Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

10 is awesome! And there's no shame in walking... (of course, I'm a bit biased since I'm a walker-only ;)). You're gonna get to that finish-line one way or another!

It is looking more and more like I am going to be walking a great distance in this race. I am not sure what is going on. I tried resting for three days after my long run Saturday, but yesterday the back of my knee just ached even during my warm up. Not sure if it is a stretching problem or what. I am going to try going to Pilates tonight and then running to see if the stretching helps or not.

What pace are you walking at, if you don't mind me asking?

I jog a little, walk a little, jog a little, stop for a photo op, jog a little, walk a lot. You may be surprised how much ground you can cover if you walk with a purpose.:thumbsup2

Thank you very much everyone for the recommendations.

I have a Garmin 305 and love it. I don't really use the heart rate monitor so I could have gone with the 205 but Amazon had it for about $16 more and for $16 I'll take the heart rate monitor. I'm sure I'll eventually use it.

I would look at the Garmins, Timex Ironman GPS watches, and the Suunto GPS watches and compare the features and prices. I have heard good reviews on all 3 but can only speak personally about the Garmins.

I am leaning towards the Garmin 305 myself.

I have a Garmin 205 and love it! Despite the size (it looks like I have a laptop sitting on my wrist :rotfl2:) it works great for tracking pace and distance. It's been very accurate too. Over the course of a 13+ mile run it was short by about .08 miles :) When I've used my RunKeeper and Nike+ apps on my iPhone to track pace and distance I've had those be short by over half a mile pretty consistently.

I have nike+ and I havent had any problems with it so far. Ive done 2 disney races at the beginning of the year and some more recently and its been pretty close for the distance! I keep it calibrated as often as I can and I have had no problems. One thing I always do though is forget to turn it off when I cross the finish line...guess im just too excited and forget! :yay: but compared to the prices, since I already have a iphone....$25 is really cheap. Those watches can cost $100's, so of course they will be more accurate and have more features! My roomate had a garmine and didnt like it, she sold it after using it at the wine and dine last year...wouldn't charge right and didnt work like it should.

I tried to love my Nike+. I love the website, but you can't "fix" anything OR add runs that were not completed using the Nike + feature. For that reason, I will stick to logging data on RunKeeper. I have never been able to calibrate my Nike + - it always tells me I don't have any qualifying runs, which is ridiculous. My first couple of runs got logged in the year 2008 or 2009? My Nike + has been 1/2 mile to a mile off from my RunKeeper. I have tried every which way to get the watch to calibrate but I have finally given up.

Also, I simply cannot stand the watch. I have no idea why Nike wouldn't face the information to read like a normal watch? It is so awkward to read anything while you are jogging with the data in a vertical format.

Runkeeper on my Iphone works perfectly. Dead on distances. (Iphone 4)

I love RunKeeper, but I like to keep my iPhone in my spibelt (I use it as my iPod as well) so I can only tell my overall pace at the voice intervals. I have a system that seems to work for me (at least on the treadmill) so I would like to mimic that as much as possible - being able to see my current pace so I can adjust accordingly would be a lot easier than pulling my iPhone out of my spibelt constantly. Knowing me I would drop the dang thing ;)

I leave one week from today - I am getting really excited (and really nervous too :)

Due to an injury I limped the entire half in January.. and still made the time limit.. barely. There are a lot of walker only people. They seem to have a lot more fun than the others.

Not sure what your system is, but you can have RK give up updates up to every minute, in addition to mileage-based cues up to every .25 miles (IIRC).

We leave a week from tomorrow at like 0600. Gotta say, I'm getting a bit nervous.

I've been doing my LSD walks at about a 16:20 pace, shorter walks are around 15, sometimes getting down to 14:30. I'm hoping to maintain 15-15:30 during the race. Not going to have lots of space between me and the sweepers, but I'm going to try my darnedest to keep them at bay!

I'll be leaving with my friend a week from tomorrow (Friday). Will be staying around DTD at the Hyatt. Have anyone made up plans to meet up yet? Carey and others have suggested DTD but dont know what time or where.

I don't think they really sweep. Due to an injury I finished the half in January just within the time limit. When I crossed over the bridge going back into EPCOT and looked back. There were wall to wall people as far as I could see. There is no way they sweep anywhere close to the 16 minute time limit.

So relax.. Have fun. (you aren't going to win) so enjoy!

Thanks Sam... its nice to hear, I was more nervous about it at the beginning of my training, then I learned more about how they pace (going off the last person in the last corral) so I chilled out some... but now as race week creeps closer and closer, I've started worrying more again. Will try to take your reassurance to heart!

I just looked at last year's results. The last person to get a time finished just under 4 hours. Over an 18 minute pace.

They do sweep, the 16 min/mile pace starts after the very last person crosses the start. Once they pass, they will wait a few minutes and then they start moving forward at a 16 min/mile pace. There are certain places they pick up at, you can get passed and pass them back before you hit a cutoff point. Once you get off the roads, the sweepers usually disappear as long as your giving the effort to finish and don't wanna quit.

I ordered a "Bibfolio" as a little surprise for my BF (we're celebrating 3 years at Kouzzina next week while in WDW!) from the "Gone For A Run" website...just got it in last night and am really happy with it! At first I thought it was a little expensive for what it is (or what I thought it was going to be), but it's much nicer than I expected...and came in a nice velvet-y sleeve/cover too which was a nice touch and good for gifting. Anyway, if anyone is looking for a gift for a runner or just something for themselves to keep your race bibs in, I recommend! I'll probably end up ordering one for myself now!

That is good to know. I think the audio cues every minute would start to wear me out since I use my iPhone as my iPod too. I have songs to keep tempo with out how fast I need to walk and or run. Probably sounds silly, but it works for me at this point!

What is your bib number?

I don't think it sounds silly at all. I know the music I listen to affects my pace. Which is why I have a special 1/2 marathon playlist instead of just hitting shuffle when I train.

I thought the cues would be annoying but oddly enough they are not...but I use the Runkeeper Pro application. If I had to listen to the beeps I heard constantly throughout the DL Half last year, I would go insane. It was like being at the grocery store. ;)

As far as sweeping, Disney definitely sweeps - many people have posted after the race that it happened to them. You just never know. But, I don't want to risk testing it out.

I also have a "Running Music" playlist - I need fast tempo music to keep me going!

Yep, definitely don't need the constant beep beep beep. Totally worth the extra month not to listen to that :)

Shelby, Dangy - If you use runkeeper, how come we are not street team members? :)

Todd - I also have a special playlist for the race. Lots of race paced techno stuff. Hee hee.

Megan - I am also getting nervous. I have TOTALLY SLACKED my running training this week. Last time I got in 7.5 miles was September 13th. Eeek! I have, of course, done the gym on the 14th, 18th and 21st (elliptical averaging 3 - 5 miles and yesterday was 3.5 on treadmill and another 1 on elliptical). I've been so busy with work, and the days are getting shorter (I don't really have a safe route to run at night), and I was recovering from a groin area injury (seems to be all better now) and I still am careful with my knee (which acts up from time to time) and I am just about ready to kick myself. I was really hoping to get some long runs in before next Saturday. This weekend maybe, and I am going to the gym in a few for more cardio (It's only 9 PM here and my gym closes at 11 pm), but still. ARGH!!!!

Aaron, regul8ter18 (what's your name, by the way?), others - We did discuss a meet, at 5 PM at downtown disney on Friday, September 30th, and I suggested the amphitheater area outside World of Disney. I also suggested a run after, but if there's little interest that's fine because my crew is going to MNSSHP that evening and we have dinner ressies at 6:30 or something.

Hubby and I leave next Thursday AM (one week! ACK!!!) I feel less ready for the actual trip then I do for the run. I am crazy busy with work deadlines, I am booked solid Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week with productions, I have no idea when I will find time to pack for us, I HAD hoped to go shopping for some outfits (we're doing a cruise after the run) and I'm not sure when that can happen), I want to do a long run this weekend.

Jeez.

But I am looking forward to my shiny. The medal is a shiny and it shall be mine and it shall be my shiny. And then I will engrave said shiny with my name and time and it will henceforth be known as my sparkly shiny. And it will be mine.

- Carey

I have a question for the runners who ran the Wine and Dine half last year. My bib number is 1137, and I imagine I will be in coral b. How crowded is the first mile or so? Does it take a while until you can get up to your normal pace? This will be the largest race I have run to date.

Thanks in advance Bill
