Another question: with the upcoming TAX FREE weekend in SC in the next few days, Im considering purchasing a new pair of sneakers. I went to Fleet Feet today and was given some suggestions. As a new runner, how much of a difference will $100+ sneakers make? If it means an injury is prevented...Im there!

I would get fitted. I didn't do that last year and wound up injured. Just make sure that they have a good return policy, as it might take a pair or two before you find the ones that work for you.

The good thing is, once you find a make/model that you like, then you can usually find them online for cheaper when you need new ones.

I see an ankle and foot doctor b/c of bad ankles due to riding horses when I was younger. He recommends the asics gt series to his patients (for running and everyday use). I've been wearing them for the last 4 years and they have helped me a lot. Of course I also used super feet in them for the past 3.5 years and now I have custom othotics. If you can find the gt-2150s online in your size they are around $50-65 right now since they came out iwth the 2160s recently.

For those that have done the princess before, how do you carry your camera? I was thinking since I use my iphone for the interval app and music I could use that but Im afraid the pictures will not turn out good.

I am a big believer of do everything on race day the way you train or do other races....hats, glasses, equipment, etc. I use my Iphone app for my intervals. I don't think I would like to deal with using it also for photos, SO I will carry my pocket camera with the strap around my wrist. If it gets cumbersome I can put it in my spibelt. Heaven forbid I go to take a picture and mess up my interval app or my music....which I keep low, but its on for the boring stretches.

What intervals do you use?
I have always done 2/1 intervals and my fastest time ever was 2:36. Years ago, but same intervals I do now.

Well, I signed up for the half marathon a few weeks ago, but now I have air reservations and resort reservations made, and it's really feeling real!

Cate

I signed up last week and am BEYOND excited! It's my first half-marathon (ran my first 10K in May) and am hoping to finish under 2 1/2 hours. My hubby will be supporting me from the sidelines - he's gonna love getting up super early ;)

WELCOME PRINCESSES! You will love this race.

Had to share - just had my last PT appt and she is confident I can work up to a half by Thanksgiving! If I can get that under my belt and see my "real" time, then I will feel a lot more relaxed about the Princess - stopping for pics every 5 minutes and not really caring about time - as long as I stay ahead of the sweeper!!!!

Yay for healing! Enjoy your training for the half!

Sparkle skirt questions:

So if I'm doing cinderella for my princess, would I do the pale blue sparkle skirt? There are 3 blue ones on their website but Im thinking it looks the closest to the blue of cinderella

Also how are the sizing on these skirts? According to their chart Im on the border between two sizes, should I go to the bigger size?

Lastly, what do wear under it? Will regular running shorts be okay?

I wore a team sparkle last year over my under armor shorts. I love them because you can wear them over whatever ....if its cold, I could wear over my capris or leggings and in the heat perfect over short. They are VERY lightweight. I would email them and ask what they think. Ran true to size for me. As for Cinderella, I think that pale blue would be perfect.

The right shoes make all the difference. Get fitted. The wrong shoes and long distances are a recipe for injury and pain! You don't really need much to run....so get the shoes that will work for you. I also wear Super Feet inserts in my shoes because of a foot problem. Its worth the $$.

I wear the gt-2150s too. I love them. I have wide flat feet - basically no arches, and am about 50 lbs overweight (was 70 but am down 20 in the last 8 weeks!). The more overweight you are, the more likely you will need stability or motion control shoes.

Because I have extra weight + flat feet + overpronate, I need motion control for sure. I checked with my sports med doctor as well as the store that fitted me for the 2150s, and they said no orthotics were needed.

My lack of the right shoes and/or orthotics for my issue directly led to a stress fracture in my shin last year.

I am at about 285 miles so far this year and just switched to my 2nd pair, and no shin issues! :)

Its not always about the money. I spent $130 on running shoes last year and ended up with a stress fracture in my heel and Plantar facitis. Its all about finding the right shoe for your foot. the only way to find that is to go to a running store and get fitted for what works with your stride, gait, landing pattern, etc. With that being said, I've recently switched to the Mizuno Prophecy and I'm in love. The technology in the shoe is amazing. great support/contol and keeps legs feeling fresh longer. Sure they are super super expensive st $200/pair , but after what I've spent on doctors to heal from my running injuries, I'd rather pay more for the shoe than for more doc appointments.

On their facebook page they mentioned some shorts target sells that are more of a spandex type fit. If I jump on the sparkle skirt bandwagon (which I'm hoping to do once DH gets a job,) I'll probably wear that type of short underneath. My running skirts I do have come with the spandex type compression shorts build in.

I wear asics 2160 and LOVE them ... i initially bought a pair of nike (through my local running store) ... it was between the nike and asics. After a week I hated the nikes. the running store (Luke's Locker - yeah!!!) allowed me to swap them out. what a difference!! I love the asic 2160s!!

I have 2160s too and I love them as well :goodvibes I found out the hard way my feet only want Asics after I had to return a pair of NBs. I started having pain in my heels and it went away almost immediately after I switched back to good ol' Asics. At least now I can save the running store people time in the shoe storage room.

Unless you're an extreme case (my mom being one of them with her severe arthritic issues) orthodics will actually ruin the fit/support of a shoe...so it's definitely a "proceed with caution" type venture if you want to go that route

I'm also a huge fan of the stability shoe - I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum on the underweight/healthy weight borderline (although full marathon training always pushes me to the healthy weight border, no matter what I always gain weight when my mileage goes over 30 miles/week) with very narrow, flat feet - the asics 2160s have been my shoe since it's been the 1000s series. I pronate so badly that I probably could use a motion control shoe...but since I am so tiny, I'm in the stability since the motion control would be "too much shoe" for me. So don't blame your weight entirely for your gait!

Also and speaking of not having the world's greatest gait - I do believe the longer you stick with running, your body will adapt to your imperfections. One of my main issues is that I can NEVER hold my left foot straight when I push off of it. Been working on it for years....it just doesn't happen. I had alot of problems with injuries when I first started running, but I've been running consistently for 3 and a half years now. I don't think my gait has changed significantly (although of course I do the best that I can) but I just think my body has adapted to running. Sure I get minor aches and pains every so often...but I just think that comes with the territory of pushing your body's limits.

I have a Droid 2 and would like to utilize it while running. I do not have any music loaded on it, any suggestions of what App for that? More importantly, I am interested in a good run/walk interval App and am willing to pay for something decent. Anybody have any suggestions?

I use runkeeper on my iphone and I love it, but I know they have an android app. You can set up your own intervals on the app, or you can download their "fitness classes" including Galloway training programs. They cost a little money, but save you the time of programming in all the intervals.

Congrats on starting running!

I use HIIT Interval training. It is free and works *great*.

For music I just use the music player that came with it.

RunKeeper is great for the GPS/map/pace tracking.

You can run all three at once even on my waaaay older model Android phone. :goodvibes

thanks for all the advice on good phone programs. Hoping to find one I enjoy and can easily use. I do like running to pandora (even though it has commercials) because I get a new variety every time I run but keep the same type of song/beat.

I did it today.....hit the submit button for the registration and booked my room at SSR! Now to get plane tickets and I will be all set.

That would be me!! My doctor and I tried everything before going the custom orthodic route and nothing was working over the last 5 years. My 2 pg being so close together (only 6 months non-pg between the 2) really just put the icing on the cake. Thankfully my orthodics have helped me be able to run more and is allowing me to do the princess.

What better place to run your first 1/2 marathon.. So excited.. I've been lurking around this thread for a few days now and decided to pop in and say hi... Looking forward to Disney, I'v never been. :cool1:

WELCOME! You are going to LOVE WDW. Last year, it was a bit unseasonably warm, not hot but a nice change from even cold GA winter! This race has so much entertainment and lots of people on the side supporting and cheering you on.

Happy Training.
