Official 2011 Wine & Dine Half and Relay Thread

I was in coral A, started maybe 10 feet from the front of the pack, and the first mile was a bit packed. It is like that for almost every half I've done. You always have people starting slower than they should for where they line up and having a turn so close to the start (within the first mile) doesn't help because too many people pinch over while making the turn.

The roads are wide though and it didn't take too long to get through the crowds and get into your normal pace for the first 5K of the race.

It used to be on the waiver up next to the number, have they removed it?

The A runners experience with crowds and the C runners experience is very different... As well it should be. It is still a lot of people with some very narrow spots.. Starting at the front and running a fast pace is much eaiser than thrying to come from the back to post a fast time.

It isn't on the waiver. Only the number is on there.

Absolutely, I was just trying to get across that just about no matter where you start, even corral A, you will have a rough first mile pace-wise. Weird about the corral not being there, I've never done a corralled race that didn't let you know your corral before packet pickup. At least not that I remember.

So true. There are people who try to push to the front of coral A, that have no business being up there. You also have the people starting out so fast that you know they cannot sustain it. At some point, they are going to be in your way. Aside from that first turn, you do get a long and wide straightaway that allows for some to get it sorted out before heading into the Animal Kingdom park.

I was trying to agree with your point. Your advice to him.. who sounds like he should be in corral A, is better than mine.

It takes much more patience to wait to get onto your pace the further back you are. But that first turn will be bad no matter where you are in line. DON'T go grass!

I have a question for the runners who ran the Wine and Dine half last year. My bib number is 1137, and I imagine I will be in coral b. How crowded is the first mile or so? Does it take a while until you can get up to your normal pace? This will be the largest race I have run to date.

Thanks in advance Bill

I would concur that you are more likely to be in corral A, not B. I would also echo that the first mile can be a tad congested, but then spreads out, especially since the road is wide on the way to Animal Kingdom from Wide World of Sports.

Would love to know what songs are on your iPod - I am about an hour short of "good songs" for my expected finish time. I have acombination of hip/hop, rap, techno and 80's music :)

I have varying tempos and all types of music. I tend to have a very up tempo fast song followed by a moderate tempo song. I found out during the Princess this year (because my iPod didn't charge properly) that I can do a half without music, but it is far less enjoyable.

I was wondering if some of you would share your top 3 or so songs from your playlists. I am always trying to expand the running "Go Girl" playlist! Here are my current top 3:

Fort Minor "Remember the Name"... I am not a hard core rap girl, but the beat in this one is my top speed. It really gets me moving!

Metro Station "Shake It"

"Uprising" Muse

:)

My first song is one of my favorites and is not fast tempoed, because at the beginning you are luck to plod along any faster than a walk, "He Lives In You" from The Lion King on Broadway.
"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", by Daft Punk
"Sing, Sing, Sing", as preformed by the Benny Goodman and his orchestra.

Where do you guys see what corral you're going to be in? I'm bib #7126.

Very nervous. Haven't been able to train in the past three weeks due to overly busy schedule and other stupid things.

You will find out when you pick up your bib. It is displayed on it. That way the volunteers can help 'direct you' to the proper corral come start time.

It used to be on the waiver up next to the number, have they removed it?

Yup. No longer on the waivers.

My bad, I totally read that wrong. Isn't the first time, won't be the last (probably today).

I  The Lion King Broadway CD...we went to see Lion King 3D last weekend and I've been listening to that CD all week!

As for what my faves are on the running playlist, I love the song "Move Your Feet" by Junior Senior...I always pep up and smile when that one comes around. "Blackout" from Breathe Carolina is a newer fav of mine too on the running playlist...I've inserted that one a few times throughout. I like old-school Michael Jackson too..."PYT" and "Billie Jean."

Due to an injury I limped the entire half in January.. and still made the time limit.. barely. There are a lot of walker only people. They seem to have a lot more fun than the others.

This is absolutely true ;) Some of my races I walk/jog, but for the most part I walk the whole thing and chat with different people along the way - it's a ton of fun pulling each other along to the finish.

Also I can definitely confirm they DO sweep. I had two different friends that got swept at two different points along the route for the half in January. The people with 4 hour times have those times because they started in an earlier corral so they had some built in time to make it to the finish. Disney has to re-open the roads (and make sure there are volunteers along the route while people are still running) so they can't let people go all night with no time limit. Generally once you get off the roads you're allowed to keep going, which should be by the time you hit Hollywood Studios for this race, but you never know.

However, they are apparently very nice about it when they sweep and they encourage you on the bus ride back to keep up the hard work and try again, etc. They are NOT there to make you feel bad about having enough of a drive to start a half marathon, and just not being able to finish in the allotted time!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a medical issue that's pretty much prevented me from training most of the summer and is requiring me to walk the whole thing (like I said, I normally jog *a little* to pull up my time). I can walk around a 16:15 pace, but I'm in an early enough corral that I should be able to finish in time, as long as I can keep that pace up with virtually no training. If not, though, I'll still have as much fun as I can along the race route for as long as I can! All of you that are nervous can join me at the back of the pack, and we'll have fun the whole way!

Can I be nosy and ask how you got into an earlier corral? I'm assuming you had a faster qualifying 10K time?

My number is in the low 8000's, so I'm predicting I'm in the last corral... I put in an estimated finish time of 3:10 based on my last Disney half many years ago.

I think this is why I am so concerned about the sweepers... being in the last corral, I don't have as much leeway (especially with the waved starts) as someone who might be going the same pace or slower but was lucky enough to get into an earlier corral. I'd like to get myself a spot near the front of the corral just to give myself a few extra minutes (to be able to swing a potty-break if I need to! I don't think that's asking a lot ), but I feel bad being near the front and interrupting the runners that may be in the corral.

Ugggh.... overthinking this one...

Right there with you, megny. I'm 8668. I plan on scooting up to the front of the corral as best as I can.

I can't remember who said they're going to Kona on Sat morning - we are, too, 9:50 I think. I think we'll try to pop over to the MK to see what's going on after that, then head back to OKW to rest for the afternoon.

If you decide to do this, try to position yourself over to the right hand side. That way if you need to slow down or walk, you'll be out of the path of the other runners. Have a great race!!

All this corral talk has me wondering where I'll be. My bib is #7809 and I gave them a finish of 3:00 based on the WDW 1/2 this year (I walked the whole thing). But since then I did the DL 1/2 in 2:44 (added a tiny bit of jogging to see how the knee held up). Not sure if that is enough of a difference to move up a corral or not? :confused3

I'm going to Kona! Can't wait for some pineapple macadamia pancakes smothered in butter...I'm not sure what time our ADR is.

Does anyone know how many corrals there usually are?

That sounds good.

Five corals (A-E), I think.

OregonGirl- My name is Courtney and I was 98% we were meeting at DTD but wasn't sure where.

My Top 3 Songs are :

"Only the Good Die Young"- Billy Joel
"Remember the Time"-Michael Jackson
"We Ready" Archie Eversole- This one is from my college soccer days.:sulley:

Does that include the relay runners? Or are they all in their own (later?) corral?

I am pretty sure relay runners (runner 1) are in the same corrals as everyone else. They are probably placed based on an expected time or pace as well.

Ok thanks, I was just trying to figure out where I stand based on my bib number. I'm 7161, so maybe that means I am barely falling into corral C?

I'm bib# 3375. And based on past races.. I think I'll be in C.
