Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

I believe it it said that you could use it that night or the parks or even stores. It goes in to details at the bottom of the rundisney page.

HTH!

Hello All! I am new to this thread. I did the Expedition Everest last year and I have a few questions about the Wine and Dine.

My Dh and I are debating doing the relay and the 5k. We were set on doing the relay. But now summer has HIT. We are in the 90s. Last month I was at 3 miles run/walk at 14 minutes. Now I am struggling to do 2 miles in 15! How will I ever get to 4.83? (Dh has the bigger portion.:rotfl:)

1. How do you all train in the summer months?

2. If I do the 5k instead will I be eligible for park tickets? We are thinking of doing 3 day park hoppers. I saw someone posted the price for 4 day. Does anyone know the price of 3 day park hoppers?

3. If we book travel thru sports, can we get the dining plan?

Thanks everyone! I hope to see you all in October.

1. How do you all train in the summer months?

Of the questions you asked this is the only one I know. For me it is a combination of running after the sun goes down and going out in the heat and sucking it up. Just make sure you stay hydrated and if you are going to be out there for a while wear sunblock. If you'd rather run in the morning that is another option and will get you cooler weather then running after dark usually but I am not a morning runner.

As the summer wears on I find I start to tolerate the heat much better and the Wine & Dine, even though it is at night, is still hot and humid even in October so it is good training.

Good luck.

OregonGirl-running is what caused the discovery of my heart problem. I have a tachycardia arrhythmia which caused me to black out. In college our running pace time was between 7 and 8 minutes. Well, really 7 minutes 30 seconds anything slower was considered bad. With what all my testing showed I was really surprised that the doctor gave me the okay. I have a few rules that I have to follow. I have to email her all my times from my races to make sure that I do not drop below a 10 minute mile, wear a medical alert bracelet and a few other rules. This was on my bucket list and I am so glad I will be able to cross it off in a few months.

Rugul8ter - 7.5 minutes a mile? Damn. I tried that on the treadmill the other day at the end of a 60 minute, 10 minute per mile pace and it was FAST!! I'm not sure I could ever get that fast and I'm not sure I want to. Do I get any slack cut if I mention that I am a 5'3" shorty? Let's find each other before the race and do a group hug! :grouphug:

FireDancer - Thanks for the insight on the inclines. I have a route with some crazy hills and so I am hoping I will be OK. As I recall you were considering doing the Wine & Dine again this year - are you going to? I am foreseeing a huge group hug for all us Dis'ers at the start line, see...

ECO! Hi! Welcome! Where are you that its 90s?! In Oregon we are still getting rain and 60s. Everything is way wet and the grass is way high and its just a mess. I could use some sun right about now... To answer some of your questions, I am pretty sure a participant of any of the W&D events can utilize the discounted park tickets. I don't know about the dining plan for discounted room rates but I was going to call tomorrow myself and so can put more info on the boards afterwards.

Mermaid - I concur with Rizzo. The website states you can use the $10 gift card whenever you want. It is my understanding that each spectator ticket (as well as the participant who gets entry to the after party with their registration) receives a $10 gift card. I was also under the impression that us participants AND spectators get a beverage and food ticket on top of the $10 gift card, AND the participants get an additional beverage of their choice at the finish line to "get the party started". Is this information incorrect?

I feel you on the heat...I heard the phrase "flirting with the 100 degree mark" this morning on the news during the weather and immediately felt faint. This time of year, I'm already sweating through my top while I'm stretching BEFORE a run. I would agree with what another poster said, you kind of just have to suck it up and get out there and do it, but just be smart about it. Expect your pace to be affected, stay hydrated throughout the day as well as during your run, and do your best to arrange your schedule to where you can run during a "cooler" part of the day or at least on a shady route (although I totally understand not being able to do this...2 of my 3 weekly runs have to be in the hottest part of the day after work, and I have no way around that...but I make sure my long run on the weekend is at the crack of dawn!). Maybe throw in some walk breaks, or extra ones if you already do run/walk intervals...and just really be aware of how you're feeling. The heat and humididty can really zap you so play it safe and back off if you start to feel dizziness or nausea coming on.

I saw this quote posted on espnW's FB page a few weeks ago and printed and posted it at my desk at work to give me some motivation as I'm walking out the door to run this summer..."I'm not telling you it is going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it."

You're welcome. I won't be doing the W&D this year, I have three long races this fall closer to home (Parkersburg, WV, Akron, OH, and Chicago) and after the announcement of the Tinkerbell half I will be avoiding RunDisney events for a while. I am looking forward to doing some of the other FL races and then getting over to Orlando for a couple of days.

OregonGirl - Ever since the site came back up this week, I can't find where it said you get a ticket for each, now it just says a drink at the finish line to "get the party started" or something and then the $10 card to do whatever you want with.I think they are hoping to cut down on lines by switching to this. It will spread people out more.

Again, this is my first half. I still haven't gotten up to that many miles and have a question.

I live in South Florida and it is already HOT. When you run the half, do you bring water with you or do you just grab water along the route? I am starting to get into 5-6 miles soon and am thinking I am going to have to start bringing water with me...

Thanks!

Thanks!

The race supplies water and PowerAde on an average 1.5 mile interval. Note some intervals approximate 2 miles and some shorter.

I swore that 2010 Food and Wine was a Once and Done race. However, we are looking for a fall half and this fits the schedule. That coupled with an expected 40th anniversary celebration on October 1 leads me back in this direction. maybe

Muggy and warm? Oh yeah, it's Florida. I almost forgot.

I was wondering about inclines myself - not so much actual hills or obvious heights, but does anyone know if there are any steady inclines or declines during the half that around over, say, a 1.0 on the treadmill?

Adding to Frank's comment on hills and your question of 1.0 incline...

There are some slopes. look at the map of the course an you will see that the course starts at WWoS, heads west and crosses World, Buena Vista goes the AK then recrosses Buena Vista and World, makes a u turn and comes up to World, turns North and the turns east on Buena Vista before heading into the DHS. Each approach to World and Buena Vista is an overpass incline. General slope is about 3-6% for less than a quarter mile.

In addition there are two mole hills with 5-6% incline as you run past the Yacht and Beach Clubs. These are really short but late in the race.

If you have trained at all these should not cause you any issue at all. They are nothing like the rolling hills of a river valley.

I like THAT quote:thumbsup2 That will be mantra!

I live just north of Atlanta and it is hot. I was running at night but that is the hottest time of the day now. I moved to mornings this week. Only there is no shade. I was hoping someone had a magic formula for running in the summer. This is Disney running we are talking about but it does not seem like it.

OregonGirl - Thanks for the welcome! I am really excited about this. Im very hopeful that I will be able to make it. Congrats on how far you have already come. I look forward to getting to the point that you are at.

kaj1436 - Glad you signed up. My husband is not coming. He is staying home with the kids. I am doing the race with a friend of mine, but doubt that I will be able to keep her pace. You can always hang with us!

sunshine 269 - Welcome. I know how you feel. I am nervous too! Hopefully the Disney excitement will help to finish! That's what I'm hoping..

krisnchris - How are you training? I am curious because from your time, it seems like we are very similar. I am doing the Jeff Galloway but doing 2:1 intervals. It is my first too and am looking for anyone and everyone to talk too!

I also saw today that it changed on the event details. Instead of the drink tickets, runners now get one wine or beer at the finish line and then the $10 gift card for inside. Did someone else already post this?

I just may take you up on that!! I'm not much of a big partier.. let alone going alone...maybe meet up after the race? Thanks for the offer.

Definitley in for a group hug and some last minute moral support before the race..I'm sure I'm going to need it. I keep invisioning myself alone at the start and freaking out! LOL Not really but I will be very nervous.

Love that quote!! I will definitely thinking that when times get tough and I want to quite...Thanks for sharing

I just looked at the course..It seems more real somehow. I really hope I'm ready for it

Jennifer

sunshine269 - Jennifer, It's so funny you say that. I looked at it and thought , "Oh, that's not bad." THEN I looked at the blown up picture and I thought back to the last time I rounded that big turn at Animal Kingdom and thought "Is this ever going to end..." Too funny. We have lots of time to get ready though. What is your training schedule?

kaj1436 - We can absolutely meet up after the race. You will find me in the medical tent. Just kidding! A little humor.... Would love to get together! Before too!

rizzobob-right now I'm running 3 days a week doing a 5k app. I have 3 more weeks then I move up to 1/2 marathon app. It has me running 6 days per week. This will be my first 1/2, very nervous.

Jennifer

I have to say that when I looked at the course that I was a little disappointed with long stretches on the highway. They keep you entertained during that, right? I don't know what I expected. I guess in my mind the parks were bigger!

On another note, it looks like I'm going to Disney three times in the year so I'm thinking about getting an annual pass. Does anyone know if that the annual pass discount is better then the race discount?

That is a common complaint about Disney races. I think that I was even surprised about the distance between parks in my first Disney in 99. In the last couple years, Disney has done a great job bringing entertainment out to the long stretches between the parks.

For the W&D, the race has about four of the 13 miles in parks or resort areas. It's not as bad as one would think.

As far As annual pass vs other entry options... I have not done the math with any discount but find that the break even point is between a 6 and 7 day hopper pass. I have an annual pass due to frequent trips tp the MCO area.

They do a pretty good job of keeping you entertained. If you care about your time, these stretches of highway are the best parts. It is there that I was able to pick up the pace and make up for some of the time that I lost going through the parks.

Most half and full marathons around the country have equal stretches where there is little entertainment. Disney does have some stuff going on along the road though and I would imagine there will be more this year. I'd like them to find a way to allow spectators along the roads because they are even more motivating then performers. Maybe they have a way this year for spectators to get there. Last year a couple of folds found a way to get there but not many. I concentrate on my form and pace at those parts so I personally don't need the entertainment to distract me.

I'd prefer a little more time on the road and less time in DHS because the road is straight and the portion in DHS is just too winding to keep up your pace that late in the race.
