Here's a motivator: (I cut this out of a magazine)

"Harriette Thompson, an 87 year-old grandmother of 10, will run here 12th consecutive San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon in June [2010]. She has placed first or second in her age division in all 11 races-her PR is 6:07. The concert pianist also takes yoga, water aerobics, and art classes."

Can't remember where I cut this out, but it's good stuff.

That is cool! I'm doing the 5K alone, no family with me and actually I am dedicating this to my DS who will turn 34 on 2/28/11, he is the son that did the rowing with me. He inspires me to be the best I can be.

Kori, congratulations on the weight loss. I have lost 12lbs since July and it is slow but steadily coming off. I have set my goal to lose 5lbs more by January 7th. I did lose over TG so, I am hopefully going to continue that streak.

To all keep it going.

Cindy

I run with a women's running group a couple of days a week. We had 2 members pregnant that kept running. Both were told by their Doc's to either stop or cut back drastically once they had entered their 3rd trimester, but up until then they could go as normal.
They just had to watch for ankle swelling, so were told to take it easy after long runs and SIT, SIT, SIT for the rest of the day after any run in the double digits. With all that being said, both women were already established runners, so they weren't beginners at any of it and had competed in prior half-marathons. They both completed the half we were training for, one was 20 weeks in and the other was around 21-22 weeks.
They did take numerous potty breaks!:)

That's amazing!!!! Wow! Those women are powerhouses!!!

About the potty breaks, I was thinking about how much my bladder bounces around while I am jogging, and wondered how could a pregnant woman run with a baby on top of her bladder!
Sometimes, mine gets irritated. I started taking cranberry supplements and I haven't had a problem since.

You are an inspiration! So many races and children too! I think it's amazing!
I thought it was fun hearing my name announced at the finish too!

The story of the senior citizen woman running the San Diego Rock & Roll is cool too!

Hi!

I'm new to this thread but not the the boards - just registered last night for the half! I did it last year (fast walking) with 9 other amazing ladies I met on the WISH threads! In fact, I bet some of them are on here, too!

I thought I wasn't doing it this year, so needless to say, I'm starting training today! And hoping the orthopedic will clear me as I had a knee injury last year.

I found this today: A Kapa***

I began running seriously after I got in a motorcycle accident in 2001. I was laid up for quite some time, and my girlfriend at the time decided to leave me for a guy who she could "do things" with... one of these included running. What started as a mode of spite evolved into a meditation therapy after the break-up. After dating a marathon trainer and not understanding her insanity, I showed up to her race just to see her body fail (at mile 25.5) and watch her leave in an ambulance. I vowed to take on the race in her honor the following year (2005), which I finished in a painful fashion. I have been a runner ever since, and have been slowly working on my personal best times.
I just finished my 5th marathon (Walt Disney in 2010), and I think I'm officially hooked. Someone help me-- running is controlling my life.
PR'd again for my 5th marathon -- 3:33!

This is from someone else. She ran the Disney 1/2 and seems to run a lot of races. She also wrote that with all of the picture taking at the Princess, she was doing 12 minute miles instead of her usual 7 minute miles!

"Some think guts is sprinting at the end of a race. But guts is what got you there to begin with.
Guts start back in the hills with 6 miles to go and you're thinking of how you can get out of this race without anyone noticing. Guts begin when you still have forty minutes of torture left and you're already hurting more than you ever remember."
- George Sheehan
"Top results are reached only through pain. But eventually you like this pain. You'll find the more difficulties you have on the way, the more you will enjoy your success."
- Juha Väätäinen

Love this quote...thanks for posting all the encouraging stories & quotes!!
Rough week physically for me, only got 1 run in and one boot camp class. Hard to imagine getting through 8 tomorrow. I purchased compression tights this week though, hoping that will help with my muscle fatigue.

Hope everyone had a great week and all the long runs this wekend go well. Anyone racing in Jingle Bell races or Jolly Jaunts this weekend??? If so, enjoy the fun of it as well as the running! I think that's my most favorite part of running at Disney (and maybe the only reason I do it)...the pure FUN of the journey.

Sending some pixie dust to all of you :goodvibes

I am doing a Jingle Bell Run tomorrow morning!! My group of fellow women runners & walkers have a team for the race tomorrow. We are 68 women strong!!!! That's a lot of estrogen! Here's hoping we win the team award and the best costume award (felt elf skirts). Good Luck to everyone else running races this weekend!!!

Today was not the best training day for me. Felt really good on the way to the park to do my walk/interval session. First thing happens is iPod has dead battery, can't use m program that I am so anxious to try out. Ok, so I will try to use my Droid, will download app there, no luck with that. So, I downloaded the runtastic free app. no music but ... will try to play Pandora, that kept failing. Time is going and I haven't done anything yet. So, I gave up did 4 laps which isn't but 1 mile and that took me wayyyy tooo looong. I have to have either the music or the trainer talking to me and helping me set my pace.:rolleyes1

I finally turned on the runtastic just to see if that would give me a better idea and I could set a pace. Did 2.5k in 26 min according to the Runtastic app. bummer, I would be swept at that pace. Have got to do better next time.

I will remember to charge the battery, that is for sure.:rolleyes1

Hope the rest of my day gets better, going out to do some Christmas shopping.

Hopefully some retail therapy...and the joy of picking out gifts for others will help you feel a little better. I've had that kind of a run before...bummer.

It is now Saturday night and I have run 0 times this week...I started swimming with a team again this week, so on Tuesday I was too sore, and on Thursday I swam becuase I was too sore on Wendsday to swim; and then I was out late last night so I napped after work instead of running....:sad2:
So the plan is to run tomorrow after work, I may have to bring my running clothes and change before I go home so I don't have to even enter the apartment. We'll see...

I've decided where I want to stay for the 1/2 and am going to call on Monday! This is starting to feel more real!

Finally I am healed enough from the stress fracture that happened end of Aug/early Sept.

I am going to start tomorrow as all my weeks start then :)

Does anyone know the exact race "full number" the site says only 70% but I think it could be more.

Any news?

Swim-mom, I am halfway through my stress fracture healing process (according to my doc, it should take 6 weeks). How did they treat yours? How long did it take to really heal?

Swim-mom, I am halfway through my stress fracture healing process (according to my doc, it should take 6 weeks). How did they treat yours? How long did it take to really heal?

Sadly, for a full heal it does take alot longer. Here is my timeline:

End of Aug/Sept - the pain in my left shin was horrible, to run I could have just ripped my leg off. Keep in mind I had spine surgery and have a plate + 6 screws and two peices of cadaver bone and the pain was minimal.

From the second wk of Sept to Oct 2 - I did nothing!! and my shin was sore.

Oct 3 - I decided to wear my compression sleeves and run the Diva Half, as I already paid and friends from Boston were meeting me and of course my BFF too :) Took 800 of motrin and ran the first 7 miles and then I walked/ran the rest in pain.

Oct 3 - I drank so much water during the half to help with the cramps in my leg I prayed for the cops to pull me over because I wanted to just go to the hospital.

Oct 15th - husband finally convienced me to get xrays - I knew it was gonna be a stress fracture so I was in NO rush! So YES it was confirmed I had a stress facture bad enough to see in the x-rays

Nov 10th - still not any better after NO RUNNING since 10/3 and before that the end of Aug/early Sept. Had x-rays again, and the fracture was not healing that well and I could DO NOTHING!!! Was advised if no healing took place in a month - a bone stimulator was going to be needed if not surgery cause my body was not laying down bone to heal properly.

Dec 3rd - went back to the dr and had more x-rays! FINALLY, my shin has healed enough to start slowly back to running. I have to start out slow at realize a PR for the Princess is not gonna happen.

**Was told to increase calcium and to add a protein shake with milk daily for muscle strength** Also have PT for 4 weeks to work on mechanics :)

There it is in a nut shell..........I start back today :)

WIsh me luck ------------ oh and found money to finally register :) I have my room booked!

Wow! Thanks SOOO much for the detail! Good luck and keep us posted! :goodvibes

My timeline is as follows:

Aug 1 - During the Chicago RnR half, searing pain in left shin at mile 7 required walking the rest, in pain but not nearly as bad as you describe.

Took all of Aug off exercising

Sept - ran sparingly, but likely too much distance when running (~10 miles a pop) Shin hurt but not awful.

Oct - started training again, shin hurt off and on. Taped, compression sleeves, and it was only okay, dull roar of a pain.

Nov 14th - did OBX half knowing that I shouldn't. Miles 10-13 hurt quite badly. Pain after the race was there but not awful... definitely knew something was wrong, though. Limped through the next few days.

Nov 17th - went to sports med doc. She xrayed and could see bone remodeling (likely from Aug injury), and based on symptoms and xray diagnosed stress fracture. She put me in an air cast that I am to wear at all times but showering, sleeping, or swimming until Dec 28th, and a walking boot that I am to wear if I have to walk more than desk to bathroom (I travel occasionally).

I am also to take calcium, and ice massage daily for 10-15 minutes at night.

I have completely rested it except daily activity. Starting this week, I am going to add swiming or pool running, and next weekend I can go back to ice hockey (which surprisingly enough is a no-impact exercise on the lower leg).

She was hopeful that I will be able to do the Princess, and is going to give me a rehab/training plan and some custom orthotics when I go back. Her feeling is that my extreme overpronation is at fault (my feet are so flat I would practically leave a complete footprint!).
