Official 2011 Princess Half Thread Part II!!!

Meant to get in a 4 mile mid-week walk/run . . . having some trouble with my left arch. I is really sore. It first started on my long 7/8 miler this past weekend. It is on the inside. I put cushioned inserts inside my shoes and it still bothered me today. I only made it 2 miles.:scared1:

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am icing it right now and stretch out really well after. So . . . .

About mantras - there is an article in the Feb. issue of Runner's World about this. Worth looking up if the article is on their website.

Also, it talked about the importance of a positive outlook. A woman who is an elite runner was fully prepped and trained to do very well in the 2009 Chicago Marathon. However, she said that she just didn't believe in herself and finished 17th, which is not so bad to us, but she was a full 11 minutes slower than she expected to be. She's convinced it's because she gave in and listened to her self-doubt.

Tried my own mantra today - "Keep your pace. Stay strong." Over and over. It worked pretty well!

Be positive, Princesses!:thumbsup2

I can't remember if it was THIS thread...or another one, but someone...I think Coach Charles, said start the 1st mile thinking very positive happy thoughts that it would set the mood for the whole race. Keep that in mind....be happy that first mile and then keep it going!

ingle, no advice for you. My Plantar Faciitis kicked in I could feel sore arch on my 10 mile run around mile 8. I was able to finish though and now its my heel that is really sore - kind of middle to inside. How are your shoes, are they worn out? Are you stretching and warming up and cooling down before and after your runs? I read somewhere with an injury things can get and feel the worst up to 36 hours after your injure yourself - so you might want to rest a full 3 days to see if it still hurts after that time.

I just wanted to drop in and tell you all what an inspiration you are and wish you luck!!! :lovestruc

I just started training for next year, and I spent the day reading this whole thread and it was such a boost for me to know that I'm not alone! I can only run about 2 miles now, and my head wants to go more but my body is revolting. I'm having knee issues and frustrated that I can't train faster, so it's been nice to read all about your journeys (and COSTUMES!!!!) princess: today while icing my knees!

Have a wonderful run and I hope to meet some of you next year if you run again!!

Congrats! It may seem like forever until next year, but boy am I surprised we are 1 month out!! I was just looking back over my initial training runs (I'm new to running since August) and am amazed at what my body has been able to do. I don't know what your particular knee issue is, but I am pushing Glucosamine vitamins on everyone I know with knee complaints! It's really helped me, although I didn't have anything serious, just too many years spent playing on hard floors with kids!

Good luck in you training!

Julie -- thanks for the comments . . . any stretching suggestions. I try to stretch, but it is not a strength of mine. I will try to do better at this . . . I guess I take a day off and see what happens. My shoes are good . . . I actually just got new Asics Gel 2150's. I didn't wear these on the long one this weekend, but did wear them today. I'm a little nervous, kinda get down to crunch time here.

ingle, I am no expert just started running in july but I basically do these....http://www.best-running-tips.com/running-stretches.html esp after. I really don't stretch much before hand, but I do warm up by taking the first mile very gradual and easy slowly getting up to pace...now I might be the wrong one to ask, um since I have PF in my feet! Hopefully its nothing, maybe post this question on the general boards to get some others non princess types to chime in.

I would def rest a day to see if it is feeling better. Good luck.

I am questioning if my training is aggressive enough. I have run 8.5 miles as my longest to date run. I am planning on upping that mileage by 1 mile per week until the week prior to the Princess 1/2. That will bring my long run to 11 miles (maybe 12). I am new to running so I cannot make huge leaps each week and need a day to recover after a long run. I continue to struggle getting my weekly miles in and only continue to frustrate myself knowing I need to be getting the miles in. Am I on the right track or do I need to make major changes in the month prior to the race?

I'm no expert, but getting your long run is important and if you get a 10 miler in two weeks before race day that should be good. The weekly short runs are important too and I would try and get a 3-5 miles in two more times a week. Try a warm up of 1 miles and then each mile increase your speed a little and don't forget to cool down. Speed drill runs are good too, but right now getting some miles in, is in my opinion more important. How is your pace? Do you feel confident that that is under a 16 mm?

It is very important to log those miles on your feet. That being said, my longest run before my first half was 11 miles...done the Sunday before the Saturday race. I think you will be fine with that.

My training plan for the January half only took me to 10. I think that definitely was enough. And it would have been even better if I'd talked with my running club coaches about time on the feet being as important as the miles. I did my 10 in just over 2 hours, which was great. Except I figured the half would take me 40-45 minutes longer, so while my body had experience with distance jumps enough to handle going from 10 to 13.1, it reacted a little to the extra 47 minutes on my feet. I should have slowed down in my 10 (or not tied it in with a 15K race) so that I was on my feet as long as I planned to be on the half course.

I'm in a reverse taper right now and next week will jump back into my training plan mid-way through to prep for the NYC Half on March 20, adding a mile or two to each long run...and I'm definitely going to make sure my longest run goes 2:45, even if I'm race-walking it the whole time.

Good luck!!

I How is your pace? Do you feel confident that that is under a 16 mm?

I feel may pace is ok. I am running an average between a 12:45-13:15 minute mile.

I am just worried this sickness is going to set me back. At this point the only thing I can do is forge ahead. I cannot dwell on my sickness - I can get out as soon as I feel better and run!

Thank you for the replies.

.

It sound like you have a good pace even if you lose a little. IMO it is better to get over your illness before starting any hard workouts. Maybe a few short easy runs to start. You don't want to start back and have another set back.

Next, all the excitement will help the day of the race. Try and get in the front of your corral. This will give you few extra minutes before the 16 mm pace starts.

Almost all my runs are by myself, and I look forward to them and I love it, but on race day all the racers and entertainment make the run so different. There is a lot of energy. I love that too. I'm sure you will do fine. Just picking up your bib will start the whole "I can't believe I'm doing this" feeling. And when you enter your corral...it's giving me goose bumps just thinking about it...it becomes very real.

Allright!!! That's great news! I loved your story.

I started out last year. Never been a runner and could only do 1 mile. Lol
Now, a year later, I am ready for the princess half marathon. I did do a 5k last summer and a half marathon near my home. I just wanted to see if I could do it.

I had Asics 2150's all year until now, I bought Asics Kayano 16 & 17. There is more gel. They seem more comfortable for my old feet. I spent way too much money on running gear, but it has been a fun journey.

I ice my knees everyday. Sometimes ice twice a day. I stretch often, maybe 2-4 times a day. I get massages often also. It really helps loosen up my tight muscles.

Good luck and hope to hear from you more often! :)

Just got word that our skirts are being shipped out tomorrow! Can't wait to see our entire "ensemble" together! Did my 9 miles today because babysitting for grandkids this week-end. Pace was 15:29. Wished I would have gone faster. Still 4 weeks to work on that. At the end, felt I could have gone on further, so that is good news! Was thinking about some things to make sure that new "princesses"princess: know. 1. Have a good sports bra. If you are well-endowed like moi, you will need to spend some money to get the best you can. 2. Make sure that you have friction lubricant and use it in any place (and I mean any place!) that might rub. I saw one girl after a race and her inner thighs were bleeding from rubbing together. 3. Make sure you have comfortable socks that accommodate your toes and are not cotton.
4. Check the weather forecast. If if is cold, realize you will be outside standing around for a while. Bring "throwaway" clothes if you get cold easily. 5. Know what you are going to have for breakfast before the race. Where are you going to get it? Last year, my daughter and I strolled down to get a bite before we got on the bus and the food court was closed!! Luckily, we were able to work something out. Now, we always plan ahead. 6. Have a good time!!:thumbsup2

I am sure that there are lots more pieces of advice that others can offer. I am certainly not an authority, but remembered how much I appreciated all the advice for my first half marathon. Good luck, princesses. 4 weeks to go!!:cheer2:

I am going along just like you. I did do my 11 already. I am going to try 12 this Sunday the 30th. Sunday the 6th - 5 miles. Sunday the 13th - 14 miles. Sunday the 20th - 8 miles. And finally, the 27th - 13.1 Princess.

If anyone thinks this might be a mistake and I should just go back to Hal Higdon, please let me know. :)

First, I have no idea of how long you have been running, what your pace is, and how many halves you have done so what I say may be useless...

I like Hal Higdon, but per doctors advice I only run 3 times a week (and that has been great the last year and a half...no injuries) and Hal has more runs, but I still look at his training plans for tempo and speed owrk.

Next, I have never done more than a 10 mile LR for a half. I do peak at about 25 miles in a week with my 3 runs combined. So my question would be...are you doing more than just a long run each week? I find miles per week important. That said, I am going to do 8-10 LR this weekend, 8 miles next weekend and 10-12 miles Feb 13. After that nothing longer than 7 and I will do some speed and tempo during the week. I will not run Fri and Sat before race and only 3-5 miles that 2/24.

Hope that helps.

This is some very good advice!

I like to have my breakfast packed in my go bag the night before and eat it once I arrive at Epcot. There has been water at the staging area before the race, but not at the corrals.

I also pin my bib on my clothing the night before and have my chip tucked in my shoe so that I can attach it once my shoes are tied.

Great advice!

I am well-endowed, and swear by the underwire Champion bras. You can get them at Kohl's or online.

Body Glide is a good lubricant stick and you can buy it at Dick's or your local running store.

I like to buy socks at TJ Maxx, Ross, or Marshall's. Name brand but for way less.

Hey Princesses! I just gained a partner for the race!!! My friend decided at the last minute that she's coming with me, and shocked me by signing up for the half. Now she just needs to kick start some serious training. I'm excited about a girls' weekend away from the kids and husbands.

I'm seriously freaking out about my TNT fundraising. I need to get a babysitter another day this week so I can hit up some more businesses for sponsorships. Is it wrong that I'm disappointed in a lot of my family and friends? Every time, and I mean EVERY time someone does a race or something for charity, I donate. Hardly anyone has donated. No one buys the things I sell. Even family members who have been directly impacted by leukemia haven't donated. I keep reminding myself that times are tough, people forget, etc. But your son almost died of cancer, you've been on 4 vacations in the past 12 months, and you can't give $5? (Sorry, rant over. LOL)

I decided to go kind of princess-y for the run. I bought a running skirt a few months back when it was clearanced on Sierra Trading Post. It was attached to pants, but they were way way way too long. I knew it would be too hot to run in the pants anyway, so the other day I hemmed them to long shorts. Gotta prevent chub rub! I ran with them the other day and they fit perfectly. I was kind of proud of myself for sewing a stretchy material. LOL I'll wear that with my TNT singlet and a tiara bondiband. And I got a fuel belt with an iphone holder built in for about $15 at Walmart. It works perfectly. Oooh, the time is getting closer. I'm almost a half-marathoner!!!:cloud9:

Thanks! I just got some Asics Kayano 16s!!! Love them! Have you ever taken glucosamine for your knees? I'm thinking about getting some and wondering if it really helps. :confused3

Man this makes me sad that I'm unable to do the princess this year :sad2: but it does give me hope for next year! I think with a year to train and get my walking fast enough for a 16 min mile that I WILL be able to do this :woohoo: Still doing the 5k during the princess weekend, and Toni (my trainer/friend) and I are going to come check out the finish line to see all you wonderful ladies finish:cheer2: Toni has decided that this will be an annual trip for us and she really thinks with a year to train, I can do the princess next year! I sure hope so cause I was so looking forward to it. I still, of course, need to check in with the ortho, but if I have training stretched out for a YEAR, then I think (and hope) he'd be ok with it! Thank you again for all the encouragement and CARE you guys have shown, you have no idea how much it is appreciated! Can't wait til my 5k and for your half!!
