Should I be concerned that I usually taste like a salt lick after I run?

I have salt on my face, neck, and, even on my shoulders when I am done running. It looks like a fine powder. Some people are saltier sweaters then others.

Higdon Novice or Advanced. I find that the intermediate plans would be better if you were planning on doing the Goofy. But too advanced for most running their first or even second half marathon. Jeff Galloway spoke during the DL Expo and talked about how he used to do one minute intervals (walk/run) but was going to do 30 second intervals instead. So, I took his advice and it was great. I improved my HM time from the Princess to the DL by 25 minutes even with having IT band pain and having to take it a bit easier towards the end. The important thing at Disney is to have fun. I think too many treat the races like they were at the Boston Half or New York Half and don't enjoy it as much as they should. Sure, people beat records, but they don't notice all the fun stuff or speak to all the fun people. BTW, Jeff Galloway likes to be in the back corrals because he likes it better. The atmosphere is different, the people are a bit more fun and not nearly as serious. No matter how much my time improves, I am never going to declare it to get to move up to the top corrals.

I like being with the fun people. :cool1:

Me too!

I did Galloway training 10 years ago when I did the ATL 1/2 Marathon. I stopped running after I completed my 2nd 1/2 later that year. Now, I am loving the time I am out alone which I didn't nec do 10 years ago. I guess I am older and wiser as I have realized I will never be very fast or win a race, but for me just starting it and finishing is winning. I also want to have fun doing it.

I think I will get the HH book this weekend.

Julie, I will never ever be a speed emon and I am quite okay with that. Running has given me so much more than that as my self esteem has sky rocketed. THAT is priceless!

I just met Jeff Galloway today. He came to speak at the company I work for on behalf of the Kaiser Permanente Run/Walk event next Thursday that I am now going to run/walk. Luckily, it is a 5K which is suddenly sounding like a piece of cake! ;) He was the one that pointed out my wall problem. It makes sense. I guess I will just have to push myself more. I thought about joining one of the groups but I really like training by myself now that I have the right amount of motivation. But, I may do some of the fun runs after work with one of the groups from his stores here in Atlanta. He is a really nice guy and his store employees are so helpful.

It was kind of funny to hear some of my colleagues give all their excuses for not running to him and all their running problems, injuries, etc. It was funny because a little over a year ago...that was me!! Oh, the lessons I have learned since then. For the record, I still don't like running but I sure love those Disney medals!! :rotfl: Until Disney starts designing ugly ones, I will keep running races! The great workout, better feeling and sense of accomplishment are all just nice side effects.

If you are stopping to look at cute dogs YES. My dog LOVES me after I run...all the salty sweat I guess. :)

Maybe that's my mistake. I forgot to have my dogs give me a good cleaning after my run.

Nutrition Question! Tomorrow is my 6 mile run, I am going to estimate it will take me 60 min. Should I take one of my gels at 30 min? Or am I still not out there long enough to be taking any of the gels yet?

When I'm going to be out for 90 minutes or more, I take a gel at 50 min. But it's such an individual thing. For a 6 mile run, you probably don't need anything other than a few ounces of water, but it's so individual. 6 miles isn't too short to start experimenting, I think.

I am so pumped about how well my C25k is going.....I did 25 min straight this morning with my fastest pace yet...not that its about pace, but happy I am just doing the program.

I was diagnosed with Plantar Faciitis in April, its been alot better but my heel bothers me the nights after my 3 runs a week. I am trying to be extra good about doing my stretches after I run and also during the day...I am just a little worried as I start to get stronger and add mileage it will get worse. It does NOT bother me at all during the runs so far. Any one been through this?

I am going to be very conservative when I start training for the princess.....I am so excited about doing it, hoping my injury will stay away. I have a running coach who also is dealing with this and if it starts to hurt bad again, i will go back to my doctor.

Anyway, just excited about my run today and looking forward to 28 minutes on Sunday! Who would have thought I would be doing this 8 weeks ago.:thumbsup2

This is a very individual question, there are alot of factors that come into play with this question.

For me personally anything over 4 I take GU or a chomp before I run - it just gives me the extra "pep" since I am up early in the am and bed after 11pm everynight.

If I am doing anything over 4 - like my 6 I did last week I will take a GU 45 minutes into it.

Personally, I hate the tired OMG feeling --- I dont like that feeling when my body is screaming and it wants to be done already.

Bottom line do what your body asks, if you dont feel like doing it then dont. For me - I do because it helps --- could be mental but I want to run my runs not fall asleep doing them or fight sleep either.

Do what works best for you ............ its your body and your adventure running -- if you want to then do it if not that is fine too :)

The thing to keep in mind is that a gel is simply to replenish the electrolytes that you lose while running. They won't give you a pick-up unless you take the ones with caffeine. I personally would stay as close to what Disney or another race does with respect to when they hand out gels. At Disney, it isn't until you get to mile 9. So, personally I would just make sure that I have a great sports drink diluted with water or the Gu Brew and take it with.

It is a huge misconception that gels actually keep you going. They just help replenish what you have lost and prevent things like charley horses, cramping, and other electrolyte deficiency side effects. It took me a while to realize that...I had expected that I would have an energy burst and turn into the roadrunner. So disappointing.

I really think I am going to carry Red Vines when I need a pick me up. A great group of fellow DISers handed them out at Mile 10 with Pretzels and that was so much better than any gel! More delicious too! ;)

I really saw the benefits of mirroring the Disney race strategy in my training last Sunday. Only drinking water and/or Gu Brew only happened at the same distance that Disney had the stations. It helped me train my mind and body to expect hydration and gel at the right point. Now, I just know that I need to run some extra distance for my last long race so that I don't hit the wall at mile 10.

Good Luck with your run! :)

That is so awesome and you have already figured out that the key to this is to be very careful and conservative with runnng and letting your body adapt to the rigors of running. I have had two seperate sets of PT visits with 2 differing problems so i know the drill. I will be running a 12 mile long run Sunday in prearation for my first HM in two weeks.

You can do this and you ARE!!!!! Congratulations!!

Can someone point me to the post about corral placement? I would like to know what corral I will be in based on my projected finish time - I remember seeing it buried in this thread somewhere.

6 miles completed this morning...YAY! Half way there baby :lovestruc I decided to take it super easy, 6 miles is alot. I wasn't going to worry about speed and time, the goal today was simply to finish the 6 miles. Pacing was 2 1/2 minutes slower then normal at 13:20 a mile. Not complaining, just proud of the accomplishment of hitting the halfway mark, minus the fact I kept asking myself, Why am I doing this? What's wrong with me, who in their right mind would want to run 13.1 miles? What am I getting myself into? and my favorite line....Am I almost home yet?.....LOL Hey gotta do something to pass the time by :)

Congrats to you!!! :woohoo: :thumbsup2

I did my first 8 miles this morning. I completed it in 2 hours and am a little disappointed because it took me longer than I had anticipated. :sad2: About 3/4 of the way back I started to have some lower back pain and wasn't feeling to well. I walked the rest of the way back. I plan on taking it easy the rest of the day!

I hope everyone has a great Saturday!! :)

AWESOME!!! You will get faster and you can trust me on this. It wasn't that long ago that my long run pace was 13:28 and now its 12:10 which is a comfortable pace. With time and patience, your speed will increase. You are doing great!

Thansk!! :). I ended up not doing it because I didn't want to miss the run with my running group. I was afraid I would fall behind. I'm hoping a day of rest will seeped up the process! Thanks!

Enjoy your Saturday! It's gorgeous outside! :)

There is no way of knowing...it is a guess as to how Disney officially places people. Generally, you don't get placed in the higher corrals until you have a 2:45 verified half time. Regardless, you won't know what corral you are officially placed in until you get to the Expo. It doesn't matter what corral you get placed in unless you are an Elite Runner. Those runners finish half marathons in less than 1:30.
