hi all, just checking in since i've been mia. i visited a podiatrist on monday and he suspects tendinitis. he wrapped up my foot and of course it fell off right away. i got it re-wrapped today and realized that i don't like this podiatrist at all. i made an appt with a sports guy for tuesday. until then i am sort of just...not running...at all.

i'm so depressed. i want this tendinitis bs fixed asap so i can get back to running. until then i'm doing the elliptical here and there.

oh and my friend who said she'd run with me has decided to stop contacting me. she's going through a divorce and "some other stuff" which i'm very sad for her about but she never paid me back for the race, the room, and the flight. i put it all on my card. i've emailed her several times and she actually blocked me from looking at her facebook wall. i can't believe it. we've been friends since we were kids.

sorry for the debbie downer post!!! i swear i'm a shiny happy person! :)

Wow you have every right to be debbie downer. So sorry about your friend wigging out. I mean, just say, I am sorry, I can't do this..... don't block me on FB. THat is really sad.

As for your foot, hoping you like the sports doctor. I am recovering from Plantar Faciitis, probably sound like a broken record saying that, but when it was diagnosed, I had just gotten back into exercise after a long absence and not being able to exercise was VERY depresessing. Hang in there I know from my experience it sucks...but you need to recover. Hopefully the sports guys can help you with active recovery.

I agree, you are not a debbie downer, I would be VERY upset also.:hug::hug:
I hope you find someone to share the room/flight

Just thought I'd chime in on the taper- Binghams program (at least if my memory is correct) has you taper 2 weeks before the event with the 13th week (of a 14 week program) distance 75% of what was done week 12 and week 14 50% of week 12 getting ready for the race on the weekend (they do have 3 runs the week before the race with travel I usually omit the shortest of them).

As for night before the race dinner- I like pizza and try to eat my daily fruit/veggies before dinner.

One more question:

Two weeks before the Marathon should I have worked up to 15 miles, so that the 13.1 won't feel so bad?

Hal Higdon's beginner shows 8, 9, 10 every Sunday, and 13.1 as the next Sunday's race day.

Also, Team in Training told me to taper down the last week. What do you think they mean? What's a good taper down??

I got my foam roller at a specialty running store. I didn't see them at Dicks, but I like going to the running store because they were able to show me how to use it properly whereas it is rare to find someone that really knows about running at a big box store...except for REI. It is painful to use when you have an injury but the foam roller does work.

I don't know what benefit going over the amount of mileage really has...Jeff Galloway told me that I should look at going a little bit extra because by the 10 mile mark, I usually get bored. So, I am adding a bit of distance to the Hal Higdon plan for the WDW Marathon and we will see how it goes. Ultimately, the best benefit for me has been doing the intervals - I like 30 seconds/30 seconds but have been trying even intervals during my training this time and it keeps me challenged. I look at my Nike+ Sportband and like the equal intervals so that I don't lose track. I have decided that I don't want to be one of the many people with the beepers on the course telling me to change intervals. It was actually pretty annoying at the DL half.

As far as tapering, the Hal Higdon program includes that. So, just stick to it. It is a break with short simple runs and then no running at all that you take the week of the race so that your body recovers and everything is ready for the pounding during race day.

With Charlie Horses, you may really need to watch your hydration, electrolytes, and if you are drinking a recovery beverage after your workout. Balancing my fluid intake as recommended by Coach so that I was just right as far as hydration, and following each workout with chocolate milk has helped a ton. I can't tell you the last time I had a charlie horse.

Yum! Where are you running your 10K? I was signed up for the Seawall, but the date changed and now I can't do it.

I'm registered for the Trafigura 10K benefitting the Houston Ronald McDonald House...the course starts downtown near Sam Houston park and runs mostly up and down Allen Parkway...should be pretty challenging since Allen Parkway is sooooo hilly! Here's a link if you are interested: http://www.active.com/running/houston-tx/houstons-ronald-mcdonald-house-trafigura-home-run-2010

I agree with Jeff Galloway about going PAST the 13.1 mark in your training. I only trained for 12, and seriously hit a wall. It wasn't fun.

I agree with Amy. In training, I found a big difference between 10, 12, and 14, especially in how my body responded to my gear (chafe!) and fueling.

thanks:hug: i can't figure out what i'm more upset about - my "friend" or my foot! i am worried about my friend but at the same time so mad about her actions. i don't know what to do about her. i can only email her so much. i wonder if i should call her. or...maybe i should just suck it up and call it a loss.

What a pain!! I would be SO upset.

There will be a lot of us down there so I am sure we can keep you company on the course, at the expo, and after the race. :goodvibes

assuming that i'll be back in the running game shortly (hope!!), i'd like to train past the 13.1 mark. for me, i'd like to go into the race knowing that i've already done that distance.

Blah! It's been raining here all day...looks like I might end up having my official FIRST treadmill training run tonight....EWWWW! It's only 4 miles but I hate going to the gym...and trying to get an available treadmill at peak, after-work hours is such a pain! 3 hours until decision time...maybe the downpours will let up. And what is UP with the humidity and higher temps coming back?? YUCK!

To Dumbo Buddy: I hope your foot is only the tendonitis and it heals quickly.
I've found the Sports Medicine Docs to be way more invested in getting you back out there participating in the activity (running), injury-free. The regular orthos/podiatrists only seem to want to fix the immediate problem, but don't have a long-term plan to get you back in the "game". After 2 stress fractures (in the last 18 months) caused from running, I've had my fill of Doctors. So, I am on the rehab/therapy train right now too.
I can say that after my first stress fracture and rehab, my running improved greatly. I posted 2 PR's in a row for half-marathons. So, good things can come from injuries. That was my optimism speech...;) My hsband would laugh to see how optimistic I was just now. He usually calls me "Debbie Downer".:lmao:

I hope your friend contacts you, and she was just having a small rough patch of her own.

I hope the rain lets up for you! I had to run on the treadmill the other night, and after being used to running outside, the treadmill was not fun. It was only 3 miles, but it felt like torture. I used to do all of my running on the treadmill and now I don't understand how I did it!

I'm official! I registered this afternoon. My family thinks I'm nuts, I was just in Disney in October....but I don't think I'd be motivated to exercise at all during the winter with out this race.

i am thinking of treating myself to a massage after the race. Any suggestions on what time to plan for. I will probably be in the last corral and am not the fastest person, so factor that in your advice....13mm. THANKS!

OH, I am staying at the Swan and will look into the Spa there. :-)

The spa at the Swan is very nice...I think it maybe a different company than other Disney resorts, but I've been there and other resort spas and have always been very satisfied.

I think I'll probably go to 11 miles for my training. I've already surprised myself once with my 10k because even though I did a 6 mile training run (run/walked in 1:45) I ended up running the whole way in 1:11. So my personal experience is that I can push myself on race day. I may end up eating those words, so if one of you ladies passes me when I've hit my wall, give me a swift kick in the pants :lmao:!

I hope everyone has good runs this weekend!

when we were in WDW at the end of sept i did a spa package at the grand floridian. it. was. amazing. i got it for my birthday. dh just took the little guy to the parks and i met him later.

i have a feeling alot of people would like to do the massage post-race so it might be a good idea to book as soon as possible so you get in!

i'd imagine you'd be done with the race by 10 or even earlier. i guess it depends if you want the massage right after the race or maybe if you want to eat lunch first?

you know, i'm checking out that day and i was worried that i wouldn't be able to get back to the room and shower in time before they make me evacuate the room. worse comes to worse i could book a spa appt to be able to shower, right?? think that will fly with DH (cuz, you know, i'm already spending big bucks to get down there!)?

Good Morning Everyone!

You all are so helpful! Thanks.

That charlie horse was my first one. Maybe I was dehydrated. I was with a personal trainer and she was murdering me. Lol

Yeah, I agree about Dick's have people with no knowledge whatsoever. I do go to the running store to get fitted properly, then go to Dick's to buy the same shoe at a much cheaper price. Plus, I get coupons for 10.00 off a pair of shoes once in awhile.

I feel bad for Dumbo Buddy who's friend ripped her off and left her with a big bill. My mother calls people like that, fair weather friends. I would go see her, so you could see her face. She has some explaining to do or the relationship is in mortal danger! Hope your foot gets better quickly. I agree about Sports Medicine doctors being the best to go to.
