbar.com/article/disneyland-half-marathon-course-preview

Also, hey, there will be Clif Bar pace teams there. Some people have said that they were only doing full marathons, but Disney seems to be a special case.

We were just looking for that info as well. It seems Labor Day is a bit later next year, so those are the same dates we came up with. I believe it will be the 10 year Anniversary of the Disneyland Half next September (2015).

Yep! That's why I'm trying to plan things out now. Registration will be crazier than normal!

I just finished our outfits for the 10k, what do you guys think? Of course we'll be wearing Dis green! I'll bet there will be a lot of hula skirts out there for the 10k.

:goodvibes eeeee, just booked our walk in walt's footsteps tour for the day after the race. with that, i think i'm fully planned and ready to go!

i've never done a proper tour the day after a race, but have always gone to the parks and done them as usual with no issues, just a lot of hobbling, but i'm a little nervous about keeping up with the tour!

Thanks for posting that article. It was a good course description. I'm looking forward to this race!

I was thinking about trying to follow a pace group to keep myself on target, but they're all in such early corrals. The 3:00 pace group is in Corral E, but I'm in Corral H with a proof of time near 3:00.

Yeah this makes no sense at all. Most of the people in those corrals will be running <2:00 so I don't know why they stuck the 2:30 and 3:00 teams in there.

Thanks for the link! I don't know if it's different in the States vs. Canada, but there are a few half-marathons I run regularly that have Clif Bar pacers. I don't usually run with them, but they look well organized! Last year I fell short of my goal at one race and got passed by the pace team at the 12 mile mark. It was a little heartbreaking!

They might have some typos? It also says 1:50 will be Corral B MIDDLE and 2:00 will be Corral B FRONT, which would be backwards - plus the cutoff time for Corral A was 1:55.
