Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Sorry, long month and the airport this morning.

I would expect that you took off a little dehydrated and did not hydrate much ir at all on the run? Litght headed and dizzy are the imediate signs that you needed to stop and hydrate about 30-45 minutes earlier. If you are not bringing liquids, look at all the various options you have and try bringing them with you. Look at your diet the night before. Any wine, etc? Salty food? Did you drink pre-run?

If it is a hydration issue, the real simple explanation is that your blood vessels dilate during high activity to allow more blood and nourishment to the muscle. It's hot and humid, therefore you sweat - a lot because normal sweat rates do not carry off the heat as well. Couple the two, more vessel volume and less volume of blood; you end up with not enough volume to the brain.

Ok enough hydration. Other factors could be at work. Keep a long of what you feel, when you feel it and the weather and activities. If you have this occur a few more times, then a visit to you GP is in order. Absent that, you are more than likely ok.

Hey howdy hey there, Coach :)

So, I'm trying to go back through all of the posts - what time do you recommend eating the last "large" meal before the race itself? This is also my first 1/2 and I've been training every other day, sometimes eat dinner about two hours before I go running. Obviously not too smart because once in awhile I feel a bit ill from it.

Do you have any tips on how to deal with our humidity here in Florida? I can run my first mile in 10:30 with no problems but after that, I start to have a hard time getting air...it's almost like the humidity is so thick, I can't take a deep breath. I end up slowing down to about 12:30 for the rest of the run (5 miles total in a run so far).

Thanks for any info :)

I am a huge “do nothing new” just before or during a race advocate. What I counsel is try to be consistent with your normal training practices. Since most races are morning races I laid out a schedule for a few folks that mimicked a morning race. Assuming a 6 AM start and a 6 pm meal… That would put a normal last meal about 12 hours pre-race. Understanding that most of that is sleep, it just makes sense to make your lunch you large meal on race day. I would say in the 1-2 pm range would allow your system to process any issues in plenty of time. Then a smallish carby snack about 3 hours pre-race. If I am reading your post correctly, you are feeling dinner on a few runs. I think this plan would be helpful. Just remember, keep even the larger meal kind of bland and within foods that you know will not create an issue.

With regard to pace… it sounds like you are not going slow enough in mile 1 for the added heat load. Try running your first mile at 12:30 and then towards the end, if you are feeling better, step it up a bit. If you train at a 12:30 pace you will notice that it will improve in September, once the temps start to moderate some.

Coach -

I really appreciate all your advice to myself and to others on the thread thus far! Your wisdom has been quite helpful, and has really helped to shape how I train, eat, and fuel up for runs.

Thanks also to FireDancer, and some other folks here who have given sound advice (I can picture your avatar but I can't recall your names... but in general if you have offered any sort of advice on this thread - THANKS!!)

I think I speak for everyone when I say this is a great community and knowing that I have folks I can *talk* to about running has really helped with my overall motivation and commitment to become and stay a distance runner.

I am big on group hugs, especially those of the enourmous kind, so...

:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

If any of you happen to see me at the race start, I expect a hug. :cutie:

You're awesome. Thank you :)

I wanted to piggyback Carey's thanks to Coach and FireDancer and roomthreeseventeen and others as well. You have all helped me the last few months, so :worship: MANY THANKS!

Also, I wanted to mention something I saw on Facebook and thought some here would like to know. They are apparently going to start selling the "In Training" shirts August 1st on the RunDisney site.

Have a great run today!

My husband and I are planning to do the half marathon relay in the fall. He has been having back pain which seems to be aggravated by running and am concerned about what will happen if he ends up not being able to do his part. We even have our hotel booked! Would they end up letting me run the entire race that day or would I need to find a replacement? Anyone have any experience with this last year that could offer some advice? I didn't know if the bibs would say runner 1 versus runner 2 and someone say something if I was on the opposite part of the course as to what my bib says. Also, didnt know how the timing chip would work either, if i didnt have him starting at the exchange location. Hope this makes sense! Would rather do the whole thing than lose the registration fee if it comes down to it!

From the FAQ

If my Relay teammate is injured or can no longer attend, can I still participate?
Yes, you can either switch to the Half Marathon race or continue to participate in the Relay. You will still receive your Relay medal, but you will not be eligible for Relay Team awards. Please refer to the Registration page for the Transfer Policy and to the Expo & Packet Pick-Up section of this page for information on picking up your teammate's packet.

I am so sorry to hear about your husbands injury. I would be willing to run it with you if I can run the shorter leg. :) I am signed up for the 5K that morning and DH is doing the full 1/2 Marathon. I hope that your DH is feeling better

I just got back from my long run/walk of the week. Run Keeper says I did 4.5 miles in 1:05:51, but I liked my Nike Plus better which said I did 5.12 miles ;) I think that the Run Keeper is a bit more accurate, unfortunately.
I am pretty happy with this considering I have been back from my run for about an hour and it is still 95 degrees outside, and at worst, I averaged about 14:42 per mile. I was absolutely dying the last mile. The air felt so thick making it really hard to breathe and my gluteus medius muscles were starting to hurt from the constant pounding of the pavement. Also, I just bought a brand new running shirt and it rubbed my left arm raw for some reason. Once I felt it rubbing, that is all I could think about for the last 1/2 mile - how annoying, LOL.

In any event, thanks to everyone for their continued support.... I am getting there slowly and just wish I could get to the point that I looked forward to my runs instead of dreading them. I truly envy those of you who do :)

Hey Dagny, we can definitely do this together! I did my long run this morning also. I did 6 miles and my average was 14:40. It is 98 here now, so I totally understand. I actually ran with a water bottle and took a sip every minute or two it was so hot and humid. I think I might be floating by the time I did 12 miles i I continued doing that, but it helped. I don't have any belts or anything so...

Are you doing Galloway? Runkeeper seemed to be more accurate for me as well. Well, be glad your run is done. You can relax and enjoy the rest of the day knowing that you already accomplished your mileage. :cool1:

I have found that I enjoy running in the evening more than I do in the morning. When I run in the morning, it definitely feels more like a "chore". Maybe a different time would work better for you. I also enjoy running with someone as opposed to alone. Hope you find a way to enjoy it more.

Have a great day everyone!

I would agree that you RunKeeper is more accurate out of the box. Have you ever calibrated you shoe sensor for Nike+? I find that the foot pod needs calibrated for me ... Generally they are about 10% off.

Also, great do nothing new experience. I have a few shirts that I suffer seam rub when wearing. There is a great product that runners use call Runner's lube. It is similar to vasolene but water soluble so it will not ruin clothing.

Sound like you are getting there.

Well I got over my 10k issue. The race I ran today was a lot better than the last one I attempted. There was a person at every corner so you didn't feel all alone and they had mile markers. Of course it was on the first day of the Chicago land heat wave.

How funny, I was just having the same issue. I had to run inside today cause it was just to hot for me, but the treadmill said I did just over 8 miles while my nike+ said I did 9.46 miles. I thought I calibrated it once before but guess I didnt do a good job on it.

I have tried to calibrate it, but the dumb thing tells me that I don't have any valid runs even though my stats have uploaded to the Nike+ website ;) I am probably not using it correctly. I do find it useful to keep track of my current pace even though the viewing is fairly awkward with the viewer facing the way it does.

Would love to hear what you all are listening to while you are running!

That's a great time:) What walk/run ratio are you doing? I only been using runkeeper the last couple of weeks and wish I had been using it longer.

If I waited until evening to run, I'm afraid I wouldn't do it. I have to just get up and do it. What walk/run ratio do you do? I'm doing 1:1

I am the same way. I run in the morning because I am afraid if I wait I will find a reason not to do it. :rotfl:

Hey Jennifer, thanks! I would guesstimate that I ran the first 3 miles without stopping. The next 1.5 miles was a combination of walking and running. Maybe 2 minutes running, 1 minute walking. I walk really really fast though. My husband, who is in really good shape, can't keep up with me when I am walking - he has to jog. I guess that is a good thing :) Whether I can keep that up for another 8 miles remains to be seen. With only 10 weeks to go, I just plan on adding another mile each week.

I must say that I was BEYOND ready for that run to be over last night...sigh. 13 miles seems such a long way!
