Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

Speed bump? LOL. Was there some huge bump in the road or something?

Yeah. When we exited the AK parking lot we went through the parking gates and they had people standing there yelling continuously. They were pretty big and I know they had to yell but the way they sounded, like a scratched record that kept skipping, was kind of comical.

I think the cooking on the course was a bit of a fail, much like their last race announcement. I get it is a food themed race but no one wants to smell cooking meat in the middle of a race.

Even worse then the chef cooking though was the smell in the Millennium Village (or I guess World Showplace) after the race. They were doing events in there all day and as soon as I entered it reeked of cheese and garlic.

:crazy2: Mmmm, mixed with sweaty people.... ;)

Finally took the plunge and registered for the half marathon. Yikes!

I also registered my family and I for the family 5K...we are registered in the stroller division and intend on walking most of it...just something fun to do as family. Has anyone else done both events? Plenty of time in between to rest.

I am staying at Pop which is not a host resort. Hoping that I will hook up with some fellow Dissers staying at the same resort as me to get to the event. I will be going alone to the half.

It's kinda disheartening to know that I will not have anyone at the finish line to see me...DH will need to stay behind and look after the kids. Was maybe thinking about hiring a babysitter...has anyone used that service before?

I'm still very excited to be running my first half marathon..especially at Disney World..it's going to be a very memorable first trip for me and my family.

I signed up to both the 1/2 and 5k. It will be my first 1/2 so very nervous. My friends are doing the 5k, but I'm on my own for the 1/2.

down to 3 weeks until my 1st 5K here at home.....i'm up to 3 miles in 40 minutes on the treadmill. I got a new job that has a gym in it and i'm able to go in in the morning and get some time in on the treadmill. I think i'll be ok for the 5K, but i'm just worried that even with the gym at work, my schedule is still so crazy i'm not going to be able to get up to 13 miles in 19 more weeks!! I'll admit i'm hesitant to spend the $165 if I'm not 150% sure i'll be able to do the race! I'm so tempted to just register for the 5K and try for the 1/2 marathon when my mommy schedule isn't so crazy!

I also thnk maybe the treadmill is giving me a false time. I'm running with the timer on the treadmill, which I know I won't have in the race. I run 5 minutes that a brisk walk for 2 minutes, than run 5 minutes, than walk 2 and so on. I look at the timer and think, just 1 more minutes, push harder. at the race, I won't have that and am worried that my time and pace will slow down a bit. true??

I ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon today, my first and longest run ever. I did it in 2:12 and I'm not dead, so that's an accomplishment. Now I am super excited to run the Wine and Dine, especially since I can't stop eating post-race. I think I can do better with a night race - getting up at 4:45 AM is not my idea of fun.

At least I know I can do it now!

I'm not sure about your work/mommy schedule, but have you looked at the Galloway training plans on Run Disney? It's only 3 runs a week - 2 runs at 30 minutes and a long run on the weekend. And almost half the weekends are a "fall back" week meaning you're not really doing a long run, just 3 or 4 miles. I print that out for my fridge so I can see what runs I need each week and check them off when complete. That is an 18-week training plan, so you still have time. ;)

As for timing and motivation, you can get an inexpensive sports watch with a timer function. For my first half, I wore a $14 watch from Target. It worked well for me. If you want to spend more, you can get a fancy sports watch or a GPS sports watch - those will beep for you at your intervals.

Congrats! :yay:

Yay! I completed my first official 10K with chip timing yesterday (at 58 minutes) and so today I officially registered for the Wine & Dine Half so that I could use my chip time as proof of time for the right corral. I also noticed that today is the last day to save $10 off the registration fees.

KAJ - I don't have kids and have never used the babysitter service, but I have heard great things about it and totally think you should take advantage of it so your hubby can be there at the finish line, and the two of you can enjoy the after party.

Jennifer - Also my first half marathon. Maybe we can meet at the start line and give each other a quick hug before the run! Actually, the same goes for everyone else running solo - GROUP HUG BEFORE THE RACE!!! :)

Apr - You can do it! Go for the half! You only have to maintain a 15 minute per mile pace, which normally is a walk/job mix for people and it sounds like something you can handle by October. I, too, think that the treadmills I use at the gym give me a false time occasionally, because when I use RunKeeper and GPS my miles/pace seems to be slighty different even though my total time is the same. Don't sweat it too much, though. I personally think the overall pace (and heck, the ability to even accomplish a distance jog at all) is the most important part.

daleed - Congrats! 2:12 is a great time!

ALL - I am uber excited about this race! I am running solo and staying at Coranado Springs (not a host resort). I am thinking of heading to the Boardwalk area and catching a bus to ESPN there on run day. Anyone care to join me?

:goodvibes - Carey

So if my caculations are correct, we have just over 18 weeks for the race. I plan on starting the training program this week. I had to stop running over two months ago due to no time between school and work so I plan on getting busy and following the plan to get ready! I'm excited!

i took a look at the Galloway training program and it looks good, but i have to say I think 15 seconds running 45 seconds walking would be suicide on a treadmill!! I think i'll stick with 5 min running 2 min walk. but i like the idea of just 2 days a week and saturday.

i'm up for a group hug at the starting line! i'm going to be so nervous!!

Will look into the babysitting service..I did some research and it looks quite reputable. Would be nice to have someone to celebrate with after I complete my first half marathon! Gosh it sounds so sureal to say that...this is something that I never thought was possible.
Definitely in for the group hug at the starting line...not sure how we will find each other though...I will definitely be in the corral with the slower runners.
What did everyone put down for there anticipated finish time?

Last year were able to find each other before we went to our corrals due to the amount of people wearing WISH shirts. So a pre-race group hug/last bit of encouragement is totally feasible.

I am officially registered for this one! This will be my first 1/2 marathon so I am pretty excited and nervous at the same time!

:)

For me personally I am only using the program as a guide line for the distance. I can do the full 30 mins running, I am only going to be worried torwards the end of the program due to having never went that many miles at one time. I do hear you on the two days a week then saturday though, I was doing every other day. I like this one better! :thumbsup2

This is my first half marathon and I am excited. Three years ago I thought the words "I'm running a half marathon" would never come out of my mouth. I played soccer all of my life and eventually became a division one soccer player until it was discovered that I have a heart problem. The doctors told me that I would not be able to play anymore or really exercise. Fast forward a few years and somehow I talked the cardiologist into letting me run a half marathon and doing a Run Disney event is on my bucket list.

Way to go! Congratulations on not letting anything stop you from doing what you want. I too would have never dreamt I would be able to run a half marathon due to my weight issues. I put my mind to it and was determined to be fit and healthy. Although I still have quite a ways to go, I am well on my way and feel confident that I will finish this race with strength and I will be very proud of this accomplishment..as you should be too!!

Is there course entertainment for the 5K? This will be my first, so just curious.
