Official 2012 Wine and Dine ½ Marathon Thread

Ok, I've down loaded the course map, now all I need to do is map it on my ifit program and I'll be good to go! I'm so anxious to get started,:upsidedow on my training, which I had to postpone due to having surgery on my left knee. I wonder when they will have the Disneyland half's course on the website??:confused3

Glad you posted this! I haven't registered DD yet, but I don't want to wait too long now that it is 50% full!

Hi everyone!

Happy to say hello to all of you - I registered on Day 1, like many, but I usually spend my time on the cruise board. At that time, I was driving down with 1 or 2 girlfriends, but now it looks like I may be on my own.

Don't know if this is usually done, but would anyone be up for a random roommate? I'm 34, married with a DS9, a high-school French teacher, and this is my first 1/2 (although I've been running for close to 18 mos now). I'm hoping to drive down from ATL on the 9th and head home on the 11th.

I'd be up for any any of the OP Moderate resorts, possibly looking into buying DVC points (trying to keep my room cost to under $400, if possible). PM me if you're interested. :)

Still debating. Want to run this (it's a few weeks after my 30th birthday) but as usual the price freaks me out, especially with two weddings the following summer I should be saving up money for.

Planning on running the 5K and half this year! A little worried about running in the evening - but excited to run at Disney again! :)

I've been trying to decide if I should sign up. I've never done a 1/2 and just completed my first 5k last week. I think physically I can handle the training and have enough time. But here are my concerns...

cost. a weekend looks like its going to cost as much as my week long trip last year.
running at night. will i be able to stay up??
end of the food and wine festival - i don't want to miss it, but can my body handle spending the thurs or fri before the race walking around epcot?

anyone have any advice? is this race worth it over the other ones?

I too just did my first 5k a few weeks ago, too, and this will also be my first half marathon. Since it's gotten hot and humid out, I'm kind of thinking that a race at night without the hot, unyielding sun will be nice. Plus, in terms of the cost I like having the added after party. I'm signed up for the marathon in January which cost the same but didn't come with that with additional perk.

The cost... well... yeah. Overall, it's not particularly affordable. It depends on what you're comfortable spending--I started running so I could do the Disney races, so for me this is a reward for doing the work. That the registration is non-refundable is an added incentive to show up and run.

I am doubly excited b/c not only are we going to be running the Wine and Dine half, but the hubs and I are going to the Very Merry Christmas Party as well!! I've never been, I've always wanted to go, and I can't WAIT to see it snow on Main Street!! Oh and Holiday Wishes!!! So so so excited!! :cool1:

Anyone have any good tips for race day schedule for a night race? I've only done the early morning start and want to make sure I'm ready. When do you eat? Do you take a nap and just lay low all day? My Mom and I are running together and are contemplating Mickey's Christmas Party at MK the night before...are we nuts?

thanks!

It depends what you are wanting to do. If you are going for a PR in the race, then obviously don't go to the party and take it easy all day. But, if you are there for the events and don't care about your time, then you could definitely go to the party and live it up all weekend long.

Last year I let my friends and wife talk me into the 5k the morning of the race and we also went to MNSSHP the night before. My legs really starting to become angry with those decisions at about mile 7. I finished fine, but about 10 minutes later than the time I was shooting for.

As far as eating, we have found that eating lunch around 12:30 or so and a nap afterwards works out well. The first year we ate at 2pm and that was too late for me, but this will be different for everyone. I personally like to eat, nap and then be able to have a small snack before catching the bus to the start line.

Hi all! I am in. This will be my 3rd W&D. I debated skipping it this year cause we have so much stuff going on this fall, but this is my favorite race and I didn't want to miss it. Still not sure if Mike is going to come along as well.

I think this is a very mentally challenging race (the whole late night, warm temps, etc stuff) but running through the parks at night is so fun! And I love running past BW/BC on the way to the finish. :goodvibes

Looking forward to meeting some new folks. Last year at a meet at DTD it was just me, Mike and Courtney (are you around this year Courtney?) so hoping to meet some other Dissers.:goodvibes

As for the question about eating--what works for us is a big breakfast around 10:00 and then a snack around 3:00. We usually have cheese, hard boiled eggs and hummus in our room or we might have ice cream. I try to not overdo it on the walking on the day of the race and in the late afternoon we usually park it somewhere and watch a football game or go somewhere to people watch. Something that involves sitting. I am not a good napper, but sitting and relaxing seems to help. We met people at the BW pool bar who were having beers the afternoon of the race--I worry too much about dehydration--but they were definitely relaxed! :thumbsup2

Mike will eat a banana right before the race and last year I had a Lara bar. The big thing is to stay hydrated during the day. Disney does not sell gatorade on property, so if you want gatorade during the day you need to bring your own in. I am not a fan of powerade.

I am really hoping the change in dates will mean awesome running temps.:goodvibes

Ordered Finish Line Party Tickets for my parents and they've already come in the mail! Now I just have to find somewhere to put them that I'll remember :)

I just booked the BC for DH and I! We are arriving Nov.7 and heading home on the 11th. This will be our first Disney race and our first trip without the kids :)

DH and myself will be signing up this week. This will be our first night time race and are super excited!

Just signed up DD20 for the race. She did a full marathon last May and is so excited to run a half at Disney. We did EE one year and the 1st Princess 5K so it will be fun to do another race together (assuming that she wants to keep my pace)

Side note- I ran 4 miles yesterday for the first time, ever, i think. Kept a 10:07 pace. Then walked for 2 miles. I was really excited to complete just about 1/2 of the half....so, I really feel like I am on my way.

I think my sister and I are registering for the race this weekend.

Does anyone know how discounted the "specially priced" theme park tickets are via the W&D online ticket store?

-Michael

It's decent - compared to pricing on Undercover Tourist (good discount place online) you save anywhere from 20-30% depending on the number of days. Just remember these do expire and you have to use them within two weeks of the event.

They're discounted very nicely. For example, a discounted 2 day park hopper is $134.19 (tax already included). A regularly priced 2 day park hopper is $223 pre-tax...$237.50 with tax. So you're looking at just over a $100 savings right there. I'm sure that the savings vary as you compare days, but IMO the discounted tickets are worth it. When you register, you'll be given a link to be able to purchase tickets and you'll be able to see the prices.
