Might have to look into these....I have been using the Brooks Ravenna with no major probs, but always had a nagging soreness in left leg and a perpetually tight calf. This has finally caught up with me - my training lately has been spotty at best and last week I did NO mid-week runs, but ran a 10K on Saturday at race pace. PAIN! Went to doc this am and he feels it's shin splints. Wanted to rule out stress fracture; he didn't do x-rays but based on where it hurts, this is what he is going with. Also mentioned my left foot seems a little flatter than the other. Referred me to a PT to make sure there are no other issues causing the shin splints, so I'm sure I'll have the shoe convo with the PT. I really hope I can stick with these, since my most recent pair are still new enough to be pretty! The good news is, after a rest & ice, he cleared me to still run the P'tree on July 4th! However, I fear I'll do the same thing again - not really run much next week, and then head out for the 10K! But I already warned the hubs that we're taking this one easy! After that, I can take a bit of a break, do laps in the pool, and still have time to *properly* train for the Princess. Hey - my first running-related injury - I feel like a "real" athlete, now!!!:rotfl:

Hey I run in the Asics 2150s and Jackie was in 2160s.. ;-) I am thinking with my issues to get re-evalutated for shoes at Phidippides. When I ran years ago, I was an overpronator and I never had issues like I do know...BUT I have aged! When they analyzed me at BP, didn't come up...not that I am saying its their fault...as when the PF hit me, it was after that snow storm that had us all snowed in for like 10 days! You know if you keep your miles low I think you can do ok with your shoes until they wear out. Or you can use them for walking around to support your feet. I have Superfeet in my shoes - recommended by Chris C. The doc and my PT said that was a good idea, so you might want to check them out after the race....don't you love how I just spend your $$ for you!

Someone posted in another thread about Run/walkers being "non-serious" runners....I have not posted, but man, I am not fast and yeah, I do intervals. Did a 1/2 with an injury and took forever to finish....I think that is about as serious as one can get!;)

2 things....

1. I am trying to get back into running but my lingering Plantar faciitis just won't go away. Plus my ankle is now tight and pops when I point and flex. I am going back to the doctor since this has been going on since January but wondering if anyone has an experience with Tendonitis can chime in and say, "Yep that popping ankle is a sign". I really miss my running! When I am out there doing it I feel great, but afterwards not so fun, though I will say its MUCH better than it was and usually the next day after a short run, all is well. I am doing a 10K on the 4th of july and honestly plan on walkling alot as its so hilly, but know afterwards I am also going to get someone to reevalutate my shoes.

2. POST RACE CELEBRATION
So the 180 window of reservations is approaching and wondering where everyone is thinking of doing the post race celebratory meal. Last year we did a late lunch at Akerhus which was fun with our medals and the princesses. This year thinking of trying to get into Le Cellier. What are you thinking? Yeah, my foot has me bummed so thinking of some fun things about the race like the fun meal with friends and your medals afterwards.

I just started Galloway's 1/2 plan last night. I still can't imagine 13.1 miles!:scared1:

Way to go! I have successfully completed 3 1/2s and have always been the "I am not a runner person". I find as you add distance you just fall into that groove with your run/walk ratio. Its seems so weird and honestly I still can't believe I did the 3 I have done, but if you just follow the program it works.

Congrats!

I'm in 2150s too. I find I can get about 200 miles out of them, but I was 220-230 lbs through most of those miles - working my way down the scale now!

As to run/walk = non-serious, they can talk to some of the folks in my Galloway group that do 6:25 magic miles and 4 hr marathons and use intervals. Also, strap 50-70 lbs to some of those "serious" and "fast" runners and get back to me on how they like it. :)

Well I'm around 102 lbs, and I wear asics 2160s...and I can get maybe 250 miles on them if I'm lucky. And when you are running 30ish miles a week, it goes by rather fast. I think it has to do less with your weight, and more with your foot strike - and since I'm a terrible over-pronator, I wear through mine very fast.

Agree that very speedy people can do the run/walk. I find it too regimented for me personally (and I can only dream of a 4 hour marathon...I'm hoping for 4:20-4:30 this year!) but I've heard of people even getting 3:30 or faster marathons out of the run/walk. I think you have to find what works best for you, and be very proud of the fact that you are getting out there at all - whether you run a 15 min mile, 10 min mile, or 7 min mile...just think less than 1% of the population has completed a half marathon or a full marathon. I know when a bunch of runners get together we tend to get hung up on speed, but sometimes you just need to step back and realize what you are doing and how awesome it is :)

Good to know on the 2150/60. I thought it was just me. I am also a heavy over-pronator. When I first got them, I got blisters on my insteps and inner heels.

As to the rest... absolutely agree. :goodvibes

Really, seriously....in the disboards forum....

I would challenge most Of the running population to keep up with Galloway o his run interval. He is jogging at a 6-7 minute pace. He has changed to a 1:1 ratio. There was no way that I could stick with him and needed to run my race. For the record, he passed me in the W&D and I passed him in the Marathon. That is until he caught me later.

I have an evening 5k race tomorrow and I've never ran at night before....

I normally run around 9am and on a fairly empty stomach. We are early dinner eaters, around 5:30pm or so. The race is at 6:30pm. Should I just have a light lunch and then nothing until after the race?

By the way it is going to be 70 and sunny and a gorgeous run through one of my favorite parks and they will have a TON of hot air balloons filled for us to run past! Super excited, just not sure about the stomach part....

thanks for any advice!

I usually run on an empty stomache (if running in morning) --- or a partially empty stomache (early light ... light ...) if running after work. I am sure I will re-think my eating for the half - and even for longer training runs (right now up to 4.5 miles). But I do know what you mean!

The weather and sites sound perfect for a 5K ... ENJOY!!:)

1. I've had issues with tendinitis in my achilles off and on for over 20 years from problems with pointe shoe ribbons being too short. I've never had a popping issue in my ankle due to that, but that doesn't mean it isn't what's causing yours. That being said, my ankles do go through periods where they pop every time I walk on them but they don't feel any different when that happens.

2. I only did the 5K last year for Princess weekend, but we celebrated with dinner at Akershus and loved it. I really like the idea of a Princess meal either to kick off the weekend or to celebrate finishing.

Yes and it struck a nerve with me because I am a Galloway gal and slow - so I remember it. But to be fair I don't they were intending to be mean about it it was kind of casually thrown in saying that run/walkers and walkers were "non-serious" runners related to wave placement for races. Just because you are in the back, doesn't mean you aren't serious. I think it was just a poor choice of words - not meant to be putting anyone down and I need to let it go.

I think sometimes we slow people - whether runners, run/walkers or walkers fall to the feeling of "I am not really a runner", and we need to just be proud of what we are doing and trying to stay healthy. This past year I was finally able to embrace my pace and style and not feel like I was any less than the fastest finisher despite my slowest half finish ever...but I was so proud that I did it despite alot of obstacles.

Thanks for your wise words!

I'm also doing Galloway's plan, but my question is this:

During my short runs, 30-35 min I run the whole time. During my long runs, I'm planning on running for the first 30ish minutes then doing intervals for the rest. Next week I'll be up to 6.5 miles and I did my 5 mile week twice (once at a 4:1, and once running for about 25-30min and finished at a combo of 1:1, and 2:1)

I like the idea of being able to run the first 5 or 6 miles of a half marathon and then falling into a ratio run/walk. This is my first half, I havn't quite found my groove with intervals, I'm just pretty much going with what feels good on the day. But what I'd like to know, before I get into really long runs, is my plan/hope of running for 30 minutes on my long runs (and eventually increasing) then falling into a walk run ratio a good idea? Or should I really be doing a ratio for my whole long run?

I wanted to add to the discussion about this: If you read Galloway's book he says just the opposite for races. For each distance he talks about doing the intervals (and these intervals can be more running than you are doing during your long training runs) and then he tells you that you can run as much as you like at a certain point in the race to the end. I think for a 5K this is the last mile. Not sure what he says for the half.

I would do long runs with all intervals. This will help you get your long runs longer and longer easier, without injury. Look up what Galloway's interval recommendations are for your intervals based on pace. And do whatever you want during short runs to keep up your straight running. Or as someone said, just work up to running the whole way if you can.

If I run at night I usually eat a couple of rice cakes with peanut butter & banana around 2 hours before the start time - that way I'm not full but my stomachs not growling & I have enough energy to get round!

I may be in for this...I just started running, but I love the thought of doing a 1/2 at Disney!!!

You can do it Taryn! I just started running at the end of May doing C25K too. My goal is to do the Princess 1/2. Check out the videos of it on YouTube and you will so totally want to do it!

I started running last year in July and finished the princess. It was so much fun! Totally worth all the training. You can do it. Enjoy!

If you love Disney, and have a desire to run a 1/2, Disney is definitely the place to do it. Happy Training to everyone starting C25k!

Thanks for all the encouragement. I have a group of about 8-10 friends who are all talking about it so it looks like I may be training for my first 1/2 Marathon. Did those words actually just come out of my mouth ?!?!?!?!?
