6 miles completed this morning...YAY! Half way there baby :lovestruc I decided to take it super easy, 6 miles is alot. I wasn't going to worry about speed and time, the goal today was simply to finish the 6 miles. Pacing was 2 1/2 minutes slower then normal at 13:20 a mile. Not complaining, just proud of the accomplishment of hitting the halfway mark, minus the fact I kept asking myself, Why am I doing this? What's wrong with me, who in their right mind would want to run 13.1 miles? What am I getting myself into? and my favorite line....Am I almost home yet?.....LOL Hey gotta do something to pass the time by :)

Great job. The furthest I've gone is 6.2 miles - TODAY :cool1: I ran in my first 10K. It felt great to know I'm just about half-way there. I felt pretty strong. Next week my running partner and I are going for 7. I'm kind of stunned that I've come so far since April.

Congrats to you!!! :woohoo: :thumbsup2

I did my first 8 miles this morning. I completed it in 2 hours and am a little disappointed because it took me longer than I had anticipated. :sad2: About 3/4 of the way back I started to have some lower back pain and wasn't feeling to well. I walked the rest of the way back. I plan on taking it easy the rest of the day!

I hope everyone has a great Saturday!! :)

8 miles is awesome. I hope the back pain is just a fluk and you'll be back on track. I'm starting to feel twinges in my knees now that I've added on mileage. It would be tough to loose momentum now that I feel we're making such great gains.

MY FIRST 5K IS TOMORROW!!!

woohooo!!! i'm FREAKING out! i ran 4.5 on thursday then yesterday (friday) dh, ds, and i drove to York, PA to see my grandpa. we went to the fair there and ate so much food you'd barf if i listed it all. then today we ate some more before driving back home. i didn't run friday or saturday and now i have to run 3.1 miles in the am.

i hope it's ok that i didn't run. it's just two days off, not like a month. i'm going to hit the sack early because i'm the one who drove 4 hours yesterday and then 4 more today and i'm exhausted!!

Good luck on your first 5K in the morning! Two days off before a race is totally fine - your legs will be rested and ready to rock. Have fun!

I had to take FOUR days off this week because of knee issues, and I ended up running a 4 mile race this morning just fine. Whew. Central Park rocks.

Tomorrow should be super. The first mile is up Central Park West, which is FLAT, as compared to West Drive in Central Park, which is hilly.

Yep. I'm planning to be at the start about 8AM to warm up and watch the opening ceremonies. Maybe 7:45 ish. Just buzz my cell when you get there and I'll come find you. Can't wait.

I have my longest run yet tomorrow morning EARLY and when all is said and done I will be able to say I ran 12 miles. My first HM is 2 weeks from tomorrow and after 14 weeks of training with 2 left, I am getting ready for this to be over so I can take a break. BUT in 2 weeks I will earn my first finisher's medal. THAT will be special!

Laurie, I'm a week ahead of you, but I SO agree with this. After Philly RnR and Wine & Dine, I am taking a well deserved rest. Hopefully I can get back to the gym and get some personal training before I start my Princess training.

I am getting so excited for you. Yes, in 2 weeks, you will have your finisher's medal.:woohoo:

I was going to run 11 today, but it was so windy. I ran 10 miles in the wind last Saturday, and I said I won't do that again. So, tomorrow it is.

You are running early, you eat before you run don't you? I rarely run in the morning, but I'd like to get it done right away in the morning if possible.

Way to go Laurie!

And you NY ladies...have a great run tomorrow! Can't wait to hear how it goes.

Higdon Novice or Advanced. I find that the intermediate plans would be better if you were planning on doing the Goofy. But too advanced for most running their first or even second half marathon. Jeff Galloway spoke during the DL Expo and talked about how he used to do one minute intervals (walk/run) but was going to do 30 second intervals instead. So, I took his advice and it was great. I improved my HM time from the Princess to the DL by 25 minutes even with having IT band pain and having to take it a bit easier towards the end. The important thing at Disney is to have fun. I think too many treat the races like they were at the Boston Half or New York Half and don't enjoy it as much as they should. Sure, people beat records, but they don't notice all the fun stuff or speak to all the fun people. BTW, Jeff Galloway likes to be in the back corrals because he likes it better. The atmosphere is different, the people are a bit more fun and not nearly as serious. No matter how much my time improves, I am never going to declare it to get to move up to the top corrals.

I like being with the fun people. :cool1:

I have a couple of questions about your experience with the walk/run intervals. First, how fast is the run portion? Do you strive for a very fast run during the run portion and a very fast walk for the walk portion?

I keep going back and forth with the running styles. I find that I am more comfortable running longer stretches (albeit slow) and then walking breaks every mile approximately - or sooner if I need one. However, I find that when I get to my higher mileages (8+) I start to get fatigued and wonder how I will complete the entire half marathon. So, I keep revisiting the walk/run intervals, thinking that might help me go the entire length of the half - or at least use that strategy for the last 4 or 5 miles. Yet, I feel that the frequent starting and stopping - well, I just can't get into a rhythm very well, it feels choppy. How do you manage the starting and stopping, especially every 30 seconds?

Thanks! princess:

Oh no, that's too bad! I hope it's nothing serious. Enjoy your run, I can't wait to hear how it goes.

I need to get out for my long run.....

Good Luck Nancy! You'll do great, and I am sure you'll have fun at your first 5k like I did last weekend.

First let me put my Galloway hat on and say that if you are not planning on running straight through you need to start the run in a run/walk mode. Physiologically, if you push out on a run until you must walk, getting back into a run can be extremely difficult. It’s better to program the walks in up front.

Next, a walk break at every mile point is perfectly acceptable, though Jeff would not necessarily agree with this. If you are currently running 8 straight I would not fall back to anything less than a 5:1. As far as speed, you want your runs to be conversational. That is you should be able to talk and hold a conversation while running. This is a point that is about 80% of your anaerobic threshold; a great exertion point for burning fat as fuel. Walking should be a quick pace; speed depends on your natural walking gate. One thing I would coach you to not do on a walk is to walk with poor form. It should mimic a good running form; head up, shoulders back and a good arm swing.

You do know that a jog break works the same as a walk break. If you are running at 12 minutes and pull back to 15 minutes for a minute… it’s the same thing. OK similar thing. You are recruiting legs and aerobic demands differently for the small break.
