Official 2012 Princess 1/2 marathon thread part 2

I was able to get 9 miles in today and felt really good. I kept moving around the rest of the day (I had to work) and I'm really not too sore or tight. I'm going to try for one more long run before the race before starting to cut back down.

Is anyone else using kinesio tape? I used some on my left knee (I'm having popliteal issues due to lose/weak ligaments in that knee) and felt amazing during my run today. Just wondering if anyone else was using it also =)
I use kt tape. I have used it for itbs, tendonitis in my foot, p-f, and currently have a piece on my ankle for a strain. If applied right, I think it can do wonders. My therapist showed me how to put it on, but there are videos online. I just finished going to p-t for lots of problems in my right foot, including the ankle strain. The strain was pretty bad, so I imagine I will be running with the kt tape on for awhile. I think the big benefit for me, is that it helps keep the inflammation down and things heel better.

My knee did the same thing after my 11 mile run on Dec. 28. It has slowly been improving, but I've had to reduce my milage on my long runs since then.
I did 7.7 last Wednesday, and hope to increase up to 12 about 2 weeks before the Princess. I'm getting frustrated with how long it's taking to improve. I've also been running a lot slower than I had been, trying to remind myself I just need to beat 16mm. Do you have to see a PT to learn how to tape your knee? Of course, keeping up with 3 kids and a full time job on my feet all day on ceramic tile doesn't help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are several different ways to tape your knee. You should see a PT who has experience with the method to evaluate how your knee cap moves and if it is offtrack taping can help to realign it along with strengthening exerices so that eventually you won't need to tape. Unfortunately sports medicine hasn't been my scope of practice so I'm not really familiar with them.

Wow, you guys are doing great!

I was going to do 10 today, but decided to do 5 instead as this week still feeling my knee and calves and foot. It was a good decision as while it wasn't horrible, boy did i feel off! Just salving up with my Blue Emu and Arnica! Also did 30 minutes of stretch relaxation Yoga with my daughter who is 5.....man, my left leg TIGHT. Felt good though despite the face 20 minutes in she starts saying "MOM, THIS IS BORNING! " :confused3:rotfl:

Will go for 10 this weekend....My 9 miler went well 2 weeks ago, so I have faith! I wish I could use KT tape, my feet are sweaty or something as I can't get it to stay on.

Now the all important working on of the outfit.....its gonna be good I think, putting it together this week.

If you have a pic of your, go ahead and post it. Its great running on the course and recognizing a DISer!

See all the pictures from Tinkerbell runners on my facebook is getting me super excited for princess now (not that I wasn't before .)
I can't wait to hit up the expo without hubby in tow as well and actually do some shopping!

I have to say that I'm so inspired by everyone getting their runs in and sticking to their training till the end. I've been such a bump on a log since Disney at the beginning of the month. I've run thirteen miles in the last two weeks, and that was a 1/2 marathon last weekend. I'm hoping to get back on track this week and be ready to run a decent 1/2 for me in a few weeks.

Going to run 11 miles today on the treadmill. This is where I was back in October when my stress fracture occurred. I would love to do this outside, but I'm trying to stay as healthy as I can and running on the TM is much better on my ankle. I'll run a 10K outside on Wednesday as it's going to be 67 degrees here.

I'm also experimenting this morning. Instead of just having my greek yogurt, I also added some Kashi cereal with vanilla soy milk. This is what I plan on having the morning of the race so I wanted to see if it bothered my stomach. I also bought Shot Blox and will try to add that mid-way through my run.

Has anyone seen the necklace from the Tinkerbell Half?? Is there a picture?? I'm really curious about the one for the Princess!!!!

Julie--have you tried wiping rubbing alcohol over the area that you are applying the tape to? If I have any lotion on (even a tiny bit) or used soap with lotion it won't stick. I also don't apply right before a run. Use the paper part of the tape to rub the tape on. The heat is supposed to help make it stick. And last, there are different brands, so it might be worth trying another brand. Sometimes mine will stick for days, sometimes just through a workout. Once or twice it's come off during a workout.

It really helped with the tendonitis in my ankle and foot. I was so tight I could barely pull my foot back.

Also, you have probably tried this, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Have you tried a strassburg sock? It took about 2 weeks for me to see results, but I swear by it. I don't wear it every night now, but most nights. After long runs, I will leave it on during the day if I am doing a lot of sitting. My foot was such a mess last fall I could barely walk and while not perfect, it is doing so much better.

I've got a non-Disney race report. I did a half marathon locally yesterday. I was GREAT until mile 5-6 and I just slumped. My time stank, I was walking a lot, I starting thing... WHY am I DOING this! I HATE this! Too long, too long, too long....

That's when I realized what was missing. The CASTLE! LOL Right at the time I was bonking and getting down, I cheered up knowing that in a month, it will be MK time. That will totally get me through to mile 7!

In my race yesterday I picked it back up from 7-8, then 9 was struggling with my right calf. By 10 it was over as far as any running- my calf was seizing up if I ran farther than 10 feet. Redonkulous. I felt GREAT everywhere else and thought I would make it in around 3 hours.... but it was not meant to be. I ended up walking the final 5K.

That was a bummer, but I was happy with the race over all. Knowing that I will have the castle and characters as inspiration will make the next one better!

Anyone have an idea on why ONE calf muscle would freak out when I ran, but not when I walked? I was well hydrated and electrolyted and felt good everywhere else. My magical Zenzah calf sleeves couldn't stop the freak out either. Sniff. I was so sad. I even tried to run through the finish line and COULDN'T! That sucked.

Has anyone seen the necklace from the Tinkerbell Half?? Is there a picture?? I'm really curious about the one for the Princess!!!!

I've seen pictures of both pins, but not pictures of the necklace yet. I'm really curious too and would love to see what I ordered!

I feel like a slacker. It's now been 3 weeks and the longest run for us has been a 6 mile mostly walk through the snow. The weather looked great for this weekend to get an 11mile in but that darn Lake effect snow ruined the whole weekend.
We only did 4 miles on the treadmill.
Please tell me we will still be ok for the Princess as far as training?? We are trying to get another long run outside in. If this week still looks bad weather wise I guess we'll just suck it up and run 10m on the treadmill.

You all have been doing a great job!!

It sounds like you just had one BAD run, since your other distance runs were going so much better. It's enormously frustrating to have a bad run, and I know it makes me question my ability to run at all when I have one. Other than trying to analyze any differences before your bad run and normal runs, such as the amount of sleep you got or your hydration before the run, sometimes I guess you just have to chalk it up to being a bad run and look forward to the next one being better. Easier said that done when you've just had such a hard time, but it does pass. Pixie dust for your next runs! :grouphug:

Tabetha, you know you can do it, I will wave as you pass me, :cheer2:

Thanks ladies. You're right, I've GOT this. I will just focus and work hard on my conditioning runs the next few weeks. My period started during my run, so I have a feeling that played a role in the whole shebang.

I'm excited, too, cause we're finishing our contract on the ship this weekend, so we will be running on LAND starting Feb 5. No more treadmills - we'll have scenery! Hooray. Plus we're spending a week at WDW as soon as we get off the ship! Double Hooray!

I finally got in a 5 1/2 mile run after being under the weather the last four days. Despite being sluggish, I thought I could go a lot longer. So, last run will be on Wednesday followed by a long hiking vacation where I hope to get in some runs on treadmills at our hotels. Must sneak those in as hubby won't be thrilled! Hope everyone continues to do well and good luck with aches pains and most of all training.
Happy running!
Pam

Happy to report I finished my 11 miles on the TM this morning in 1:58:29. Not too bad, and the ankle feels great.

Great job! I admire you and the others who can go the distance on the treadmill.

I ran more than six miles this Saturday! Last week I was able to run at the Boardwalk for two mornings! Got in 4.5 miles each time!

Can't wait to run with you ladies!

Picture of the Tink neckles on the facebook site - I appearently can't copy it here.
Thanks to everyone posting about their runs espcially those who struggled. I struggled too. So glad we are 4 weeks away. I wish it was 6.

Patty, Congrats on finishing the half this weekend!! I had the same problem with my right calf on my last 12 mile run! I couldn't run at all after mile 9.5. I wish I knew how we could avoid it, I'd love to hear any advice.

Good luck with the rest of your training!

Jenn

This is great news!

AND I'm currently freaking out cause on my ticker I see 3 weeks, 6 days until the 1/2! Aaaa!! OR :cheer2:

So excited! I got my sparkle skirt an tiara visor today! Now I just need a light blue shirt to complete my outfit.

Have any of you gotten the tiara visor from Running Princess with the stones that need to be glued on? What kind of glue works best?

Congrats to all who got those long runs in over the weekend! I didnt get a run in at all. My knee is still bothering me and i didn't want to make it worse. I might try a short interval run tomorrow. It's supoosed to be close to 60 degrees here and I hate to pass up getting out in that kind of great weather.

Hi everyone...I am a newbie and have been reading this awesome thread to get advice. This is my first half marathon. It has been a HUGE goal of mine since I started weight watchers last March. I have lost 40 pounds, and I am happy with my training. I ran/walked 12 miles yesterday. No, I am not speedy, but I am maintaining an avg 15 min pace, so I am happy.

Here is my question...I see where some of you are recommending taking a camera. Does anyone race with a small fanny pack for a camera and maybe a protein bar?
